So, the Hogwarts turncoats are getting back together, sans Rowling.

They have a brass neck, that's for sure.

Happy to ring every last penny they can out of the franchise whilst continuing to sell Rowling down the river.

Zero moral compass between them. Either they back Rowling, and thank her for the fact anyone other than their mum knows they exist, or they renounce and walk away. You dont get to have it both ways.

I have very little interest in JK Rowling's work, but I fully support her stance on women's rights. Sadly she probably signed away some control over publicity campaigns like this latest, but I don't think it will do her any harm. Seems as though, for certain TRAs, just being associated with her is now enough to incite shrieks of 'collusion in hatred of trans women' Confused

Which never even existed in the first place Hmm

baroqueandblue · 17/11/2021 10:15

(By which I mean, more people are going to see through the vile inflammatory practices of certain TRAs.)

Amused to see that the fragrant India Willoughby is leading the TRA pitchfork charge against the ingrates. India has previously been a target for TRA ire Indiaself for comments around GRCs and gatekeeping IIRC. But still, 'do it to Julia' is always an effective technique.

prudencepuffin · 17/11/2021 10:18

Its so tiresomely predictable - the ignorant person who "plops" in and describes Rowling as a bigot and everyone absolutely knows they havnt bothered to read a word of the statement that caused all the furore. As Bill Bryson once said - I blow out more intelligent life on my handkerchief (or something like that!), I sometimes wonder if its a robot thats programmed to do that on these threads

FKATondelayo · 17/11/2021 10:21

I am not an HP fan but I am a massive JKR fan, and also have worked in the film business for many years. (Not for Warner or HBO but similar)

While I agree that the 3 actors are hypocrites and turncoats, there is no way she has not fully signed off the documentary and press release. She is renowned for her close involvement and creative control of all aspects of Harry Potter and she is all over copyright and trademarking detail. It's not an accident she's the wealthiest author ever. She has obviously decided to play down involvement in this - and instead focus on the new Christmas book coming out (and I hope another Strike).

JKR always gives the impression that she loves HP franchise very much but she also has lots of new projects to work and focus on now.

www.jkrowling.com/opinions/j-k-rowling-writes-about-her-reasons-for-speaking-out-on-sex-and-gender-issues/

"What I didn’t expect in the aftermath of my cancellation was the avalanche of emails and letters that came showering down upon me, the overwhelming majority of which were positive, grateful and supportive. They came from a cross-section of kind, empathetic and intelligent people, some of them working in fields dealing with gender dysphoria and trans people, who’re all deeply concerned about the way a socio-political concept is influencing politics, medical practice and safeguarding. They’re worried about the dangers to young people, gay people and about the erosion of women’s and girl’s rights. Above all, they’re worried about a climate of fear that serves nobody – least of all trans youth – well."

Epli · 17/11/2021 10:24

The funny thing is that after all those years JK Rowling still writes books that are successful with both children and adult audience, whilst none of these three turned out to have even an ounce of acting talent. Such reunions is all they've got.

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 17/11/2021 10:24

Weren’t two of the main three in some sort of trouble for tax dodging? This doesn’t surprise me.

I know that Emma Watson - who enjoys virtue-signalling - was. It was part of the scandal that The Guardian reported on. She claimed that she needed to hide her money offshore because otherwise people would find out her address.

Sure, Jan.

@Doubletoilandtrouble

Ooooh, the TRAs are turning on Emma Watson and the others?

🍿

Really where !
EmergencyHydrangea · 17/11/2021 10:37

Eh, JK Rowling is completely overrated as a writer, the films are way better

Let's be honest, the three child actors were very average - in fact Emma Watson was awful. The reason the films are so successful is because the books are so loved.

I feel very sorry for JKR for the abuse she suffered in her first marriage and for her 'cancellation'. Using the word women is not transphobic and the fact some people believe it is, is terrifying.

Yeah, thank god someone came up with such great stories.

Oh, hang on Hmm

ChattyLion · 17/11/2021 10:44

If I were JKR's agent, I would license all merchandising rights as 'J K Rowling's Harry Potter'.

Excellent idea!

When the Philosophers Stone film came out I was sucked into the magical world like every other kid. Little did I know years later I’d audition for a role that would change my entire life upside down. I owe everything to @jk_rowling, the casting agents and the Potter films. #20

I loved the books as a child/teenager and they were a huge part of my adolescence.

However I've never really understood the whole obsession with the 'universe' and the subsequent expansions of it. How many times can you flog a dead horse?

I personally lost support of JKR when she received flack for supporting the business that produced anti-bisexual memorabilia and anti-queerism. It was just a bit icky, read the room.

Of all the small businesses she could have supported it had to be one that promoted criticism of a very well established sexuality. That and get the 'L' out of LGBT was just too much.

It felt as though lesbianism was being fetishised over any other sexuality.

The films are pretty crap, especially the first three. The fourth was a big improvement, but the acting skills of Grint, Watson and Radcliffe are… questionable. The books are much better.
JellySaurus · 17/11/2021 10:51

TBH I cannot imagine that JKR is as fuming as most of us on this thread. My image of her is that she is serenely picking her battles. JKR knows how much she is loved, appreciated and respected. She knows how positively she has touched people's lives, and that people's lives are better for having intersected with hers.

For all that her books are about fantasy, JKR is solidly grounded in reality.

picklemewalnuts · 17/11/2021 10:51

I loved the films because of the visual delight they brought to the wizarding world. They didn't improve the stories, develop the characters, or enhance the original in any way, they simply translated it into visual media. Now that in itself is a great skill, an amazing art, and should be celebrated. It's the underlying work of JKR that makes them great, though. Otherwise they'd just be visual candy floss.

If I owed my entire career to 1 person, if I'd known her since I was 8, if I was worth $90m because of her, then not only would I defend her when maligned but I would refuse to take part in any reunion that excluded her. But that's just me. #JKRowling

TheMoreThisReachesTheMainstrea · 17/11/2021 10:57

I’m guessing JKR must be an excellent chess player, because allowing this to go forward, without any sign of her, puts the spotlight very firmly on the odious three and what they did.

ComDummings · 17/11/2021 10:57

Jo knows she has a LOT of support.
