www.scotsman.com/news/people/lgbt-charities-launch-appeal-against-charity-commission-over-controversial-groups-status-3257923

"In April, the LGB Alliance was made a charity after the commission decided the group benefitted the public through its educational and awareness-raising activities about discrimination based on sexual orientation."

"On Tuesday, transgender children’s charity Mermaids launched an appeal against the decision at the first tier tribunal, supported by other charities and groups including Stonewall, Gendered Intelligence, and the Good Law Project."

Op Do Mermaids have a case? If theirs is about donations, it doesn't make sense. Lots of Charities have a similar theme but funding still flows. Is it more about discrediting a charity that does not include the T and bringing a case, no matter how tenuous is better than nothing. I suspect they would have like to bring it on discrimination grounds but I suspect there was no case

'fellow champion of unfashionable causes, Peter Tatchell'

That's an interesting insight.

I'd argue that 'lefty, Remainer, trans rights supporter' is a very trendy set of labels.

I'd argue that "consistently argues for the lowering of the age of consent, and has written a number of times about how 'sex' - ie rape, but he doesn't call it that - between nine year olds and adults can bring 'great joy' to for the child" is also fairly trendy, amongst a certain set, but I wouldn't want them weighing in on my side.

Just bumping as LGBA need more donations. In a now familiar tactic Mermaids are massively driving up costs by introducing huge amounts of paperwork and having 3 witnesses Hmm.

Plasmodesmata · 09/07/2022 10:13

On a sort of related note the Fox Killer has made a comment on the Tory leadership race.

I admit that I'd lost track that this is ongoing.

My next bit of money is going to Rachel Meade but after that it will be LGBA.

Worth remembering that if you're an Amazon user you can set your prime account to their charity Amazon Smile and select the LGB Alliance as your selected charity - they then get a small donation every time you purchase something - as long as you do it via the smile landing page.

Yes, I've done this but was caught out by not typing in smile.amazon for several months. My laptop automatically remembers it now, but I was really cross with myself for not realising sooner and assuming my purchases were being registered for LGBA.

Thanks for the reminder, have just donated. They have a long way to go to their target.

Surely, surely following the Forstater case this action now has no legs at all.

The LGBA are GC. GC views are not only WORIADS, but surely they have surely never expressed such opinions in a way deemed inappropriate.

With Stephanie Davies Arai being awarded the British Empire Medal for her campaigning work that is based on the same belief, hasn't the very highest establishment legitimised those beliefs also?

In fact, surely condemning them as a hate group etc is discrimination against their protected GC beliefs and it is the ones bringing this action who are unlawful?

What grounds are they going to try to argue in court that haven't already been tested?

KatVonlabonk · 09/07/2022 12:22

Mermaids and stonewall care more about silencing those with different opinions than literally anything else.

SallyLockheart · 09/07/2022 12:26

Artichokeleaves · 09/07/2022 12:39

Thank you, have just donated. My right to be homosexual is absolutely something I'm willing to stand up for, and no one else but the LGBA is going to do it.

This new strategy of trying to punish heretics by escalating the costs and hoping to bankrupt them is getting to be a tediously common one, isn't it? Probably about time this began to be recognised as a malicious act and dealt with as such in sorting out costs at the end.

Artichokeleaves · 09/07/2022 12:55

Or that in these David and Goliath situations where a rich, government funded organisation is bumping up costs against a disproportionately resourced opponent they should need to fund the other side too to be able to respond.

Even if you search for

Appeal “LGB Alliance’s” charity status

and read it, you're left none the wiser as to the actual grounds of the case being brought by Mermaids et al. (the updates don't clarify matters).

It's not helped, of course, by the parties' known tendencies to be economical with the actualités as it used to be known. I still savour JM announcing that tremendous win earlier this year only to downgrade it a loss on deeply technical issues.

I am aghast, however, at JM affecting to deplore the tactic of rising costs closing down access to the courts given the whiff of this in re: GLP's support for Mermaids v LGB Alliance.

Bumping to help support the LGBA in their gardening. It is a huge amount they need to raise now:

"Mermaids has ensured that the hearing is much longer than we had hoped by submitting a very large volume of paperwork and by presenting three witnesses, forcing us to provide an effective rebuttal.

Given the extent of witness and documentary evidence we have been required to prepare, we have added Karon Monaghan QC and a junior barrister to our legal team.

The significantly longer hearing, and the need to add a QC, has increased our costs significantly and so we are forced to raise our crowdfunding target to £215,000.

This is a vast sum of money.

But this case is existential to us, and to the rights of people with same-sex sexual orientation to organise in our own interests.

Mermaids is a well-funded organisation with many employees. We have one part-time member of staff and rely on small individual donations to do our work. So as well as presenting us with financial difficulties, this case has meant our volunteers, who are passionate about working to support LGB people, have instead been forced to spend months on preparing our defence.

We want you to know that we did not seek this fight but we will not hide from it. So please help us if you can."

the key phrase to find the garden is: Defend LGB Alliance's Charity Status

I've just seen Good Law Project's Spreadsheet of Shame. It's quite the list of failed actions at normal for litigation but otherwise eye-watering costs.

Just found, via that link, that I've been added to some nonentity's "Nazis" list.

I am incredibly proud.
