Frances Barber Under Attack From TRAs

ScreamingMeMe · 18/07/2021 23:02

Looks like they are unhappy with her because she supports JK Rowling. Some little arsehole has contacted the theatre she is currently working at, to try and get her sacked.

She is not having it. Another strong, formidable woman.

Ok, fair enough.

I get very frustrated at the whole “you must take a side!” and the public shaming of women for holding unacceptable views. Nobody is all good or all bad, and it’s perfectly possible to say “I like this thing she said, but I completely disagree with this other thing”, and to continue to admire someone who has said stuff you disagree with. I hate to feed into the narrative of denunciation.

Moonwatcher1234 · 19/07/2021 09:22

Clemente - I don’t know why you are trying to put words in my mouth. I have not said I would like to see her sacked etc. I have said she is an unpleasant individual and I don’t get the love being heaped upon her. That is all. I’m allowed to say that and hold an opinion on her based on things she has put up in a public forum. Don’t agree with cancelling people but equally expect people to form a view on you if you tweet such horrible things. Anyway, I’m off now because, well, I have things to do.

FreeBritnee · 19/07/2021 09:30

@Moonwatcher1234

Nonsense in the sense it’s my personal view that cancel culture goes too far…not nonsense in the sense I don’t believe it exists! For what it’s worth, I agree largely with the concerns about TWAW movement…I’m a woman so of course I worry about where it’s heading. But, I am a Muslim and have found Frances Barbers views and commets on Muslims unpalatable and unpleasant for a while. I am allowed to express that. That’s all.
You are absolutely allowed to express that unless of course someone online decides that’s a view that doesn’t align with the currently accepted thinking and you get cancelled and sacked from your job.
DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 19/07/2021 09:31

And referred to a “sharia taxi driver” - I assume she meant Muslim
I assume she meant the completely unacceptable and outdated misogynistic views expressed by that particular Uber driver when he told her ‘women should not be out at night’ and that she was ‘disgustingly dressed’ (she was wearing a black polo neck and floor length skirt). Your opinion on Frances Barber may well be correct and relevant, but at least try to put comments in context or else you start to look disingenuous. Nobody likes a sealion.

@InspiralCoalescenceRingdown

You know, it's interesting. This witchfinder working for Barclays reminded me of this: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4284661-And-Barclays-dont-give-a-stuff-either

Seems to be that there's a very direct-looking line between Barclays, as a corporation, bullying customers by telling them what to think and say, and Barclays employees taking that bullying attitude out into the rest of the world.

I wonder if he's looking to collect Stonewall points for doing this? Is this something that they would document and put forward in their internal 'ally' tallying, and put in a report to Stonewall for their Champions or Workplace Equality Index scheme?
Megasausagehead · 19/07/2021 09:32

Personally I am failing to see what she has done that is so saintly.

Yes she supported JKR. cool.

I don't believe that she should be sacked for that at all.

Blatant islamaphobia however is indicative of how she chooses to behave. It isnt a belief, or centering women. It is nasty speech against a protected group and should rightfully be called out.

There are better horses to back.

Did you mean me? My name is Clymene.

I didn't 'put words in your mouth'. I asked you a question Confused

FreeBritnee · 19/07/2021 09:41

I’m not completely sure anyone is ‘backing’ any celebrity on here. It’s not a horse race. I suspect there’s some gratitude displayed when someone in the media spotlight says something that no one else dares vocalise that aligns with your own thoughts. That’s human nature.

I’m also not convinced about the Islamaphobia claim. I think it’s very common to dislike attributes without condemning the whole. Perhaps she doesn’t like the misogyny that goes along with many religious and cultural practices. Many don’t. She made the mistake of writing that down.

NotBadConsidering · 19/07/2021 09:41

I love her response and support her with this issue. My opinion on her is that she is right on this issue, regardless of anything else.

No one is 100% right or wrong on everything. No one is perfect, no one is above reproach, no one is exempt from praise.

