www.scotsman.com/news/people/lgbt-charities-launch-appeal-against-charity-commission-over-controversial-groups-status-3257923

"In April, the LGB Alliance was made a charity after the commission decided the group benefitted the public through its educational and awareness-raising activities about discrimination based on sexual orientation."

"On Tuesday, transgender children’s charity Mermaids launched an appeal against the decision at the first tier tribunal, supported by other charities and groups including Stonewall, Gendered Intelligence, and the Good Law Project."

Just made BBC news they definitely said Mermaids and Stonewall were involved

jellybeansforbreakfast · 02/06/2021 12:49

Ask straight people. I am straight

Society saw gay and trans people as interchangeable until quite recently. We both defy gender stereotypes - so we were regarded as part of the same group for decades. Nope! As soon as people know what 'trans' actually is, undertsands the terminology, society does not see them as the same at all.

We fought alongside each other for a common goal of acceptance of gender non-conformity. We continue to fight alongside each other. Which 'we'?

Women and gay people have done this for decades, over a century. Being trans is about embracing gender conformity, rejecting sex based reality and 'living as' the gender stereotypes of the opposite sex.

RedDogsBeg · 02/06/2021 12:50

It's not up to straight people to decide.

It's not up to TW or men to decide what a woman is.

PronounssheRa · 02/06/2021 12:51

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

I don't think Stonewall is involved, which makes the whole thing even stranger. LGBA does have an overlap with Stonewall, but had no overlap at all with solely trans charities. All this is going to do is to highlight that there is a conflict between the LGB and the T, a conflict that all the trans charities have been saying doesnt exist.
How odd, I was sure when I read the crowdfunder this morning Stonewall were named, that seems to have gone now.

Make your mind up.

yeahbutnaw · 02/06/2021 12:51

@Shedbuilder

No we don't. You don't speak for all LGB people, you speak for a tiny minority that's getting smaller by the day. That's why Stonewall and the consortium and Mermaids are so determined to do whatever they can to shut LGB Alliance up. If all LGB people willingly support transpeople, why would anyone be running scared?

The next thing you'll be telling us is that Storme DeLarverie was trans. She wasn't, she was a butch lesbian.

Receipts?

Please do show some evidence of your assertion that a "tiny minority" of LGB people support trans rights.

Literally any evidence will do.

It certainly seems that this action can be seen as demeaning and denigrating. And completely ignores that LGB Alliance has trans supporters. Surely it cannot be seen as anything other than as malicious as it seems

Reminds me of a great GIF of a boxer taking a swing and accidentally punching himself in the face.

I hope this spectacularly blows up in their childish little faces 🍿

sanluca · 02/06/2021 12:53

In the 70s transgender people were often same sex attracted and after transitioning opposite sex attracted. Hence the GRA so that transwomen could marry another male human.

Now the 'modern' transwoman is hetero and after transitioning want to be seen as gay. Which is not true and leads to the claims of 'genital preferences' when gay people don't want to date them.

This is why sexual orientation and gender identity need to be separated. Just as protections based on female sex, protections based on same sex attraction become meaningless if sex means male or female and sexual attraction means gay or straight.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 02/06/2021 12:53

It's not up to straight people to decide

Oh the irony.

It's also not up to males to redefine what female means. Or for SW to redefine the very meaning of sexual orientation to same 'gender' attracted.

Funny how conflation of terms is overlooked when it suits the narrative.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/06/2021 12:53

How odd, I was sure when I read the crowdfunder this morning Stonewall were named, that seems to have gone now.

That is very interesting. So Stonewall were either involved, or had been assumed they would be involved, and have now made it clear that they are not. I wonder why that would be?

yeahbutnaw · 02/06/2021 12:53

Society saw us as the same for decades.

And most trans people are LGB.

Hence, our struggles are intertwined and we have similar needs.

Perhaps, as a straight person, it would benefit you to listen to LGBT people on things that they likely have more experience and knowledge about than you. Rather than your current focus on proving LGBT people wrong.

sanluca · 02/06/2021 12:53

Sorry, the 'opposite sex' should have been in quotes as nobody is changing their sex.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 02/06/2021 12:54

Because supporting rights for LGB people is so shocking and controversial. Go ahead, trans lobby, advertise your real agenda loud and clear.

sanluca · 02/06/2021 12:54

It would benefit you to listen to LGBT people on things that they likely have more experience and knowledge about than you

So take your own advice and listen to LGBA.

Datun · 02/06/2021 12:55

I wonder if it was the super straight movement that put the wind up them. All those tens of thousands of men and women identifying as gay and lesbian, based on sex.

Datun · 02/06/2021 12:57

And most trans people are LGB.

You can't even define your terms. What's a lesbian?

jellybeansforbreakfast · 02/06/2021 12:57

@yeahbutnaw consistency my dear. Tis required if you wish your argument to carry any weight.

thepuredrop · 02/06/2021 12:57

Can someone tweet this to Maugham?

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 02/06/2021 12:58

Trans people have fought for gay acceptance

Oh, really? Show your workings.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 02/06/2021 13:00

Trans people have fought for gay acceptance. We're not going to abandon them now.

So why are you opposing the LGB Alliance, Yeahbutnaw? Why not welcome another group that supports gay rights? You don't have to have identical policies and strategies.

No animal-lover says the Canine Defence League should disband and support only the RSPCA. No environmentalist objects to Greenpeace covering some of the same territory as Friends of the Earth. Genuine supporters of a cause don't try to get other supporters banned as a hate group!

I am listening to LGB people, the real question is are you? Or do you, as all the evidence suggests, just ignore those who disagree with you or do not hold the same opinion as you and your self selecting bubble?

Equally perhaps you could listen to women who have for more experience, knowledge and understanding of what a woman is and what it means to be a woman than any man or TW will ever have.

yeahbutnaw · 02/06/2021 13:01

I have. I have also listened to other LGB people.

The vast majority do not share LGB alliance's beliefs. And the vast majority of LGB Alliance's supporters are straight (case in point).
