And just like that - females squeamish at male public masturbation

Has anyone watched the new Sex and the City show yet? I got really annoyed and switched off. Carrie is on a podcast, lots of chat about cis het. Whatevs.

But what really made me furious was when the male podcast guest said he couldn’t think of anywhere where he hadn’t masturbated in public. And Carrie said she hadn’t and they laughed at her like she was such a prude. I suppose it was trying to show how behind the times she is. I suppose she didn’t want to “kink shame” .

When did it become ok for men to masturbate in public?

Yes I know it’s a shit show BTW.

I wish I had been wrong.😞
I may still watch for Anthony who will be my new favourite character. At least until his reeducation.

Wanderingowl · 16/12/2021 16:46

I wouldn't have minded seeing the Miranda discovers she's bisexual later in life story. Because that isn't massively uncommon. But y'know, only if she'd actually found herself attracted to a woman who acknowledged herself as a woman!

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 16/12/2021 16:50

I find it odd they didn't explore that in the original satc. The only lesbian storyline I remember was Samantha and the artist, which mostly focused on female orgasm. Fine, but it lacked the depth that a Miranda storyline would have had, seeing as she tended to have longer term partners and her chief dynamic was balancing love, ambition and work. I think there was a lot of scope for finding a deep connection in a lesbian relationship that supported her success.

Wanderingowl · 16/12/2021 17:02

The original series also had the story where Charlotte sort of pretended to be a lesbian so she could hang out with some lesbians.

I can see why the series wasn't ready at the turn of the century, to tackle a proper emotional romantic/sexual between one of the main cast and a woman. Did the series end before shows like The L Word? But I would have liked to have seen it done properly now. However it seems we missed our window between a proper relationship between too women being too risque then and two passe now. Seems like 2008 to 2015 was all we got!

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 16/12/2021 17:09

There were lesbian kisses in series in the 90s but Willow and Tara were the first serious couple I believe. That was possibliy into the late noughties though, so satc was still going probably.

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 16/12/2021 17:10

From Buffy the vampire slayer

Wanderingowl · 16/12/2021 17:20

Yeah. Willow and Tara were a few years before SatC ended as Buffy ended before SatC. But I think particularly for a show specifically about sex, it was too big a leap for an established show. Willow and Tara's sex life was implied, even compared to the other sexual pairings on Buffy. The most explicit they ever got was in the musical episode with "you make me complete, you make me com............." As Tara goes down and Willow levitates. Which was extremely wink, wink, nod, nod.

Before The L Word, women having sex with women as an explicit plot point in a show about women having sex in and out of relationships didn't happen. And when it did happen, it had to be on a show specifically about that rather than a risk on an established show. Gay men had gained coolness. And mainly straight women kissing for male gaze and edginess was popular. But women getting everything they needed from each other was not really something we got to see much of.

ginnig · 16/12/2021 17:24

I thought they were trying to show how the ladies now felt out of touch but also there was a bit of side eye if that makes sense eg the dj was hitting the woke button to caveat everything that could possibly be offfensive.

ginnig · 16/12/2021 17:25

I enjoyed both episodes

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 16/12/2021 17:26

Yes, the misogyny of it is rather obvious when you consider male homosexual relationships were in the mainstream in their own right much before women's.

ginnig · 16/12/2021 17:30

@WorriedMumsDontSleep I read that article but if the show didn't have nods to these issues it would be branded tone deaf, out of touch etc. They can't win.

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 16/12/2021 17:36

I wouldn't expect an evenhanded treatment.
I expect it will pan out like an extended version of Butterfly, with added designer shoes.

frogswimming · 16/12/2021 18:03

Oh god it's awful. I agree with everything everyone's saying. I said te same in the tv section. I've only seen episode one and I don't know whether to bother watching the rest. It's basically making fun and putting down the target audience with no jokes and is mean spirited.

