Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

And just like that - females squeamish at male public masturbation

Has anyone watched the new Sex and the City show yet? I got really annoyed and switched off. Carrie is on a podcast, lots of chat about cis het. Whatevs.

But what really made me furious was when the male podcast guest said he couldn’t think of anywhere where he hadn’t masturbated in public. And Carrie said she hadn’t and they laughed at her like she was such a prude. I suppose it was trying to show how behind the times she is. I suppose she didn’t want to “kink shame” .

When did it become ok for men to masturbate in public?

Yes I know it’s a shit show BTW.

OP posts:

I'm not watching because Samantha, but my patience had worn thin long before the original had ended.
That sounds disgusting though, I've never wanked in any public place, who would? 🤢 And then they wonder why we don't want men in female spaces.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 11/12/2021 15:37

I switched off at the first seminar scene “Woah. A bit quick the pronouns there!”

I could see where we were heading. It sounds like I was right!

I suppose SATC always showcased the most privileged of women who can coast through life “being kind” and decimating the boundaries of other women by implying they’re “prudish”.

Deliriumoftheendless · 11/12/2021 15:41

I have a number of issues with SATC (but I love the clothes)

JoodyBlue · 11/12/2021 15:48

Ah so interesting. I bore with. The story line at present is that both Miranda and Carrie have come directly acropper with woke. Carrie has been spoken to about "upping her pussy" by the Sara Ramirez character. I also suspect that Charlotte will be confronting pre-teen issues. I will be very interested in how this develops. Not expecting it to be GC, but the first episode did not fully embrace wokeism either. Also worth watching for final scenes, which made me realise how old I'd got. If you haven't watched it and you were a fan of the old days, then do....... won't give spoilers.

DoucheCanoe · 11/12/2021 15:54

I've never seen SATC and this has made sure I won't be watching it now.

So sick of the small little messages appearing in everyday media to belittle anyone who isn't a self declared "ally" or "woke" enough to just go along without thought of what it means for society.

Holothane · 11/12/2021 15:56

Never watched the first time around just not interested.

NandorTheRelentless · 11/12/2021 16:07

Really? You never watched it, and now you're not watching the new one... Do you often discuss shows you haven't watched? For me, I dont discuss Emerdale as I have never watched it

I watched the original series, and it was witty and funny, and intelligent, and talked about important issues

The new series doesn't yet know where it is going and is trying way too hard. They should have sorted out the stuff with Samantha, as she was integral to the show - and would have been great to see her in the next decade of age still out there doing stuff. Also - the hair thing with Miranda, she looked amazing and Charlotte completely wrong.

They all looked so beige though

SpindlesAdventWhirl · 11/12/2021 16:12

I watched some of the original, enough to love Samantha a bit anyway.

DoucheCanoe · 11/12/2021 16:16

@NandorTheRelentless yes really.

If SATC was referenced in the title I wouldn't have opened the thread, the title and subject matter are part of a wider discussion that needs to be had.

This is the feminist chat section, not TV addicts!

334bu · 11/12/2021 16:17

I think the point of the post is less to do with the quality of the newly rebooted Sex in the City and more to do with it being acceptable to express in a popular television show that public masturbation is totally normal and fine and that everybody does it.

No need nowadays to have a dirty old mac to open when you want to flash your dick in public.

princessleah1 · 11/12/2021 16:20

Masturbating in public is creepy af and should be reported to the police.

DoucheCanoe · 11/12/2021 16:25

Agreed @334bu it's concerning that this kind of shit is being normalised now without people even realising it.

I had a grown man masturbate Infront of me twice (once when I was 7 and again as an adult) in public places. Its a power play to intimidate and stun women.

TheWeeDonkey · 11/12/2021 16:25

I liked the original series but it feels like they're flogging a dead horse now and it feels a bit pointless withut Samantha anyway. Kim Catrall was my favourite.

As for the masturbating in public, why would anyone admit to that? Grim

Glentheredbeakbattleostrich · 11/12/2021 16:33

I actually agree OP, the many references to pushing Carrie's boundaries and taking her out of her comfort zone (with a sexual undertone) were at best uncomfortable. If the character had been male there would have been uproar but because it was a mexican/irish, non binary person (their label, one of many employed) it was all fine.

