I’ve just left a Snags tights group of Facebook as someone suggested HP themed tights and the first comment was about how JKR was “up to her antics” today and had “ruined the legacy” or some such absolute nonsense. When sticking up for women is described as “antics”, I’m out.

Rhannion · 13/12/2021 22:37

Snags has been featuring men in tights ( and I don’t mean Robin Hood) for the last couple of months. They won’t get any more money from me again.

I’ve no issue with men in tights at all, they’re not a gendered item for me (though there are definitely some attention seeking posts in the group by men) and it wasn’t snag employees or representatives slagging JKR off. I’m a big fan of their inclusive advertising. It’s just the unthinking responses to any mention of her that pisses me off especially in a space that’s meant to be good natured and supportive and predominately for women.

I’m a big fan of their inclusive advertising and breaking down those “this item is for men and this is for women” barriers is fine by me - they use plenty of gender non-conforming women in their advertising too. It’s just the unthinking responses to any mention of her that pisses me off especially in a space that’s meant to be good natured and supportive and predominately for women.

littlbrowndog · 14/12/2021 00:01

Saw this on Twitter.

What is the difference between a man who rapes a woman and a man who rapes a woman whilst calling himself Susan

Cmon police Scotland answer this one ?

GrimDamnFanjo · 14/12/2021 00:33

@NotBadConsidering

I’ve just looked at the tweet for the first time. I shouldn’t be surprised, but the amount of people who either don’t understand her tweet, or think rapists deserve respect, and don’t see the issue with where this sort of thing goes in terms of prisons is huge. It’s pretty disgusting really.
Agreed. I found it utterly depressing. God knows how JK manages to keep on. Every time she speaks out the backlash is obscene.

Bloody brilliant. Thanks for posting this. There are many many people I could forward this to. Perhaps I will - their Xmas present: wake up and smell the coffee.

Great piece. Sets it out clearly for people who haven’t been following.

Waitwhat23 · 14/12/2021 07:01

@MiladyBerserko that's an amazing thread. Really clear and concise. I thought this answer to someone trying to frame this all as JKR's fault for bringing it up was just brilliant -

'She's not linking trans identity to heinous crimes -- she's questioning an obviously mad policy: gender self-id, where any male can self-id as trans on his own say-so for any reason and be placed in female-only spaces.

If you think this is a reasonable policy (in any domain) and one that should be extended to convicted rapists, defend it.'

No answer, of course.

BraveBananaBadge · 14/12/2021 07:31

Alex Massie is very good. Hope he sent a link of that to Seth Abramson, who yesterday was interpreting him as a t* who wanted all trans people dead, if I recall.

highame · 14/12/2021 07:49

The Times of London has been running an aspect of the debate nearly every day for a while now. They know where there readership is and they know where the fault lines are. They do try impartiality but it does highlight the many absurdities in the trans rights argument.

Good thread

There is also this about a poll in Scotland comissioned by MurrayBlackburnMackenzie:

Grumpyosaurus · 14/12/2021 08:47

JKR is spot on about how Orwellian it all is.

Rape in Scotland by definition requires the rapist to have a penis' - to be a biological man.

But no, if he says so, he's a woman.

If we carry on stripping language of its meaning like this, how the hell will we ever communicate?

Cailin66 · 14/12/2021 08:55

@MargaritaPie

"Well we’re not allowed to say ‘man’ when they identify as a woman, are we"

Is it really too much for JK Rowling and others to use the term transwomen? Even if she has differing views, just out of respect and to be polite?

You think raped women should have to refer to their rapist as a transwoman in order to be respectful to the rapist Shock
loislovesstewie · 14/12/2021 09:04

I think we are likely to reach a point where two people are having a conversation and neither knows what the other is saying. 'Are we talking about 2 males, 1 male 1 female, 1 trans, 2 trans ?' If we stuck to biology, how much simpler! But no, we can't because a tiny number of people want everything their way.
It's both depressing and ludicrous.

Seth Abramson blocked him mobile.twitter.com/alexmassie/status/1470503976542027778 Hmm

He also doesn't seem to have replied to Roddy Dunlop QC (Dean of the Faculty of Advocates!)

Eliza Mondegreen nails it in the tweet upthread:

“No worthy cause asks you to close your eyes and let someone else tell you what you see.”

Scraggythang · 14/12/2021 13:24

Discussion about this on bbc politics live just now. No one would dare say Scottish police were in the wrong, totally tried to change the point and obvs the ‘most marginalised’ statement got trotted out. And then, rather predictably it was a topic planted at the end of the show and they run out of time.

Depressing.

Anyone seen this clown?

Reminds me of the good old days when wankers would dismiss women talking together as "Mothers' Union"

Be proud of The Mumsnet Set

Yeah women, all those women, mothers so they should no better, all gossiping together like a bunch of fishwife harpies, they should just get back to the kitchen with their rolling pins and accept they’re dried up old prunes and should shut up for the men to talk. 🤣
