Drag and misogyny

Do you find drag as a concept misogynistic? It came up on Thinking Allowed where it was compared to blackface and I realised I'd never thought of it like that. I haven't actually any seen any either so I don't know much about it and wondered what other people thought.

Heh sorry rather pissed and went on one.

Gonna bop to flawless now.

If you look at no other videos (although all great tunes!) please look at the really short clip of Courtenay love giving s warning.

Now that is brave. And she also is saying it because she went.

I'm tired of this. All the music in the world. The songs sung by people who had nothing else. The songs sung that exposed part of what they were, and it was risky. The songs sung to protest against. Terrible situations all over the world all the time. Women singing about DV. men singing about racist violence. People everywhere through history singing for community and hope...

And you give us... That. It's a poor derivative pop track with a low budget poorly directed video with no message at all.

You must have some better music/ examples up your sleeve than that!

On a roll.

Subversive you say?

Jailed for 2 years in Russia.

More recent song.

Sorry drunk and bored.

Just remembered this classic!

NiceGerbil · 26/05/2021 02:39

Soooooooo

Tomorrow when I wake up (!!??) I look forward to finding some tracks that are. Well. Better than the one posted :/

Other than that- sorry for spamming- hope some of you find some new songs or remember some old songs that you love Smile

Cailleach1 · 26/05/2021 07:05

I enjoyed those clips NiceGerbil. I don't think I've seen the full videos for the songs before. Thank you for posting them.

The Bronski Beat video is so sad. Wonder when that Courtney Love warning clip was from?

Novelusername · 26/05/2021 14:08

I remember Courtney Love also speaking out about the things Marilyn Manson was doing to groupies on tour.

AssassinatedBeauty · 26/05/2021 14:18

Wow, the Courtney Love red carpet comment is from 2005, well before the Weinstein cases were publicised. Apparently she was permanently dropped by her agency as a result of saying it.

Just about sobered up!

Yes Courtenay was incredibly brave to say that.

Also means she was one of his victims obviously. Poor woman.

Yes Courtenay was brave to say that and what annoys me intensely is none of the high profile male or female actors who spoke out when the shit truly hit the fan backed her, supported her or stood up for her. There are several high profile male and female actors who knew what was going on at the time and had enough clout to speak out and yet they stayed silent and complicit and left Courtenay twisting in the wind.
NiceGerbil · 26/05/2021 22:11

They were probably all worried about their own careers.

Not that it's an excuse but it's understandable.

It's hard to do the right thing when it could mean never working in your industry again.

RedDogsBeg · 26/05/2021 22:17

I disagree NiceGerbil there were numerous actors who were very well established and were such a box office draw that there is no way they would never work again.

AssassinatedBeauty · 26/05/2021 22:32

It's a big risk though. Look at what happened to Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino just for rebuffing Weinstein, not even for going public. Peter Jackson confirmed that he had been told not to consider them for casting in the Lord of the Rings films, for example. They had their reputations damaged as unfounded allegations of them being "difficult" were spread around deliberately by Weinstein to discredit them.

NiceGerbil · 26/05/2021 22:32

I'm not saying they were right to do it!

Just that in loads of situations, all the time, people don't speak up. It's human nature.

RedDogsBeg · 26/05/2021 22:37

I agree for some it was self preservation but there were certainly plenty of others who were at little risk and once the shit hit the fan were all too keen to get involved, not just women but men also and some of the major male names too who were practically untouchable.

NiceGerbil · 26/05/2021 22:44

I dunno.

I always think of whoopie Goldberg and her 'rape rape' comment.

In the end we don't know them etc. It's done.

And in Hollywood things are wonky anyway. Men do awful stuff and it doesn't seem to damage their career. Or they go quiet for s couple of years and then are back.

It's shit really.

RedDogsBeg · 26/05/2021 22:46

It is shit NiceGerbil, a really fucked up industry and place.
