Thanks, watching it all very closely. I'm hoping this case will be a triumph of fairness over dogma. But it might just reveal how comfortable our institutions are with misogyny and bullying.

I can't really follow the tweets but it seems a lot of AH defence of actions now related to how the others in Twitter exchanges made him feel and how that affected his actions (ie they made him do it). Not sure I'm really getting what's being said though.

Thanks for starting a new thread, and glad he hasn't pulled a sickie!

Personwithrage · 18/11/2021 11:32

What's really difficult about what he's saying in his defence now, about having reflected and having recognised how things look so that it sounds v much like the advice he gave that other doctor, and therefore none of it rings true at all.

It's a hard spot to be in, because of that advice and arrogance, I'm not sure what would you like genuine contrition and insight from him now.

Lots of observers will surely feel the same?

If he doesn't state remorse, reflection and recognise the need to learn then he's toast but if he does talk about reflection and insight he's just quoting his own dismissive play book.

Hard.

Pulling a sickie would suggest that he is aware of how badly it's all going for him. I don't think he does, he is literally Quixotic

nauticant · 18/11/2021 11:35

AH's approach is sensible: it was a robust debate that he was justifiably exercised over, where things went toxic, this was because he'd innocently said something that was interpreted very negatively by the recipient. It's quite easy to mix contrition into this without have to do the full sackcloth and ashes routine.

Terfasaurus · 18/11/2021 11:36

The cross examination is frustrating.

It appears that Dr Harrop was a witness in support of golfer’s legal claim against E.

The doctor posted that anyone who donated to a Crowdfunder would be liable for costs if she lost.

It’s inappropriate and untrue. People would not be liable.

Harrop is also admitting he’s not legally trained but denies that there’s anything wrong with his tweet and the GMC haven’t pulled him up on the inaccuracy of it either.

Awkwardy · 18/11/2021 11:38

^AH: I'm not legally trained and I don't understand the conversation that just transpired in the last few minutes. I'm concerned I may incriminate myself.
Chair: apologies the convo went over your head.^

Hmmmmm.

But surely, 'so I implied I'd come round with some mates and hit her with a golf club' makes that a shit defence? I mean, no-one would expect anyone to do that cold anyway would they? It's only ever going to be as a result of a robust exchange of views minimum. So it's not a great look.

I know you know that, @nauticant, but still. It is 'she was asking for it, and her, and her, and him.'

Lordamighty · 18/11/2021 11:44

No one on that side of the debate (GC) is going to come to my Twitter for honest and well intentioned advice

He actually said that out loud, I mean everybody knows it but he has just admitted it himself.

Personwithrage · 18/11/2021 11:44

I'm confused by the abbreviations today. I think where they're tweeting GMC they mean GP as RD is for the GMC ?

No. Absolutely standard bit of advise given to any witness who is on oath when the tribunal breaks. I do it myself* even if it's a professional witness (an expert on something, who gives evidence before lots of tribunals) as a matter of routine.

*Sometimes I forget. Usually then the legal advisor prompts me.

Helleofabore · 18/11/2021 11:51

Don’t let him out of sight or anywhere near a device!!!

In my mind Do not talk to any more 'journalists'

Alas, too late for that advice

Fariha31 · 18/11/2021 11:56

If he is arguing that hearing others talk in a way he did not agree with pushed him in to behaviour that is unproffessional, well, thats a crap defence.
He is supposed to be a doctor, being unable to controle his emotions to that extent makes him totally unsuitable for a role with the public, espicially one so up close and personal.

FindTheTruth · 18/11/2021 11:59

Abbreviations in the live tweets:

CH - Chair of the hearing

AH - Dr Adrian Harrop

RD - GMC representative Mr Ryan Donoghue

GP - Harrop’s representative Mr Giles Powell.

Yes, tweeter has said privately they've got these people mixed up. It's v hard in the moment on your first day, esp as GP speaks really quietly despite multiple requests to speak up
