Priti Patel Doing Her Job

Priti Patel, our Home Secretary, has been photographed attending the arrest of suspected people traffickers in London . Great you would think, the prosecution of organised crime, modern day slavery being rooted out and made an example of.

Yet ATM on SM there are masses of comments where Priti Patel is being described as a Nazi, Goebbels, evil bitch, ugly faced cow, Fascist, concentration camp guard, child murderer, and so on. She is even being criticised for her shoes, the type of footwear many South Asian heritage women wear. Also accused of masturbating (she has her hands in her pockets in the photo)

Most of these comments are from men. Why so much hate for a woman doing a tough job?

Regarding the interest in shoes, one of the police officers pictured leading an arrested person away is in plain clothes and is wearing trainers, not safety shoes. Patel has done this sort of thing before and seems to either wear gold trainers, or gold slip ons like the ones she wore this time. Both seem like sensible choices in her preferred colour. It is a bizarre detail to focus on.

I hate Priti Patel for her brexit politics and general right wing attitude. However agree that there is a lot of misogyny at play on social media. It's not surprising women don't want to be MPs. The misogyny ends up selecting for a certain type of woman I think.
Mind you we aren't much better on here for slating female politicians for "not knowing what a woman is". I'm much more positively inclined to Jess Philips than Priti Patel but that seems frowned on

Hmmmm I despise her politics and I think she is terrible at her job. I struggle to see criticism of her through a feminist lens because I just hate her so much

I think mocking clothing and shoes doesn't only happen to women, Jacob Rees-Mogs suits are often taken the piss of.

I also think drawing parallels between Pritis treatment and Diane Abbott's is very wrong. attacks on Diane are rarely based on her actual politics whereas with Priti criticism is based largely on her fascist views and implementation of disgusting policies.

See, I did say it was difficult for me to separate her politics from priti the woman in politics!

Racist, bigot, pedantic, pretentious, a snob, and a bully. She wanted the job. Couldn't care less whether people slag off her shoes or anything else about her. So, some of the comments might be misogynist, but she's a tory and last time I checked the Tories are not some enlightened party calling for equality between all. She's just another twat who thinks some women are better than other women, some women better than some men, and some men better than all women......its called Conservativism for a reason! Conserve the status quo. She's the token female, stupid and vain and pretentious enough to believe her position is due to her ability. Stupid enough to tether herself to a political party and ideology that not so long ago would have put her a boat home, or tied her to a kitchen sink somewhere.

Yup. She's made a few dodgy comments about white women in the past, but the abuse Abbott gets is really horrible and again it's mostly from men

There’s nothing inherently ‘south asian’ about flat loafers.

Not sure how accepting misogynist comments about women you don't like helps the cause of promoting equality. That surely perpetuates the idea that some women, the ones you personally don't like, deserve to be abused with misogynistic comments.

Some just can't stomach a high profile, powerful woman.

Personally I hate the sly fucker, but the vitriol she and other female politicians receive is definitely due to misogyny.

But surely this relies on those comments actually being misogynistic. How can we determine whether the comments are because of misogyny rather than fair criticism because she has evil politics?

For me, misogyny would be saying the fact she wears make up means she can't be good at her job. Or saying that her outfits must prevent her from carrying out her role. Etc etc