The 'wokeness' was embarrassing, the constant need to label everyone pissed me off and I hope it is building to some kind of message although what I dont know.

Kotatsu · 11/12/2021 16:36

There seems to be a new thing coming out from the gender lot - that we're 'confused' by them - the podcast host brought it up - as if she was any more gender-non-conforming than the bloke she happily described as a 'cis male'..

IT was all bizarre. I'm not in the slightest bit confused by someone's hair cut and dress-sense (OK, that's not entirely true, I've seen some shockers! - but that's at their idea of what looks good, not at them-themselves.)

NandorTheRelentless · 11/12/2021 16:40

[quote DoucheCanoe]@NandorTheRelentless yes really.

Fair enough - point taken.

I watched it, and the scene was definitely a 'shock jock' type of show, not a 'main stream every one is doing it' kind of scene.
They were trying to be outrageous and 'out there'

The worst bit for me, was Miranda going from an amazing cut throat lawyer being unable to articulate why she thought the lecturer was a student because she had (beautiful) braids and not short hair like she did in the faculty photo

teezletangler · 11/12/2021 16:41

Indeed. Said while wearing an absolute face full of makeup too Confused so gender non-conforming...

I balked at Che's suggestion that Carrie will get labelled as "the boring vanilla cis het married lady" or words to that effect. Gosh, what a terrible thing to be! There did seem to be a bit of pushback from Carrie and Miranda on this, but it's hard to tell if there is any criticism of the new woke "sex positivity" or if they are just going to be shown to be out of touch old women. So far I'm not impressed. It all feels a bit sexist and ageist, actually.

Rose is of course going to come out as NB/trans at some point.

Kotatsu · 11/12/2021 17:02

Rose is of course going to come out as NB/trans at some point.

They could shock us all, and it turns out to actually be a massive fake out - that they'll actually treat the issues with some thought and nuance rather than 'girl, doesn't like dresses, likes skating and her dad, must be boy', and have her rant that she's a girl/woman, who happens to like these things and it's all fine.

Have Carrie go "actually, no, I don't want to talk about masterbating, I don't think it's normal to masterbate in public, and I don't want it to be normal. I'm off", Miranda stop apologising and remember that she's been around the block a bit, and that she can tell her 17 year old off/to stop having sex with his girlfriend under her roof if she wants, and for Charlotte to just carry on being Charlotte, and have everyone roll their eyes and gently pat her hand at her straight-laced, ultra-feminine self, who they appreciate for that too.

I'm going to watch episode 3 before I make the call about watching any more I think.

NandorTheRelentless · 11/12/2021 17:19

Have Carrie go "actually, no, I don't want to talk about masterbating, I don't think it's normal to masterbate in public, and I don't want it to be normal. I'm off", not sure she would on that type of show

Miranda stop apologising and remember that she's been around the block a bit, and that she can tell her 17 year old off/to stop having sex with his girlfriend under her roof if she wants, for fucks sake YES!!!

teezletangler · 11/12/2021 17:20

Here is hoping, Kotatsu! That would be very refreshing.

The Brady sex thing is just bizarre. I don't think there are any households where this would be normal behaviour.

Franca123 · 11/12/2021 17:35

I thought the same thing. So now mainstream TV is telling us we're prudes if we object to masturbating in public? So gross. I'm not taking it too seriously as it was generally shit. It had no idea what it was doing or who it was doing it for.

thirstyformore · 11/12/2021 17:47

I'm pretty sure masturbating in public is a criminal offence. At least in the UK. Not watched the show (tbh I wasn't a huge fan of SATC anyway) but sounds like it's not grasping it's target audience very well!

middleager · 11/12/2021 17:58

This article describes some of the issues mentioned around wokeness and women aged 50+ being treated like out of touch dinosaurs. The author is 37, but also finds the show's desperate attempts to be hip, insulting and alienating to the core audience.

@NandorTheRelentless
I watched the original series, and it was witty and funny, and intelligent, and talked about important issues

genuine question:
What were the important issues?

I was pretty young when I watched and haven’t seen that many episode and all I can remember is fashion, shoes, hair and sex.
So very shallow show what I remember.

Yeswhatno · 11/12/2021 18:06

And going on and on and on about men……
