Priti Patel Doing Her Job

Flaxmeadow · 20/05/2021 12:53

Priti Patel, our Home Secretary, has been photographed attending the arrest of suspected people traffickers in London . Great you would think, the prosecution of organised crime, modern day slavery being rooted out and made an example of.

Yet ATM on SM there are masses of comments where Priti Patel is being described as a Nazi, Goebbels, evil bitch, ugly faced cow, Fascist, concentration camp guard, child murderer, and so on. She is even being criticised for her shoes, the type of footwear many South Asian heritage women wear. Also accused of masturbating (she has her hands in her pockets in the photo)

Most of these comments are from men. Why so much hate for a woman doing a tough job?

As for Priti Patel, she’s not pleasant or competent but a lot of the hate and vile comments she recieves are down to the fact that she is a woman

Conversely I think that some people let her off and don’t listen properly to criticism of her because they think it’s unduly fair, which I disagree with.

Or, they think they will come across as racist or anti feminist. I just googled Goebbels for his position in the Nazi party and I can see similarities. The Natzi's weren't just responsible for the atrocities during the war, it had been going on since about 1933. Carefully planned and orchestrated through policy. I don't trust her not to put two whole races into concontration camps tbh. I do think she's bitten off more than she can chew with this new police bill. You may think I'm talking rubbish, but I've seen this through campaigning and activism, the scary thing is we don't have the EU to fall back on anymore.

She isn’t just targeted because she is a women. She is an Asian woman who some feel should know her place

Then there is some who can’t seem to get their head around anyone who isn’t white and wealthy would vote Tory especially non white people

Her shoes well they are quite bling many of us Asians like a bit of bling

How The Guardian got away with their cartoon of her as a bull is absolutely disgusting and racist

CommanderBurnham · 27/05/2021 21:59

Agree that the shoes need a bit of artistic license.

Although I think it's great that an Asian woman has got to one of the highest positions, she's got a massive chip on her shoulder about something. Always coming across as offended by things, uses emotive language to get her point across.

However much I don't like her, like I don't like Trump, she's found a method which is highly effective. She gets what she wants. It's a horrible example to be setting.

Iggly · 28/05/2021 06:46

Conversely her being Asian and female doesn’t give her a free pass to be terrible at her job.

Which is what a lot of people are doing. “Oh don’t criticise Priti Patel, you’re only doing it because she’s asian/a woman”.

It’s bullshit. And terrifying.

OhWhyNot · 28/05/2021 08:01

No one is saying don’t criticise her work but do just that which many many do not

But the fact she is a women as all women in politics there is another level of criticism thrown her way

And then there is another level because she is Asian

It’s not acceptable yet The Guardian thought it was

Iggly · 28/05/2021 09:02

I will continue to criticise her and the rest of that cabinet, and won’t be told I’m doing so because she’s a woman/brown (insulting when I too am a brown woman!)

LadyWithLapdog · 28/05/2021 09:21

Come on, she’s just a nasty piece of work and not above criticism for what she does, not what or who she is. Though knowing her family’s immigrant background does add a level of wonder about how brutal she wants to be. Something going on there.

OhWhyNot · 28/05/2021 09:32

I haven’t disagreed about her work

But I do think there is a different level of criticism towards women in politics and she has also had to cal out racism form a leading paper which is perceived to be liberal. That is not on

Zinco · 28/05/2021 14:44

And as for so many people backing the death penalty - er does that make it right?? A million people can be wrong and all that.

No it doesn't make it "right" just because a lot of people agree with it; but accusations that something is "nastiness" are often likely to involve question-begging over the issue.

For example: GC feminists will be accused of "hate" and "bigotry" over their position on e.g. women's sports. So they will be accused of being motivated by hatred and just wanting to discriminate against a marginalised group.

Obviously GC feminists would claim that they have a reasonable position and are standing up for a good principle. Accusing them of "nastiness" then is probably assuming which side is correct in the debate, when it's highly controversial.

@LobotomisedIceSkatingFan

'Many South Asian women wear these type of shoes. Maybe that was part of the point she was making'

Absolute banger of an idea if so. Perhaps if the women had been Romanian, she could've turned up in this to put them at ease 🙄

If they are dancers yes. This isn't traditionally Romanian Grin

This thread made me think, I'm not a shoe person and don't know if I'd have noticed the gold shoes as haven't seen her wearing them.
But the media must be focussing on her feet. I remember seeing her walking briskly with BJ, in shoes she clearly couldn't wear.
But, we wouldn't have seen this unless the media focussed on it.
I remember thinking I bet she wishes she'd put flats on, but that's all.

I'm too bothered with her awful racism and bad politics to be bothered what she wears.

Iootraw1 · 28/05/2021 20:56

It’s seems misogyny has become cool these days with no stigma attached to it and those who do it are shameless in being open about it.
It’s the kind of repressed male hatred of women which just over spills on the internet mainly because they think they can.

Downriver · 28/05/2021 22:18

She is vile and deeply stupid. I cringe when I hear her being interviewed. Nasty bit of work. Nothing to do with her sex or race.

It’s not misogyny, don’t be ridiculous. It’s her venality and nastiness. See example, one of very many.

LadyWithLapdog · 29/05/2021 06:23

I could have linked to a similar article with Matt Hancock in it. But the thread isn’t about him.

Flaxmeadow · 04/06/2021 00:42

Get a grip of yourself for Gods sake. Do you have any idea how offensive this comment is to the victims of Goebbels and the Nazis
