Quote from article:

One feminist said Wonder Women Bingo may have become a target for activists because it featured Harry Potter authorJ. K. Rowling, who has been attacked for questioning the idea that trans women are identical to biological women.

And across the country, blissfully unaware readers think, Whaaaaaaasaaat?*

FindTheTruth · 24/10/2021 07:59

Wonder Women Bingo Game by Isabel Thomas seems to have vanished also from Waterstones, Hive and Foyles. It was from Aug 2020 so it would be useful as a consumer to know if it was discontinued or if TRA staff removed it. It's still on sale for now in WHsmith, Amazon and Blackwells:

Given all the scandals Oxfam has hanging over it , discarding a game celebrating women because it doesn't confirm to Oxfam's "values" really takes the cake.

FindTheTruth · 24/10/2021 08:10

True 334bu but then again it is run by a man accused of covering up sexual harrassment...

Well that's some Xmas presents sorted. What an excellent game.

I see they're also dropping Malala. So oxfam are prioritising men's feelings over women who've fought for basic human rights for women.

I can't imagine she'll be impressed.

Also notice in the happy families version they include Cindy Sherman, the artist queen of dressing up to be something you're not.

Excellent stocking filler:

One version got withdrawn by the manufacturer, because it included the actor now known as Elliot Page, with the name and hair length EP had at that time. Could it be that Waterstones decided not to bother with stocking the replacement?

FindTheTruth · 24/10/2021 08:32

interesting Purgatory - maybe

I'd happily buy this from a women's charity, I'd like more money to go to women's causes

I also wonder whether it’s the inclusion of the actor Page which was found “problematic” rather than JK. It’s still unnecessary to remove it from sale however otherwise we’d better a in every film made which Page appears in.

LizzieSiddal · 24/10/2021 08:39

*we’d better bin

Women just can't have anything anymore. Publishers are just are going to go "what's the point of publishing anything with 'women' in the title when some mentioned women might be cancelled or some might think they aren't women anymore?" We are going further back in time when everything was about men.

reminds me a bit of the Spice Girls scooter court case after Geri Halliwell left the band.

"Feminist campaigner Julie Bindel suggested the game may have been ditched because it includes Rowling and fellow author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who have challenged the transgender belief that there is no difference between trans and biological women."

Well this is the perfect time to remind people of this blistering seminal piece of writing by Chimamanda: 'It's Obscene'. yes it's obscene.

Probably paranoia to the max, but didn't this only get dropped into the GC Christmas shopping thread yesterday....?

FindTheTruth · 24/10/2021 09:15

Oooooh @CompleteGinasaur. No wait, just checked the article and it was an email last week.

I've just followed the link upthread to buy the card game from WHSmith as a stocking filler. It's showing up as in stock, but for some reason it can't be added to basket to buy. Everything else seems to be going in OK. Has there been a sudden rush on stock (in which case why not show as Temporarily Unavailable or something?) or more sinister forces at work?

Honestly, if WHSmith, with their tatty shopfronts and dated, shabby interiors are choosing to turn away customers for wanting something that celebrates actual women, then I'm going to shake off my instinctive resistance to Amazon and embrace their non-judgemental model of retail. (Can't bring myself to bother with Wokerstones these days.)

Indeed. One person I know - who isn’t generally a ‘boycott’ person told me (when Haiti broke) ‘I saw a calendar I thought you’d really like in the Oxfam window - but it’s Oxfam and they aren’t getting my money.’ He’s refused to shop there ever since.

I still have a monthly direct debit to Oxfam - that's going and I will be writing to them to tell them why. Will be looking for another charity that provides overseas aid but understands the value of single sex spaces so if anyone has any suggestions...

KittenKong · 24/10/2021 09:58

SOS children’s villages. Very local, non religious.

I'm trying to get my head round the idea that it's offensive to say EP was, at some stage of EP's life, an inspirational woman. Is that something EP objects to, or are other people objecting on EP's behalf?

KittenKong · 24/10/2021 13:16

Inspirational how though? What did they do to inspire women (can’t say that I know much about them until the recent turn of events)

MassiveHoard · 24/10/2021 13:25

This is yet another example of a big charity organisation that has forgotten fundamental principles of human rights for all humans. Which sometimes means appearing unkind to those who act in the role if oppressor. Basic integrity as a core value needs to be taught in schools and adopted by those in power.

foodfiend · 24/10/2021 13:28

Does anyone know what happened to the woman Alicia who said in this video (Posie Parker and others in Hyde Park in August this year) that she'd lost her job at Oxfam after saying that a woman is an adult human female, and that she would be taking legal action. (She speaks about 10m into the video.)
