Frances Barber Under Attack From TRAs

Looks like they are unhappy with her because she supports JK Rowling. Some little arsehole has contacted the theatre she is currently working at, to try and get her sacked.

She is not having it. Another strong, formidable woman.

In the absence of further evidence, I'm assuming he's calling her a racist because people who call women transphobes tend to through racist in there for good measure.

Megasausagehead · 19/07/2021 07:04

In the comments there was a screenshot of her responding to someone complaining about islamaphobia. She said something like "stop killing people then"

OldTurtleNewShell · 19/07/2021 07:26

Funny thing. I've got tickets to see Hamlet in August. I saw yesterday that she'd be joining the cast and was thrilled. I've seen her on stage before and she was dynamite. Her and Ian McKellen? 😍
For some reason, it didn't occur to me that TRAs would try get her removed even though I know she's firmly pro-women.
What a bunch of little shits. I hope the theatre stays firm.

Ah right 😬 I missed that.

@arcof

Why is he calling her racist, out of interest? (Genuine question).
The only thing I can think of is that she called the SNP racist. She has has had so much abuse like this from people who see her as a 'centrist'. She was very critical of Jeremy Corbyn.
BraveBananaBadge · 19/07/2021 08:25

More power to Frances. This is bound to be a headache for the theatre (a particularly captured sector), and we've seen people turn on eg James Dreyfus for similar so we can't expect much so am watching this with a sense of dread. However Frances herself is already replacing Steven Berkoff so to send her packing would be another big setback for the production. As PPs have said her politics are hardly a secret.

If this blows up Ian McKellen will be dragged in further and the whole (already troubled) production will see its headlines, reviews and promos not being about the work but about fecking alleged transphobia again.

I haven't looked at theatre Twitter yet but they're bound to be calling for her head. At least she can look after herself and knows what she's getting into.

Toffeebutterpopcorn · 19/07/2021 08:28

I’ve not seen a peep out of Barclays. But they they did a video a little while back telling us all how to think/speak didn’t they, so I guess the PR/media is being handled by such people...

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 19/07/2021 08:30

Some DARVO peddling MRA accusing her of harassing her accuser now. Christ they’re laughable.

Megasausagehead · 19/07/2021 08:37

This was the post I think she is being called racist for. If she wrote it of course.

Frances Barber is not marvellous…look up her nasty comments on Muslims. Whilst you may agree with her stance on this issue, it’s off putting that people are happy to laud individuals who are so unpleasant.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 19/07/2021 08:57

If I had an account at Barclays, I would now close it. (Actually closed it about 20 years ago because their banking advisor was a misogynistic idiot).

The end game is everyone getting cancelled. Every single one of us has thoughts that are considered unpalatable to someone. We are becoming polarised and unforgiving. It reminds me of Game of Thrones where Cersei gets whipped as she walks the streets atoning for her sins. If you honestly want us to go back to witch burning and public flogging we’re on the right track.

And referred to a “sharia taxi driver” - I assume she meant Muslim. Seriously, she is vile and it’s upsetting that people are willing to overlook this behaviour from her because they agree with her in the TWAW issue. Surely better and more deserving allies exist.
WhereYouLeftIt · 19/07/2021 09:06

@Moonwatcher1234, you appear to be on the event horizon of a purity spiral.

Moonwatcher1234 · 19/07/2021 09:06

Freebritnee - no most decent people wouldn’t hold that attitude let alone tweet it on a public form. Please don’t equate it to the cancel culture nonsense (and I haven’t said she should be cancelled btw) but it’s something to be aware of. It is objectively a horrible thing she tweeted.

Moonwatcher1234 · 19/07/2021 09:08
@Moonwatcher1234, you appear to be on the event horizon of a purity spiral.
Thank you. And your thoughts on her comments?

FreeBritnee · 19/07/2021 09:09

How can you call ‘cancel culture’ nonsense when the thread is about exactly that subject as a TRA is trying to get another person sacked from their job.

Megasausagehead · 19/07/2021 09:12

She has clearly been racist. I cannot support that personally.

Clymene · 19/07/2021 09:12

@Moonwatcher1234 - if you're finding this thread upsetting, may I gently suggest you go and read the Guardian or something?

Do I always agree with Barber? No. Do I think she deserves to have the hate of Twittersphere rain down on her head? Also no.

In the real world, sometimes adults can have different opinions.

Sophoclesthefox · 19/07/2021 09:14

So you are saying that the correct response to her making comments on Twitter should be to lose her job because someone decided to shitstir, moonwatcher?

I don’t agree with or endorse those comments, but I don’t want to live in a world where women (and it’s almost always women) get followed round the internet by grasses who try to get them sacked.

Do you? Would your social media withstand such scrutiny?

Moonwatcher1234 · 19/07/2021 09:15

Nonsense in the sense it’s my personal view that cancel culture goes too far…not nonsense in the sense I don’t believe it exists! For what it’s worth, I agree largely with the concerns about TWAW movement…I’m a woman so of course I worry about where it’s heading. But, I am a Muslim and have found Frances Barbers views and commets on Muslims unpalatable and unpleasant for a while. I am allowed to express that. That’s all.

Clymene · 19/07/2021 09:16

Yes you are. Do you think she deserves to never work again because of that?

No, I never said that and don’t believe she should Lose her job! For what it’s worth, I agree with her stance on this! The comments about her being marvellous and fab etc are off putting though and that’s what I am talking about.
InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 19/07/2021 09:20

You know, it's interesting. This witchfinder working for Barclays reminded me of this: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4284661-And-Barclays-dont-give-a-stuff-either

Seems to be that there's a very direct-looking line between Barclays, as a corporation, bullying customers by telling them what to think and say, and Barclays employees taking that bullying attitude out into the rest of the world.

This is so true, nobody is without bias. The purity spiral thing is actually spot on. It's becoming ridiculous. The problem is that there seems to be no proportionality. These days people with unpopular opinions are lined up against the same firing wall as people who have committed actual crimes. The overreach from the twitterati on a witch hunt is ridiculous.

Someone making a remark you deem unpleasant or offensive may be upsetting or unpalatable, but it does not mean they should be hounded from their job and have their livelihood taken away. By that measure most of us would be out of a job.
