Quite jarring to hear him say it out loud but yes, this white man has stated love on the radio that there should be no spaces where biological males can’t go.
Just before 8am.

I’m not a regular poster on these boards (frequent reader with interest and admiration however! Smile) But I’ve been a Lib Dem member since 2015 and was recently approached to stand as a local councillor.

On the back of Ed Davey’s comments this morning I’ve just cancelled my party membership. I’m aligned with the Lib Dems on many other issues, but I won’t lend my support, even tacitly, to any party that persists in throwing women’s sex-based rights under the bus. And I’m sure I’m far from alone among the voting population

ChattyLion · 17/09/2021 13:15

Ed Davy can piss right off with his dangerous male privilege saying that.
And Christ, if he’s the brightest and best that the Lib Dems have got to gather around, they really are fucked aren’t they?

I really want a decent non-sexist opposition party to emerge post-Covid and there just doesn’t seem to be anything professional or inspiring actually happening at the moment in LDs or Labour.
Lifelong Labour voter here and I won’t ever vote Tory. It’s really depressing.

If he bothers to read his Twitter page he'll find out what people think of ignoring women's rights to safe spaces. A real vote winner, not!

EishetChayil · 17/09/2021 13:27

With this and the revelations about what Mridul Wadwa said in that meeting, TRAs (MRAs) are becoming more and more blatant.

Mollyollydolly · 17/09/2021 13:28

We've got Tories forever. People will not vote for this BS. I know the tories are awful but at least some of them are holding onto material reality. Breaks my heart the Lib Dems and Labour have lost their collective minds.

Jaysmith71 · 17/09/2021 13:30

We've got Tories forever.

And it is reaching the stage that we stop thinking about how to get them out and start considering what we can do to keep them in but make them a bit less Tory.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/09/2021 13:47

Lib Dem were also the only ones, who came knocking. Not last election, the one before. I told the man canvasing for votes to leave the property immediately! So sad. Both dh and I would like to be Lib Dem voters.

MajesticWhine · 17/09/2021 13:54

I have supported Libdems for decades. But this from their leader is too much. Nice of him to be clear though, with his luxury beliefs that will never affect him.

Remoteso · 17/09/2021 14:22

Agree. Sadly. I was a LD supporter - in Jo Swimson's constituency and supported her until she lost the ability to describe what a woman is (she know, of course she knows, the all fucking know).

Ed Davey can Angry

futureghost · 17/09/2021 14:43

ED "yeh, because I think some of the arguments that are put against this just don't understand the facts and experience. You know, transpeople are some of the most discriminated against in our society. They suffer violence. They suffer harassment."

This boils my piss. The deep rooted misogyny is so clear, why can't he see it? His position here is very clear. That the violence and harassment women face is ALWAYS secondary to that of any other group, ALWAYS secondary to any other agenda, and the violence and harassment women face is always acceptable collateral damage for another cause.

StandWithYou · 17/09/2021 14:55

Ed Davy is now on the record saying this - I think that is what JW was after as he didn’t push it further (or it may have been time constraints). When the next incident occurs in prisons, changing rooms, wards etc - and unfortunately there will be a next time - this will be brought up and hopefully Ed will be challenged on it and he won’t be able to answer it. We will hold these people to account but in the meantime women and girls will be harmed. This on the day that VAWG is supposed to be taken seriously. Safe spaces protect women and girls from men.

Vargas · 17/09/2021 15:03

Lib Dems are dead to me. Misogynist 'progressives' make my blood boil.

You are very far from alone.
KaycePollard · 17/09/2021 15:27

Absolutely.

You can only think that transwomen are the most oppressed if you deliberately overlook culturally entrenched misogyny and actual murders of women, the daily sexism all women and girls put up with, and the international phenomenon of femicide.

Feelingoktoday · 17/09/2021 15:46

Transwomen are oppressed …….by men.

It’s a joke a complete disgrace. My partner tells me I keep going on and on about this - he doesn’t get it because he is male. We can’t discuss it anymore otherwise we will split up.

merrymouse · 17/09/2021 16:10

You can only think they are the most oppressed if you can actually explain what ‘trans’ means. It’s a completely subjective concept.

It’s also irrelevant. For various reasons some men are abused and oppressed. That doesn’t mean they are women.

Well done. I made that choice a few years ago. I'd been in the party long enough to remember when it was genuinely liberal.

And it is reaching the stage that we stop thinking about how to get them out and start considering what we can do to keep them in but make them a bit less Tory.

Christ that is a depressing thought. I don't disagree but just can't bring myself to vote for my local (particularly sleazy) Tory MP.

nauticant · 17/09/2021 16:21

I'd imagine by now Davey will have been told of the decision in the Keira Bell case and will be assuming that in some way this shows that he's on the right side of history after all. Therefore his comments this morning can stand on their own without needing to be explained.

Well, let's see. I think the gloss will come off today's celebrations rather soon.

Chrysanthemum5 · 17/09/2021 16:28

With this and the Bell ruling I could just cry. I can't believe women and children are so unimportant that we have to tolerate this.

Don't let it get you down. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and bit by misogynist, tone deaf bit, women are getting angrier and more organised, and the number of them is getting steadily larger. And they all have votes .
Seainasive · 17/09/2021 16:39

Until this morning, I had no idea who Ed Davy was. But now I will always remember him and what he said.

JoodyBlue · 17/09/2021 16:46

At least what he said was clear, uninequivocal. There should be no single sex spaces in society. There is no argument to counter. That was his statement. It is very easy to explain to any one asking for a Lib Dem vote now the reason why not. The leader was to do away with women's space. He said it on prime time Radio 4. Any women voting now for them, votes for that.

Thank you, @nauticant. I've emailed Daisy Cooper (my MP) to ask for her thoughts.

I'm not holding out much hope though, as I know she's met with Maya and some other local feminists to hear their concerns, and stuck very firmly to the party line.

Freespeecher · 17/09/2021 18:52

Scratching my head at this one. I assumed politicians would be cynical enough to at least obfuscate rather than risk pissing off 50% of the electorate to chase the votes of

Jaysmith71 · 17/09/2021 19:07

Freespeecher

Because they really think this is progressive and popular, opposed only by bigots who want to bring back Section 28.
