EmbarrassingAdmissions · 20/09/2021 11:43

I have been more moved by the plight of children who have had their mother killed by a man (often their father), causing them to lose a parent

Yes!

Why on earth is this compassion and drive to do something completely lacking when it comes to the discourse about domestic and intimate partner violence?

EdgeOfACoin · 20/09/2021 11:43

@herecomesthsun

Where do the Greens stand on this?
Well given that in 2016 they classified people as 'men' and 'non-men', not very well.
herecomesthsun · 20/09/2021 11:44

policy.greenparty.org.uk/rr.html

they look pretty weak on this too

The Women's Equality Party don't look much better

Depressing isn't?

ArabellaScott · 20/09/2021 11:44

@MrsOvertonsWindow

It seems as if the sheer numbers of women and now men outraged at the onslaught on our language, rights and especially the relentless targeting of children has had an impact on the media. It's become impossible to ignore. Add to that the Lib Dems massive stupidity in demanding the removal of all single sex spaces and here we are.
PUUUUUUULLL.
ArabellaScott · 20/09/2021 11:45

@PaleGreenGhost

I don't get it when "I've got a friend with a trans child" is a gotcha. As if we don't know children caught up in this. As if that, along with single sex provisions, isn't the issue driving our activism on this subject. So, you've got a friend whose child is painfully reacting to the homophobia and sexism endemic in our society? And you are supporting them how?
Anymore than 'I've got a friend who is a woman' is a gotcha. Or even 'I am a bloody woman'.
herecomesthsun · 20/09/2021 11:46

Pull???

Goodness me, it's hard to think of the Tories as the feminist party of choice.

teawamutu · 20/09/2021 11:47

Missed this but looking forward to the catch up.

Fucking FINALLY.

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 20/09/2021 11:47

@herecomesthsun

Where do the Greens stand on this?
One of the Scottish Greens’ most prominent MSPs has resigned abruptly from the party, citing its “intolerance” to open discussion of potential conflicts between women’s and transgender rights. Andy Wightman, the Scottish Greens’ list member for Lothian region and a highly respected campaigner for tenants’ rights and land reform, stated in his resignation letter published on Friday afternoon: “Some of the language, approaches and postures of the party and its spokespeople have been provocative, alienating and confrontational for many women and men”.
HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 20/09/2021 11:48

From the Guardian a few months ago

littlbrowndog · 20/09/2021 11:50

The greens in Scotland are TWAW and TMAM

KittenKong · 20/09/2021 11:51

Now in honesty (since I missed it), shall I listen on catch up or will it give me a stroke?

NotDavidTennant · 20/09/2021 11:51

They're covering this now because Rosie Duffield being afraid to go to the Labour conference has made this into a talking point within the Westminster bubble. While I hope that this marks a breakthrough of the issue into mainstream news coverage, I can also see them dropping it if a 'juicier' political story comes along.

Helleofabore · 20/09/2021 11:52

How unexpected… transwomen are women is trending on Twitter.

It surely infuriates many that naughty naughty women won’t accept the mantra.

Good. Let's hope lots more people are encouraged to look more deeply into the matters involved, ask questions and seek solid, evidence based answers.

@nauticant

She's now saying that the most important thing she ever heard was at a LibDem conference: the wife of transwoman spoke movingly about how her husband had had his suicidality solved by transition which meant their kiddies didn't lose a parent. Hooray!
I have been married for quite some years and have had children.

In order to maintain these relationships, I have made compromises on the way that have not been in my own interests.

I recognise that some of these are dysfunctional and I do not offer them as a template to others as a right or wrong way of going about their lives, nor as a basis in law.

Blibbyblobby · 20/09/2021 12:05

[quote MrsOvertonsWindow]I missed all this but heard the Emma interview Charlie Webster who was abused (along with other girls) by her sports coach. Her programme is on BBC1 at 10.30 tonight.
It sounds well worth watching and of course will exemplify the lengths that some men will go to to seek out girls in order to abuse them.

While absolutely in favour of single sex spaces, rights, protections and opportunities until such a time as female-bodied people have the same level of social, political and economic power as male, I am not convinced by the idea that men will adopt jobs or positions solely in order to seek out girls/women/children to abuse them. Sadly, I think it's more likely that these are crimes of opportunity and many more males (no, not all males) would abuse given the opportunity.

I base that on the background level of low level sexualised "banter" and harassment I've had from male people over my whole life, and the ongoing cultural apologies / circumstantial excuses that come out whenever a woman or child more worldly than a nun is abused.

I’m watching this space wrt the Greens. I and many others joined the party last month to vote for Shahrar Ali as the new leader. He very much knows what a woman is and he isn’t afraid to say it either.
Theeyeballsinthesky · 20/09/2021 12:06

Twitter is having a full on beeee lkiiinddd I stand with my trans sisters moment

Somewhat depressing to see the Chief Executive of Hospice UK believes TWAW

purplesequins · 20/09/2021 12:09

hmm usually the programme would be on sounds by this time...
usually it's delayed if they have to edit out foul language of live callers...

ArabellaScott · 20/09/2021 12:09

Oh, Twitter will. Twitter is all sound and fury.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/09/2021 12:11

I caught most of this interview by chance. Will listen again as it was very satisfying. Then I listened to a very good feature on breast cancer diagnosis, arising out of Julia Bradbury's decision to go public about having just been diagnosed with it, followed by the feature mentioned above about sports coaches. I don't normally listen to WH but today was hard-hitting so maybe I should give it another go.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 20/09/2021 12:13

@ArabellaScott

Oh, Twitter will. Twitter is all sound and fury.
And would that be because it's a platform from which so many women who support women's rights have been removed?

And where others are cowed into silence because few people can cope with the pile-on?

BigGreenOlives · 20/09/2021 12:13

So annoying, couldn’t listen to this as driving trans son back to uni… interestingly he thinks all the fuss about pronouns is a waste of time as it doesn’t achieve anything.

Mollyollydolly · 20/09/2021 12:17

@nauticant

I think one thing that's changed is journalists who like to enhance their profile by showing up politicians as being clueless, mendacious, or preferably both, have realised that if they get a trans activist politician on their programme they can ask them some pretty simple questions and just watch as the politician implodes.
And maybe they feel they've been given 'permission' by the boys Marr and Webb which infuriates me in itself. Anyway Emma is great at hard interviews about time.