DuckDuckNo · 16/12/2021 18:29

From the article:

And Just Like That is more than merely bad. It appears to have been made by someone who hates Sex and the City, everyone who ever watched it and all women over the age of 40. This is very strange, because the people who made And Just Like That are in large part the people who made Sex and the City

It is not very strange. The men who write the series don't care for women who have aged past "hotness". Who was the critic who wrote that SATC was like "gay men playing Barbies"? You don't see 40+ Barbies.

Didn’t she at one point pretend to be a lesbian at work and take someone to a work do as her girlfriend? I can’t remember the ending to that.

Or am I getting mixed up with Charlotte and the Power lesbians?

I miss the old SATC but I enjoyed this weeks episide. Especially Anthony. Until they make him see the light.

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 16/12/2021 19:19

She had a very short lived relationship with a lesbian called Maria. They broke up because Sam didn't want to commit. It was amicable and one of her better relationships.
Yes, I think it was Charlotte who did the power lesbians thing.

Wanderingowl · 16/12/2021 23:25

Didn’t she at one point pretend to be a lesbian at work and take someone to a work do as her girlfriend? I can’t remember the ending to that.

Yeah, you are right. That happened with Miranda, she was assumed to be a lesbian and invited to dinners by her boss who thought she was more interesting as a lesbian.

So Sam had a short lived relationship with a woman. Charlotte hung out with the Power Lesbians. Miranda once let her co workers think she was a lesbian for potential work gains. And Carrie kissed Alanis Morissette in a game of spin the bottle where everyone was bisexual.

And people say the original show lacked diversity!!!!!

Episode 3 was pretty bad. Everything with Sara Ramirez is just awful. Her "comedy" was more like a bad Ted Talk. There were no jokes, no funny stories, no build ups to punch lines. Just a long, long rant about her gender identity, for the sake of a rant about her gender identity. And it was made sure that we once again got to hear that she's a Mexican-Irish-Non-Binary-Bisexual. And then the awful, awful scene with her shotgunning Miranda. Fuuuuuck! Who thought that was a good idea. That was about as sexy as a bout of piles!

Anthony was fabulous though. He was never my favourite character before. But he absolutely is (for) now.

cosmopolitanplease · 17/12/2021 09:47

Ugh. 'Gender In The City' isn't really doing it for me but like a PP I'm hoping Anthony will continue to be the voice of sanity.

FrancescaContini · 17/12/2021 09:52

Never liked it 20 years ago - oh just fuck off with your constant wittering on about shoes and whether he likes you or not - and I definitely won’t waste money on this if they’re using the “c” word.

DaggerIsle · 17/12/2021 10:27

I was coming to say that re Anthony. His advice was wonderfully simple and supportive.
As for Che.... that 'comedy' thing was ridiculous. The whole hysterical vibe for a rather banal coming out story?
And the 3 protagonists looking on with tears in their eyes.... WTF?

CruellaDeVilla · 17/12/2021 10:28

Totally agree @Wanderingowl

WTF indeed, Miranda had evangelical gleaming eyes
middleager · 17/12/2021 10:34

Entirely predictible.

And that scene where the podcast guy (who had previously bragged to audiences in a 'hip' way about wanking in various NYC destinations) joked on the podcast about having sexual relations with a minor... jeez, it's so depressing.

The arrogance of Che that her family would be so obsessed with her sex life and personality choices re self ID. It really is "me, me, me". I don't care! It's boring, it's naval gazing. The family were probaby bored too to be honest.

Brilliant!
RockPaperScience · 17/12/2021 10:46

Having read the précis of episode 3, I’m out.

Absolute load of gender identity pushing rubbish. Wasted opportunity to showcase interesting, complex female characters in their fifties living in NY. The scene where Big died was a rare moment of truth and humanity in a sea of meaningless pronouns and too-cool-for-school gender crap.

I wasn’t expecting Shakespeare, just some escapism in this shitty pandemic. Instead of virtue signalling garbage.