Abhannmor · 19/07/2021 09:51

I don't want this jerk to lose his boring job either. That would put us on the level of the bullies. Great to see someone fighting back though.Smile

ScreamingMeMe · 19/07/2021 09:56

Yes, same, don't want him to be fired. Neither of them should be ffs.

I admire Frances for telling this jerk where to go. I wasn't aware of the actual tweets at the time and I certainly do not condone them. I am so used to TRAs lying and exaggerating!

I note that the tweet screenshot is from 2017 - has she made any more recent comments of this nature?

Quite a lot of Bunbury happening!

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

I stand with Frances Barber. And JK Rowling. And Maya.

No woman should lose her job because she believes sex matters.

Oh no I don't either. I want him to apologise for libelling Barber.

His LinkedIn is hilarious. He sounds like he's virtually running Barclays and he's only five years out of university.

Megasausagehead · 19/07/2021 09:57

I have no idea, no intention of trolling her.

She needs to protect herself.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 19/07/2021 10:01

Actually, I don’t mind if this guy loses his job. He started it. And he clearly wanted her to lose her job. Don’t dish out what you can’t take.

He is the one who started harassing her for a legally protected belief. He is the one who has done wrong. She is just responding rather than lying down, rolling over and playing dead.

Jay Mann has brought the company he works for into disrepute. If Barclays have his actions covered in their social media policy, then he deserves to lose his job.

Meh, Jay set the rules with this one. I hate cancel culture, but Jay has decided that people should be sacked if they have views others disagree with. He is only being tackled with the very values he lives by.

Im sick of this shit and I hope Francis sues him.

LoislovesStewie · 19/07/2021 10:14

@Megasausagehead

She has clearly been racist. I cannot support that personally.
I don't see that disliking Islam is racist, as anyone from any ethnicity can be Muslim, FWIW I can't stand any religion;they are all misogynistic.
ScreamingMeMe · 19/07/2021 10:15

(I'm not saying it's ok because it was in the past. I'm wondering if her views changed or of she ever apologised or anything.)

FloralBunting · 19/07/2021 10:23

I think the tweet about 'stop killing us' was ill judged, as many tweets are. I also think the people who will focus on it (not meaning those on this thread, mind, who have raised reasonable thoughts in response) don't give a flying fuck about Muslims and probably wouldn't touch the tweets by the unpleasant person with a sissy Muslim fetish who posts openly about it on Twitter.

Which tells me all I need to know about their genuine concern about Barber's unpleasantness. I'm sure she's a completely terrifying firecracker. I'm no shrinking violet, and I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of her. Jay picked the wrong woman to play patriarchy chicken with.

You clearly haven’t read the tweet in question. It’s not some moral or intellectual criticism. It’s a downright offensive and nasty thing to say.
BlueBlazerBlack · 19/07/2021 10:37

I haven't read the alleged 'islamophobic' tweets.

I'm not sure why they are being brought up though, when it's obvious that the banker wasn't trying to cancel her for Islamophobia, was he?

Megasausagehead · 19/07/2021 10:40

No it wasn't. He is vile and deserves everything that she will send his way. Everything.

But I personally wouldn't want to be associated with her comments in respect of Islam. So wouldn't openly laud her.

You can decide to do you.

FreeBritnee · 19/07/2021 10:41

Everything deserves to be read within the context of the discussion. If you can link me to the full tweet and associated replies I’ll happily give you my thoughts.

BlueBlazerBlack · 19/07/2021 10:42

You could argue that a movement that seeks to remove sex segregation of communal changing rooms in leisure centres (for example) is deeply islamophobic, because Muslim women in particular feel very uncomfortable about sharing such spaces where they may be in a state of undress with intact biological men Confused

I remember a time when leisure centres would hold women-only sessions to enable women from minorities, who felt uncomfortable exercising with men, to use such facilities
