Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Kathleen Stock OBE: Trans Women Aren't Women : A discussion

It's a view held by most people, so why has it become so controversial to state that trans women aren't women? On this episode of "So What You're Saying Is..." (#SWYI) we are joined by Prof. Kathleen Stock OBE, professor of philosophy at the University of Sussex and author of the best-selling book: "Material Girls: Why Reality Matters for Feminism".

Prof. Stock discusses the issues of sex vs. gender and gender identity, and explains how trans activists, arguing that gender is psychological not physical, now claim that womanhood & manhood are genders in a social, rather than biological, sense.

She discusses the possible motives for Stonewall's decision to become so actively involved in trans rights, as well as the vilification of its outspoken critics such as Germaine Greer and Julie Bindell. Prof. Stock has herself been the target of campaigns to silence, cancel and no platform.

Prof. Stock also discusses the negative impact the more extreme trans rights positions are having on women (changing rooms, public toilets, prisons etc.) as well as the young, and gays & lesbians.

This is an excellent video - short, sweet and to the point. 30 mins of common sense and eloquence.

It’s even more tangled than that though, isn’t it? Trans activists argue that ‘gender’ actually is physiological (which is what annoys those of us who thought we’d left notions about ‘lady brains’ behind decades ago). In fact, they argue that sex is socially constructed! I remember a couple of years ago, Evan Davies on PM interviewing a well known Canadian cyclist who got very heated about that and Evan was just baffled.

Thank you for posting this.
She is so measured and calm and factual.

Grin Grin Grin

How the hell did it get to this stage when this is what we're up against?

also your name sounds like a blender

hold on a second, what?

As always on FWR, but especially today, there have been dozens of great posts. However the above, despite the strong competition, is my favourite. If that doesn't convince us nothing will.

allmywhat · 23/05/2021 17:51

I interpreted the rest of it, I think: the grammar fails; the missing negative; the deep confusion about what views and haircuts looked like in 1977; and the warped TRA definition of harm (if a woman gets raped, it's a statistic, if a man gets his feelings hurt, it's a tragedy.) But I fell at the last hurdle on the blender thing.

Huh? Whilst I am sure that last part made sense to you when you typed it, it is utterly bereft of any sense from this end!

And you might want to have a look round this particular site, women's rights by women for women and all that! We aren't really impressed by the facile 'it won't hurt you hun!' postings of people who haven't taken the time to actually listen and to take information in - too busy broadcasting their words of unintelligible wisdom!

Yes that's a very compelling argument about this comically, in-depth and serious topic. Thank you for your contribution.
Caaarrrl · 23/05/2021 17:52

Complicated not comically

He's just going to leave that hanging, and we'll looking back in 10 years time, still wondering what that meant.

This could be the most psychologically damaging tactic yet attempted in this battle.

ValancyRedfern · 23/05/2021 17:56

Looking at all the names involved and desperately trying to find any connections to blenders...

No, don't do it. That's exactly what he wants you to do.

For god's sake think of anything but blenders.

Coffee percolators. Yes. Think about coffee percolators.

Mollyollydolly · 23/05/2021 18:00

Can't stop laughing today, makes a change. Going to watch sensible Ms Stock now.

OhDear2200 · 23/05/2021 18:02

Not a blender 😲😲😲

Coffee percolators. Yes. Think about coffee percolators.

But if you do that, a giant coffee percolator will stomp down your street and roar at you. Then stamp on you.

Like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters.

You just have to accept when you're beaten.

This is the other side of the debate Grin
Campervan69 · 23/05/2021 18:10

In 1977 I had a boy's haircut, I wanted to be a boy as I thought girls were boring. I only ever wore jeans outside of school uniform. Fortunately we lived in a different time, one where it was well known that people can't change sex. Once I went through female puberty, I stopped wanting to be a boy and wanted to snog them instead.

So I grew up to be a healthy adult female and had 3 fabulous children. The end.

Cleanandpress · 23/05/2021 18:12

In case anyone thinks I'm all about the smoothie...

Originating as an Olympic lift, the clean and press works no fewer than eight different muscle groups. The lower half of the movement strengthens your hips, glutes, and hamstrings, while the upper half of the movement targets your shoulders, chest, back, and arms.

PermanentTemporary · 23/05/2021 18:14

Dammit, I've forgotten how to name change, was going to go for PermanentTemporaryMagimix.

Should we move on to ask politicians their favourite blender instead of Biscuit now? Should we ask for a blender emoticon? It says everything about smashing the gender binary that they associate Mumsnet with kitchen equipment.

justawoman · 23/05/2021 18:16

I dunno, there were some pretty cool hairstyles around in 1977:

I didn’t have one, because I wasn’t born yet. I’ve always regretted missing out on the 70s

justawoman · 23/05/2021 18:17

Proof that you can find anything on eBay: if you’ve got a spare £100 you can get a vintage 1977 blender
