Frances Barber Under Attack From TRAs

ScreamingMeMe · 18/07/2021 23:02

Looks like they are unhappy with her because she supports JK Rowling. Some little arsehole has contacted the theatre she is currently working at, to try and get her sacked.

She is not having it. Another strong, formidable woman.

If you are cheering her on here it's worth taking a step back and thinking about whether you think treating people this unkindly is okay. Even if you believe Jay is in the wrong here, you do have to admit that Frances has acted hugely disproportionately when actively threatening him.

If you want to ignore islamophobic comments, fine, but ask yourself what other beliefs and behaviours you'll excuse just because you want to agree with other people who are purportedly GC.

OhHolyJesus · 19/07/2021 15:10

They're good mates apparently so the discussions would be interesting.

Not to derail but I'm very interested to see what happens, if anything with McKellen as his other good mate is Sir Patrick Stewart, supporter of women and domestic violence survivor.

McKellen will be fully aware of what this Jay has been doing. I'd love to hear his reaction and see how much support he will give Frances. I hope he sees the mountain before him he needs to climb.

Deliriumoftheendless · 19/07/2021 15:19

Some of you might want to go look at the people who TRAs approve of and wonder if maybe they should be criticised too. Then go try it.

What????

She is unkind??? She wasn't the one that tried to get someone fired for holding a perfectly legitimate opinion!!!

Tell him to be kind! Tell him to stop persecuting women who won't buy into this belief system & see the damage it is doing to women!!!

FloralBunting · 19/07/2021 15:23

You know what? I wouldn't have given him the time of day. Icy put downs, a complaint to his employers and block.
But I am not Frances Barber, and I will not judge a woman for being fearsomely angry about the arrogant presumption of this man, and I really wouldn't want to be the person telling her she shouldn't be so unkind.

JKR was and always has been the most measured, compassionate writer about this, and they have just escalated to open death threats. Frances Barber, with the best will in the world, isn't nearly as untouchable as JKR.
So has she spoken with more vehemence than I would have done? Sure.
Will I support those who think a woman is obligated to be kind to people who will be no such thing to her? Not a fucking chance.

Fuck kind. Tone police the totalitarians, your scolding of those who bite back when we've had enough of it is meaningless.

What is the difference between her threat and his threat in your eyes that makes her threat disproportionate?

Ekofisk · 19/07/2021 15:24

McKellen will be fully aware of what this Jay has been doing.

Jay directed their tweets to Ian McKellen, the theatre and the promoter.

Really? So she reacts to someone trying to get her fired and it's her fault? Nope, sorry not having it. Good for her standing up for herself. Her views are her own and she stands by them. Trying to get someone fired because they have a different view is absolutely pathetic and should be called out. There's too many bullies against women at the moment.
RedDogsBeg · 19/07/2021 15:28

What is Islamophobic about calling out the disgustingly misogynistic comments of that taxi driver?

TRAs and trans allies excuse and ignore all manner of reprehensible behaviour on their side including and not limited to sending porn, death threats, rape threats, violent imagery, threats of violence, threats of sexual violence, doxxing, threatening women's livelihoods and now threats of pipe bombs in letterboxes.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 19/07/2021 15:30

No, I don’t think so. He threatened her job. She threatened a lawsuit. Other people jumped in to the argument.

I see it as - he started it, she just responded. If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen (or protect your tweets as Jay has done).

RedDogsBeg · 19/07/2021 15:30

Plus Frances Barber has specifically stated she doesn't want Jay to be fired, unlike him wanting her to get fired, or did you miss that?

KittenKong · 19/07/2021 15:31

As my mum used to say ‘don’t start something you can’t finish’.

PronounssheRa · 19/07/2021 15:35

Unkindly. He has tried to destroy her livelihood and its not the first women this has happened to. She can deal with it however she choses, its time bullies like this were tackled, because being kind gets women nowhere.

Also today some clown on twitter is threatening JRK with pipebombs. Just be kind though.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 19/07/2021 15:37

If you try and get someone sacked, don't complain when they get angry about it.

Twistiesandshout · 19/07/2021 15:43

I never knew of her before, but I now love her!

Megasausagehead · 19/07/2021 15:45

In her total defence on that part, these TRAs make threats and abuse people from an expectation that they will crawl away and nothing will happen.

It is time more people took action to stop the bullying.

Cailleach1 · 19/07/2021 15:46

@Moonwatcher1234

Nonsense in the sense it’s my personal view that cancel culture goes too far…not nonsense in the sense I don’t believe it exists! For what it’s worth, I agree largely with the concerns about TWAW movement…I’m a woman so of course I worry about where it’s heading. But, I am a Muslim and have found Frances Barbers views and commets on Muslims unpalatable and unpleasant for a while. I am allowed to express that. That’s all.
That is not what the TRA was trying to get her sacked for though. That wasn't what the TRA thought was wrong. The TRA wanted her sacked for the greatest crime of saying that sex is immutable and that men are not women.

As a great crowd of TRA's/MRA's are also doing to other women and using that to bully and intimidate many women. It is almost like they really do know what a woman is, despite trying to get a woman sacked for knowing what she herself is.

RedDogsBeg · 19/07/2021 15:46

If you are cheering her on here it's worth taking a step back and thinking about whether you think treating people this unkindly is okay

So, by your logic Jay trying to get Frances Barber sacked is not unkind, her responding to that threat is unkind, seriously? and I repeat that unlike Jay Frances Barber has not called for him to lose his job yet you think she is treating him unkindly?

I despair at how low some will go to always paint women as the baddies in every scenario, to insist women be kind to men even when they are trying to destroy their very livelihood, it's no surprise the patriarchy is so entrenched.

FloralBunting · 19/07/2021 15:50

Absolutely. We're all so bloody used to people backing away from the zealots, cowed and compliant we're all a bit shocked when someone comes out swinging and tells them to shut up and sit down.

It's nonsense. It should be the normal response. Zealots need to be told they can't can't away with it. You learn to live in a world where other people have different opinions, and you make your case with civility. If you want to play dirty and go for someone's livelihood, family or safety, then you should expect at the very least a sound verbal warning. Good grief.

Cailleach1 · 19/07/2021 15:50

Also, wouldn't agree on that remark about Muslims either. That is distinct from what is happening to women, though. I can also believe that we have to stand up to the hatred that is being heaped on women. Women don't have to be sacrificed for any other group, and won't be manipulated to do so. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Cailleach1 · 19/07/2021 15:52

Also, half of Muslims are women.

Appeals to female socialisation tend to get short shrift here.
Cailleach1 · 19/07/2021 15:57

So, standing up against women being bullied and discriminated against for our knowledge of who we are is 'unkind'. To who? Puffed up, self-important males and their cronies who are delighted about the way they can publicly heap misogyny on women and can pretend this represents their 'goodness'?

LastSummerHere · 19/07/2021 15:58

Islamophobic.🙄 if that taxi driver had dared talk to me like that I would have said far worse about the POS. And as a Christian, every day I see and hear people disrespect my faith...they even use our dear Lord's name as a swear word ffs, but do we slate everyone's character as a result of this? No. I'm secure in my faith and don't feel the need to compel others to show respect to something they don't believe in. I think Frances is fantastic and love how she speaks her mind. She's worth a million of every stupid little pathetic man who tries to shit on her.
