Sunday 19th Sept 925am.
He won't answer the question. Andrew Marr keeps pushing.

@MishyJDI

Most trans women I talk to identify readily as adult human females, and transmen as adult human males. So I don't really see the issue, other than it being a dog whistle for attempted crass segregation.
Bless them. My kids believe in Father Christmas. It’s adorable isn’t it?
RedToothBrush · 19/09/2021 10:49

@Mummyoflittledragon

You’re welcome. I’ve just reread the transcript without listening the the words. The transcript is even worse tbh. He’s a complete imbecile, isn’t he?! How can anyone, who is obviously relatively intelligent be so blindingly stupid? The mind boggles. I just don’t get it at all.
He's a puppet.

He's spineless.

He's weak and pathetic.

He's illiberal and anti-democratic debate.

Stupid? Nope. Selfish and putting his own personal career first ahead of the public at large.

I hope he gets eaten alive by the press and the next election.

endofthelinefinally · 19/09/2021 10:49

Ferring. 1.4 million. The Lib Dems obviously want the money. I am guessing they are a bit short on big donors.

Cailin66 · 19/09/2021 10:50

@Vargas

I'm so glad this issue is getting more and more sunlight. I don't normally watch Marr but im looking forward to watching this on catch-up! Bye bye Lib Dems.
It’s available now on the iplayer
littlbrowndog · 19/09/2021 10:51

Yeah he seems to like the power

So fuck off women. You have no rights to anything

Helleofabore · 19/09/2021 10:51

It does show though an extreme level of distraction behaviour. What is a woman? Oooh. Look a squirrel, you know grey squirrels are causing such division amongst squirrels.

What is a woman? Ok. You don’t like squirrels, what about a cute kitten?

What is a woman? Well, you know cute kitten pics are so last year, you’re right. I want to talk about squirrels and that king of the squirrels, he is a bad acorn! He is causing all sorts of division.

It comes across as blathering, as complete nonsense with no evidence provided, but great distraction training Ed Davey has had.

somethinginoffensive · 19/09/2021 10:52

But also why, when he is asked about women does he immediately talk about trans rights?

That's what he did on R4 as well. I hope it makes people who are less aware of the issue go "eh?"

PickAChew · 19/09/2021 10:53

What? They've changed their genetic makeup? I've been put of the lab for a few years but hadn't realised that genetic research had progressed so far, since then.

@somethinginoffensive

Oops, posted too soon. I was just agreeing with this comment. I might stick it on a postcard and send it to him.
Maybe we should send a version of it to all the party leaders.

To recap:

but I do hope Kier Starmer is watching and learning

being unable to agree with 99% of the population about the definition of the word 'woman' on national TV will make you look like an unelectable twat, Keir

littlbrowndog · 19/09/2021 10:55

They all do this something

Khan was the same

Asked about women

Can’t actually talk about women

I like the squirells thing. So true

Cam77 · 19/09/2021 11:00

I wish we would expect politicians and journalists to focus on the economy, housing, decent jobs, the NHS, and the environment ... rather than these endless culture war issues.

Things like the trans arguments, the so called pay gap, diversity etc are all great fun on Twitter and University campuses, but they’re irrelevant to 95% of people. Elections are won on the economy, housing, decent jobs, the NHS. The Tories in particular are getting a ridiculous free rid - enabled no doubt by many Tony Blair type liberals in the Labour Party who couldn’t care less about the less well off in this country and only care about fringe woke issues and who America is going to bomb next.

OldCrone · 19/09/2021 11:04

ED Yes, I mean, we’ve made it very clear and what we’re concerned about is that there does need to be a debate in wider society. And that debate is not being had because of Boris Johnson’s failure to lead.

Has he forgotten who has been insisting on 'no debate' for the last few years?

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 19/09/2021 11:07

They’re relevant to 51% of the population.
Mummyoflittledragon · 19/09/2021 11:10

Agreed @OldCrone
And it’s all BJ’s fault because he’s toxified the debate and set up a cultural war in no 10. I had no idea BJ (idiot though he is) had such far reaching tentacles in the US and on Twatter.

ED also talked of BJ’s failure to lead. I think this is one of the only places, where BJ has to some extent led the Tory party.

"ED: I’ve made it clear on our position on trans right, no one can criticise me for that.

That smacks of 'please don't hurt me, I did what you told me to do!'"

Yes. It's a plea for mercy isn't it. Unsurprising really given the vitriolic, violent rhetoric coming from the revolting MRAs who have latched so successfully on to trans people.

Zeugma · 19/09/2021 11:12

He's been rigorously coached not to say the word 'woman'. He didn't say it once in the Today interview a few days ago. He finally did have to say it this morning, but NB, that was solely in the context of 'a transwoman is a woman'. It leaps out in the transcript (thank you for that, mummyoflittledragon - most illuminating)

He's been told that he's not allowed to concede that women, natal women, even exist.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/09/2021 11:12

Hmmph Well Boris has appointed someone who understands biology, Liz Truss, to be a Minister. I expect that's what Davey means.

OldCrone · 19/09/2021 11:13

Things like the trans arguments, the so called pay gap, diversity etc are all great fun on Twitter and University campuses, but they’re irrelevant to 95% of people.

Is 95% a typo? These things are only irrelevant to straight white males who have no children and no women in their lives who they care about.

donquixotedelamancha · 19/09/2021 11:16

@MishyJDI Most trans women I talk to identify readily as adult human females, and transmen as adult human males.

I don't believe you. I know two transwomen personally and quite a few trans men professionally. They all know what sex they are.

If you really know lots of people who believe that mammals can change sex by 'identifying' then I would ask yourself whether you are attracting stupid friends.

Honestly I don't see a difference between this nonsense and saying 'i know lots of black people who support segregation'. Trans people are just people, some of them are Scientists, they are not unusually prone to Science denial.

Cam77 · 19/09/2021 11:18

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken
Everything is reverent to everyone. But I think the state of the economy, housing, jobs, and the NHS are more important to more women in the UK than what we call some random person who has a penis but claims to feel like a female.

dyslek · 19/09/2021 11:20

The impression I get from reading the transcripts is that Ed is cross that the LibDems are being made to look idotic on this issue, when every other party is toeing the same line (but Johnson is keeping quiet about it, forcing Lab and LibDems to lose credibility with the electorate)

I find that chilling if you think about it too deeply.

donquixotedelamancha · 19/09/2021 11:20

I think this is one of the only places, where BJ has to some extent led the Tory party.

I think the leadership has been largely Liz Truss and a few others but BJ is enough of a populist to realise the value. Frankly, anyone who can't tell where the public are on self ID isn't capable of leading a political party.

Unfortunately poverty hits women first. If you can see sex based problems relating to poverty which include housing, treatment at school, abusive relationships, career development, health related issues then you aren't going to solve a lot of the practical problems women have.

Its easier just to cover them up with gender...

corlan · 19/09/2021 11:21

I've just emailed [email protected] to complain - a waste of time I'm sure, but this has really stuck in my throat.
I have voted Lib Dem all my life as a tactical vote to keep the Tories out. This stinks - I honestly don't think I can hold my nose and vote for them again.

FemaleAndLearning · 19/09/2021 11:24

I agree, why when asked about women do politicians start talking about transgender issues. Can you imagine doing that to any other protected characteristic?
