Sunday 19th Sept 925am.
He won't answer the question. Andrew Marr keeps pushing.

So nice to see Aimee's grinning face at the foot of that, just to remind everyone.

I really can believe that there are people out there thinking that a male on cross-sex hormones can't produce sperm.

I teach a lot of teens who think you can take a pill and become the opposite sex. It is shocking how poorly informed people are and how much drivel is spread online.

andyoldlabour · 20/09/2021 10:29

Why was Davey looking so flustered and why was he babbling away, spouting gibberish?

Cos Davy knows if he doesn't appease his powerful federal LDs who are trans he will have a mutiny on his hands and they will do a Farron on him.

I really can believe that there are people out there thinking that a male on cross-sex hormones can't produce sperm.

I think well into my twenties I wasn't sure whether the pill would give you a positive pregnancy test. The simple explanation of how the pill works that you'd see in teenage magazines and leaflets was "the pill uses hormones to trick your body into thinking you are pregnant so you don't ovulate". Not a big jump to wonder whether a body that thought it was pregnant enough to stop ovulation might also produce whatever a urine test was looking for.

I'm not stupid, far from it, I was smart enough to extrapolate from what I did know, just not in possession of enough facts.

I can absolutely believe many people assume a male taking female hormones won't produce sperm. Teenage me would certainly have thought it was possible and tried to find out for sure. (However even if it had been true teenage me would also have not trusted said male to be taking them enough to be sure sperm production had stopped).

Tim Farron got stabbed in the back for being a Christian, iirc. He argued he could hold a private belief and still support Party policy that was different. The Lib Dems thought differently - apparently all personal beliefs must line up with the Party doctrines.

I knew a Lib Dem MP well during the time of the back-stabbing of Charles Kennedy. The booze was a problem, but it was apparently a front for why Teather et al really got rid of him, according to said MP - these days we'd say it because Kennedy wasn't 'woke' enough. He was a common sense politician.

The Lib Dems are fucking ruthless.

Did anybody watch the bbc 10 pm news last night. Extraordinary fawning over Ed Davey and the lib dems.

Yes, it was puketastically obsequious.

The Marr interview definitely seems to be picking up on the Lib Dem problem with liberalism and democracy.

I don't think its going unnoticed...

He wants to give something away that belongs to women (the very word to define us; spaces set aside for our privacy and safety; sports that enable us to compete fairly; data that is collected to understand and help us). That has no detrimental effect on him at all - just a nice bit of kudos from some quarters and a warm fuzzy feeling.
Trans rights are important, but they are not the same as women's rights. All the kindness or pity for some in that group who struggle with their identity or mental health does not justify the disdain or bullying of women that comes with saying Transwomen Are Women. Engage with the issues Mr Davey - the real clash of rights - and stop sloganeering. We cannot get anywhere if the foundational tenet of your belief denies reality, and pointing that out is 'transphobic'.
It's also political self-harm. You won't win seats from Labour Party supporters who stopped voting Labour precisely because of this; nor Tories either. You definitely won't win them from the women who turned away when Jo Swinson made exactly this mistake or finding a dictionary definition of a biological term; a term well-understood by everyone, controversial. Or when Layla Moran said, in parliament that she'd be happy to share a changing room with a bearded man because she doesn't judge; she 'sees the soul'. That's nice, but many women and girls have good reason to not be so trusting.
I am actually aghast that women have to explain any of this. Not least to MPs (edited by one of The Times moderator)

This is a very succinct comment on interview with Davey boy? / girl? . I'm afraid, unlike Layla Moran, I am can't see into his true soul. It was written by Josephine March and was in the commentary on The Times article that Jaysmith referenced a few posts above.

p.s. I was wondering if Layla Moran could see the Lottery numbers ahead of the draw. But then I am not so convinced of her/ his? psychic abilities as she/he? can't seem to envisage how many voters LD's are going to lose with all this push for the removal of safety, dignity and fairness from women and girls. All the while telling us we're nothing but a notion in any man's head if he so chooses.

2fallsagain · 20/09/2021 15:14

So it looks like Sadiq Khan, Ed Davey and Layla Moran have all quoted incorrect and suicide stats over the last two days. This is appalling and actually is totally counter to what GIDS have to say which is that trans identified kids are not at greater risk of self harm.

And also, 2falls goes against the Samaritans guidelines for reporting on suicide.

It's totally fucking irresponsible.

endofthelinefinally · 20/09/2021 16:20

Why does nobody challenge this? Do the interviewing journalists not check these statements?

Yes I'm wondering if we can complain to the broadcaster.
Tibtom · 20/09/2021 18:14

Poor mental health is a contraindication for puberty blockers so being suicidal should be a reason for not prescribing them.

It would be spectacularly helpful if Samaritans were to take a principled stand and make that complaint to the relevant organisations/broadcasters and individuals and get the to pledge not to do it again.

Ditto, if relevant stakeholder organisations did the same to the broadcasters then it might have more impact when taken in concert with the complaints from individuals.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 20/09/2021 18:18

I think the newish CEO of The Samaritans is the ex CEO of girl guides so I’d say there’s no chance they’ll do that

And there we have the virtue go-round of personnel and institutional capture in a spectacularly depressing nutshell.
endofthelinefinally · 20/09/2021 19:20

It is all networking. The same people going round and round taking influential positions in organisations. It is horrible.

Childrenofthestones · 20/09/2021 19:35

Ten year ban for wearing a T shirt? Feck me!
In The Gulag Archipelago Alexander Solzhenitsyn describes people people getting ten years in the gulag for some sleight that upset the party. It was called getting a tenner.
She's just got LibDem a tenner for wearing a T shirt.😟

I'd forgotten that. Well, she is going to have to figure something out.

She has a duty of care and her remit are a very vulnerable population.

She'll also have access to the stats on who is in need of her charity's work the most. Perhaps she'll have a penny dropping soon. The stakes are very high at the Samaritans compared to Guiding.

I wonder if anyone could get in touch with More or Less (R4) and ask them where this statistic came from?
