Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Mumsnet is hiving off sex/gender issues into a sub-forum

It sounds like it's happening:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/4267223-Any-chance-of-a-review-of-the-FWR-moderation-rules-in-light-of-Maya-Forstaters-success-in-court-please

Many of us have explained how much we didn't want this and how unworkable it will be, but Mumsnet won't listen.

I honestly feel betrayed, and am just waiting for final confirmation then will delete my account.

Et tu, Justine?

I don't undertsand why people get so het up about the structure of the different topics on here. I'm pretty sure must people just click through to whatever threads are on trending or active threads and completely ignore the topic names.

JoodyBlue · 15/06/2021 18:32

I quite like Feminism - Not the Fun Kind! As a title. That would go a long way :)

Anyhoo, it is still important that women's voices come and talk here. A mainstream forum in which women can chat about all issues affecting women is more vital now than ever. @YourSexNotGenderIsOnFire don't go :(

We can't control everything, so keep working within the boundaries.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/06/2021 18:32

It's possibly because someone could report your thread and ask to have it moved.
Or my own particular confusion which is how you talk about feminism without talking about sex and gendered roles.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 15/06/2021 18:32

@Redapplewreath

To quote one email we received this morning, ‘There is definitely a sense that Feminism Chat is only a place to discuss gender critical feminism. Any posts which question GCism get flooded with hundreds of hostile responses. Which might be more fair if MN was an explicitly GC site, but it portrays itself as a space for all feminism.’

You are being carpet bombed with such emails intentionally and purposefully to hive unwanted women's voices into a dark cupboard (and from there hopefully ditch them together.) You're being played like fiddles. Rather like the occasional threads that appear playing the 'gosh I'm a feminist with no voice becuase you lot want to talk about feminism won't ignore all the elephants', who promptly proves they have no posting history, joined MN about five minutes ago, have read no threads on the board at all, do not participate in around the 50% (do check, TRA rulers of MN keep helpful logs on Twitter of this as part of their campaign against removing women's legal rights) of threads that are not sex/trans ideology related at all, nor in any of the feminist issues anywhere else all over MN. They rarely continue to post beyond the initial one and it's blatantly about creating wanted evidence.

These people will not generate you traffic or income once they have their way. They will not use the resource provided. They're here to break, not build

All of this plus it won’t be enough because as we know nothing ever is. They’ll be back with another campaign to get the topic shut down in another way
Vanishun · 15/06/2021 18:33

Redapplewreath, did you mean to post that on the other thread?

Hawkins001 · 15/06/2021 18:35

@YourSexNotGenderIsOnFire

You can stay if you like but I'm done.
So to help me understand, because the categories are changing from 5 to 2 your leaving , even though the information will still be there ?

Same here, I usually click on active threads rather than the categories, because with the active s I know. They are live threads rather than ones from eons ago.
Pumperthepumper · 15/06/2021 18:37

I don’t see what the big deal is, do you want the name ‘feminism’ in it?

DialSquare · 15/06/2021 18:37

Feminism- The Cunty Kind!

I'm with Floisme and will see how it all plays out. I suspect that Feminism Chat will become full of tumbleweed and Sex and Gender will become Feminism Chat,

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/06/2021 18:45

It reminds me of when they tried to make a theory section that is always quiet

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 15/06/2021 18:50

I don’t like it, it sounds like they are trying to downgrade it but I suspect however they label it it will become the main feminist board.

YourSexNotGenderIsOnFire · 15/06/2021 18:51

Try looking at any of the current sub-topics and see how quiet they are. Mumsnet may say that they're not trying to hide us in a corner, but that's definitely what it feels like.

And more importantly it's Mumsnet prioritising the views of people who don't use Feminism chat from those who do. Gender ideology is an existential threat to feminism, but now we'll be forbidden from discussing it on the main board.

It's a slap in the face and I don't want to give Mumsnet any more of my custom if they won't listen to the vast majority of FWR users who don't want this.

And we'll keep on talking and emailing and crowdfunding.

Redapplewreath · 15/06/2021 18:58

Feminism. Where women wanting legal rights are just a weird niche thing kept out of sight over there away from the naice girls.

I've seen everything now.

Pumperthepumper · 15/06/2021 18:59

It’ll be the busiest board though. People post about sex and gender all the time.

NecessaryScene · 15/06/2021 19:04

Well, the problem won't be sex/gender being quiet. The problem will be the other board being quiet.

Sex/gender is what people are currently wanting to talk about...

We'll go from non-trans topics being "drowned out" to being in a not-so-high-traffic board. Could be better, could be worse.

Signalbox · 15/06/2021 19:06

This sounds likely. I mean what are the feminist issues that don't, in some way, relate to sex or gender?

User52739 · 15/06/2021 19:10

Woohoo 🥳 means the feminism board might finally have some actual feminism on it for once!

Sophoclesthefox · 15/06/2021 19:10

I think the conversation will continue anyway.

I can’t honestly imagine what the topics will be in feminism that don’t relate to women’s sex based rights, needs and issues, but I’m sensing that as a big ol’ feminist of the non fun kind, I’m not the target market...If there’s a big pent up outpouring of feminism hitherto inhibited by other feminists not being kind enough, then great. Can’t wait. Item one on the list: what is female socialisation? 😬

What I won’t be impressed by is women being penalised or maliciously reported if we post on the “wrong” board. I’m a bit worried about that, as I personally don’t think you can take sex out of feminism, so I don’t know how it will work. I will just have to keep posting as I always have, and hope for the best.

I don’t get this. Don’t you see protection women’s rights as feminism? What type of thing are you excited to talk about instead

Please do tell us which of the 23/50 threads identified by the twitter bot on this board is not about ‘feminism’?
Floisme · 15/06/2021 19:16

There will certainly be a lot riding on these previously marginalised feminists now that MNHQ has gone to the trouble of reorganising the board especially for them. I will keep an open mind but it's going to be interesting to watch.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/06/2021 19:16

Perhaps you could explain why recent posts which were clearly fake/trolling/goady & were reported as such to MNHQ, as per MN rules, were left up & are now apparently being used to 'prove' the allegation that posts which question GCism get flooded with hundreds of hostile responses?

One such post introduced the topic of gender issues & then complained that too many posts are about gender issues! Is MN complicit in all this, or are you being played like a violin?

Signalbox · 15/06/2021 19:20

I'm intrigued to know what are the feminist issues that don't relate, in some way, to sex or gender?

TwistedEyeOfHorus · 15/06/2021 19:20

I think the idea of calling the new space 'Feminism: Not the Fun Kind' would be good. So people don't think it's not feminist.

And Mumsnet are making an error. I can't think of any part of Feminism that isn't completely bound up.with a person's sex or gender or the interplay between them.
