Basically marry a rich partner
so you can give up work?

My mum was raised solely by her dad in 70'a (basically because her mum had a affair and literally buggered off one day). He was remarkable - working at least 2 jobs at a time whenever he could to put food on the table for his five kids. It was a very unusual situation back then.

My mum raised me to work hard so I could get a career and be self-sufficient as she saw how important that was for her dad and ultimately their family e.g. you don't know what's around the corner in any marriage.

Do you think a lot of people just go through their lives ultimately planning to rely on someone else financially?

It just doesn't sit easy with me.

No worries 😀

@MissBarbary

You’d concede that hormones play a role in reactions, behaviours, relationships, no? You’d know male and female hormones are different, yes?

What are you on about? I thought FWR detested the idea that women's reactions "hormonal"

I'm sure you have your own reasons for elevating "mothering" but I remain wholly unconvinced by almost everything you have posted.

That’s fine. Science wins every time in my book.

FWR might detest the idea that women are affected by hormones but every other thread seems to share struggles women have with a variety of ‘women only’ issues related to physiology. Certainly oestrogen impacts on many areas of women’s lives, as do progesterone, LH, prolactin and FSH.

Or are you are suggesting women invent dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, menopause symptoms, PMT, PND, endometriosis and PCO? Or maybe they don’t impact on women very much at all because they’re just the same as men?

I’m not sure FWR has an opinion. Isn’t it simply a group of women who share some views?

LimpLettice · 13/05/2021 08:49

There's a massive difference between blaming every reaction women have on hysteria and hormones and acknowledging the important, basic functions hormones play in behaviours and basic biological drives.

Since when does FWR detest the idea that women are affected by hormones?

Many (not all) posters on these boards seem to have an issue with anything that highlights ways in which men and women are actually different, and can have very different life experiences particularly when those things cannot be said to be men's fault.

The OP's attitude on this thread is a prime example. Zero understanding of the possibility that men and women, and their experience of parenthood, might be different.

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 13/05/2021 18:12

I've seen lengthy discussions about the differences between men and women's brains (nb there is very little difference apart from size), but given that many of the women here are extremely well versed on the impact of testosterone on performance I find it unlikely that many would say hormones have no effect on women. What you're probably referring to is a desire to fight back against sexist stereotypes and the use of "hormonal" as a pejorative term against women, rather than there being more effort to understand women's health (a neglected area).

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 13/05/2021 18:22

When i was 13 i was told by a naval commander that women couldn’t be fighter pilot cos we were too hormonal

midgedude · 13/05/2021 18:23

There is a huge difference between wanting to understand how hormones are different between males and females, understanding the physical effects of that and making the assumptions that women ( and not men ) are hysterically negatively irrationally hormonal

hecates

My friend and i ran off giggling

Id like to think that nowadays id give an erudite and fascinating speech on sexism and its effects

But actually i think id just run off giggling

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 13/05/2021 19:16

Hahaha!

I'm not sure you've cited much science- you certainly have your own agenda- which you has been shown on several occasions in the past.

I would say that many of the people at pains to point out that brain structures seem to be pretty much the same don't really want to extend the question of mental and emotional and other brain function past physiology into how hormones might affect function.

As far as it goes I think that is a fair criticism.

Dontknowowt · 15/05/2021 08:46

@HecatesCatsInFancyHats That reminds me of an interview SBC did as Ali G. He said there's no way women could be pilots because they could never be trusted to fly a plane, especially when on their period!! Obviously he was taking the p to make a point.
