I may be wrong but someone has pointed out it's originally a PN piece.
An NY USA people feel free to correct me!
My understanding is that.
USA do not have the same sort of global equalities laws that we have.
In some/ many (?) states employers can sack you if they find out you're gay/ lesbian, housing can be denied etc etc.
So the fight for equality/ anti discrimination laws for gay and lesbian people is ongoing.
The T has been bundled in with this.
Note that one of the quotes refers to LGBT+ not just T. (As an aside, aren't PN interested in the LGB any more? Given that above?).
They also have a very strong and very vocal and popular right/ religious contingent including in legislation etc who oppose LGBT+++ anyone who doesn't fit the het nuclear family 50s stereotype family set up. Also they oppose abortion, and are constantly working to remove rights etc. There's also the more extreme who are hardly low in number- the racists, the people armed to the teeth, the ones who stormed the white House etc.
So the demarkation is a massive gap not a small line. And there's ? sod all middle ground.
As such it's s totally different context etc.
In a fight like that, it's a bit all it nothing. Even more polarised than here.
I don't doubt that loads of democrats are all for self ID etc as so many politicians and etc of all sides are here.
So I wouldn't expect anything else. It would muddy the waters and lead to infighting and weaken the stance that women gay people etc matter.
If that's wonky I would be keen to hear what's not right- I don't know much about USA and it's huge- but that's my understanding and thoughts.
