AIBU to actually be starting to like the term cis?

Hopefully this is allowed. Not bashing anyone.

I hated the term cis however this morning it hit me that we may be better embracing it if we can't eradicate it.

We have TWAW etc. But in the next however many years, we may find it easier, for example you're on a dating site "cis woman seeking cis man" therefore you will (hopefully) link with genetically male partners. Rather than "seeking a man" and you may possibly end up with a trans man. Again, no judgement or bashing, however I only ever wanted to be with someone who was genetically male, it's just my preference and I should be able to state this in a simple way.

So you would be able to request a man (if happy with cis or trans man) or woman, a cis man/woman and the subsections of lesbian or gay.

Prepared to be told IABU and sure that someone will likely be able to point out why this is bad. I'm not wanting this to be a bashing thread. I'm just starting to think the term may become useful in the not-too-distant future.

Also prepared this may end up deleted.

You know they don't actually change sex, don't you? To be trans you don't need to change anything about yourself. You don't need to have a diagnosis, be on hormones, have surgery (90%+ don't), even dress in "women's clothes".
My husband could announce he is now a woman and walk across the road to the leisure centre and access the women's changing rooms. No one can challenge him off course, that's transphobic.

@Beautiful3

We don't need more labels nor do we need to explain ourselves to anyone. We go by our actual names for a reason! I am beautiful3, you do not need to know if I am a woman/man/trans/gay.
Yes, @Beautiful3!!!

Women trying so damn hard to campaign for feminism and women's rights that they ostracize those who identify as women. How lovely.
Being a woman isn’t a fucking performance, it’s a biological reality. Feminists don’t owe men anything, irrelevant of how they identify.
HipTightOnions · 28/09/2021 12:52

Ok, so what if they've had male to female surgery?

This must be a wind-up, but no, there is no surgery that turns a male person into a female person.

OurMamInHavianas · 28/09/2021 12:52

Raindow:
They're not doing it for the fun of it, are they?

Approximately 85% to 95% are in it for the “fun”. And are fully intact males. I don’t think I’m allowed to tell you the 3 letters to look for, but you can google Ray Blanchard yourself.

GCAcademic · 28/09/2021 12:53

If we all embraced the term "cis woman", you can bet your bottom dollar that the TRAs would come after that term next. The point is that women shouldn't be able to define ourselves and speak for ourselves as a group. Some trans women are already calling themselves cis women.

I'm a woman, I'm not a subset of anyone else's fantasy.

YABU.

For anyone who is wondering why single sex spaces are so important to women -

Women are currently self excluding from rape crisis services due to there being no single sex groups or spaces.

A recent judicial review recently concluded that there are women being raped and sexually assaulted by convicted sex offender transwomen who are housed in the female prison estate but a transwoman's need to socialise with women overrides women's safety.

There is a constant ridiculing of the need for single sex toilets. We often hear 'they just want to pee!!'. It's an attempt to minimise women's need for sex segregated spaces for reasons related to their biology.

There was a debate in the Scottish Parliament in which some elected officials voted against rape survivors being able to request a female examiner.

Sex is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 and there are exemptions allowed for single sex spaces. There is a push from certain quarters (including Stonewall) to remove these single sex exemptions, effectively making every space mixed sex.

I hope you never need medical treatment, then. Or legal protection for discrimination.
HandsOffMyRights · 28/09/2021 12:55

Beautiful believe me, if you were lying on an operating table they'd need to know your sex.

Are you new here?

You can't get a thread deleted just because you've failed to argue a coherent point and had to resort to smearing posters as transphobes.

FOJN · 28/09/2021 12:55

"cis woman seeking cis man"

This will have you branded a transphobe.

I will not permit males to decide how I am referred to. Rebranding women to give context to gender identity and then name calling anyone who refuses to embrace the change is bullying and misogyny.

Sonarl · 28/09/2021 12:56

"Ok, so what if they've had male to female surgery?"

You know this isn't actually possible right? Men can remove their penis and testicles and have breast implants, but they are still male.

Their DNA, skeleton, body is still male. Whether or not they are still men or transwomen is a matter of perception, gender identity, kindness on the part of women (and it's running out).

Naunet · 28/09/2021 12:56

Ok, so what if they've had male to female surgery?

Ohh, a scientist 🤣
THERE IS NO SUCH SURGERY. Do you understand what biological sex is? Do you believe in lady brains or something?

GCAcademic · 28/09/2021 12:56

They're not.

They are.

See, anyone can make a baseless assertion. Did you look up Blanchard? An actual specialist in the field of gender identity?

Beowulfa · 28/09/2021 12:57

Glad to see so many other women recognise cis/genderwoo for the pernicious bollocks it is.

Bollocks imposed by people with bollocks for the benefit of people with bollocks.

ShrillSiren · 28/09/2021 12:57

I'm not surprised you've reported. You won't be the first or the last. And it'll eventually get shunted off to the naughty corner, no doubt.

What scares you so much about women talking about this? Does the cognitive dissonance hurt?

Nahhh · 28/09/2021 12:57

I’d prefer a trans man to differentiate himself as a trans man than a man calling himself a cis man

Did you tell your parents too?
scarpa · 28/09/2021 12:58

If you're happy sharing the word woman why do you need another word?

Jane - well, I'm happy to use woman for all biologically female and trans women, and man for biologically male/trans men in 95% of scenarios. I know some people aren't. So I'm happy to be referred to/refer to myself as cis if it's useful in that sense.

Because peoples attitudes are disgusting. Painting all trans people with the same stick is disgusting.
Sonarl · 28/09/2021 13:00

And even if/when this thread gets shutdown - do you think that means you've won and imposed your views on all the women on this thread? That we will all magically believe that men can become women? I'm here to tell you that it won't. More and more women have had enough and being called "people with vaginas" by the lancet last week had peaked thousands and thousands more.

I know a fair amount of trans people, men and women, through my old job/through friends. None of them are the 3 letters you're thinking of. Now, maybe I know have a statistically unrepresentative collection of trans people, but it's also possible you're wrong.
