NeoPronouns / nounself pronouns?!!

Waitingfor12th · 08/04/2021 20:13

I read this article and really tried to keep an open mind, but towards the end my brain was fried!! Has anyone got their head around neopronouns? Or even heard of this? I admit I hadn't.

A 13 year old is quoted as saying their chosen pronouns are bink/bonk. Other popular ones include bun / bunself and kitten / kittenself. Apparently the responsibility is on the other person to look up the person's "Carrd" (a one page website describing their pronoun preferences) before addressing them, so that there is no excuse for the person being addressed incorrectly.

Some young people are literally using an emoji instead of a pronoun! Such as "where is 🐾" / "what does 🐾 say?". It reminds me of when Prince changed his name to a symbol. I was 15 when that happened and thought it was silly.

This movement will eat itself. The sooner the better!

ArabellaScott · 08/04/2021 20:26

bink/bonk

That's actually really sweet.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 08/04/2021 20:29

Speak for bonkself

GreyhoundG1rl · 08/04/2021 20:32

The entitlement 😂 Google me in advance, then you'll know how special I am 🤣🤣🤣. Where do they get it from?
Poor little muppets.

This is satire surely. No? It’s quite hard to tell really.

NewlyGranny · 08/04/2021 21:40

Imagine being a teacher and potentially having about 150 sets to keep track of, constantly shifting, some unpronounceable and every precious individual ready to be offended/litigious if you slip up. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Yes exactly. It's surely unworkable?! I mean, Prince was a prime example. Everyone called him "the artist formerly known as..." which is ridiculous.

There's also the comment from a trans person near the end of the article, who rightly questions why on earth people would want to be known as an object or an animal. It's dehumanising!

Before you read this comment of mine you MUST first check that you are on the list of people allowed to read my comments. If you fail to comply, you should self-report to the Thought Police for re-education.

NewlyGranny · 08/04/2021 22:12

I'm sticking with I, me, mine. 😊

RandomGrammarPun · 08/04/2021 22:14

150 sets for a teacher? Try 3-400 different names to learn, let alone pronouns if you teach a non-core subject!

This is totally inevitable once you accept the idea that pronouns somehow belong to the individual to define.

It is a really interesting idea from a linguistics standpoint. I guess that in this case, it would mean that really each person, as well as having a personal name, would have a personal set of alternate references. So, several forms which label them depending on the grammatical situation.

But any reasonable language would then just use the same one for all, essentially losing the whole idea of pronouns. Why have extra, completely different, personal forms to memorise?

Defaultname · 08/04/2021 22:34

@ArabellaScott

bink/bonk

That's actually really sweet.

All through the day I bink bink, I bink bink, I beep bonk All through the night I bink bink, I bink bink, I bink bonk.

As the Beatles might have put it.

persistentwoman · 08/04/2021 22:52

This has made me laugh. And yes - bink / bonk is very sweet - for 8 year olds Hmm

ArabellaScott · 08/04/2021 22:53

the poetry is flowing tonight, Default!

neroforte · 08/04/2021 22:57

well it doesn't really matter does it. if someone says that's what the would prefer to be referred to as then i'll respect it even if i don't fully understand it. however unless they have their pronouns easily accessible (eg in their bio) then they can't expect people to know and shouldn't get angry at those who use the wrong ones.

LittleBearPad · 08/04/2021 22:58

One sample: “Bug likes bugs.” “Those things belong to Bug.” “Bug wants to work by Bugself.”

Confused

many people who use these pronouns are neurodivergent and feel disconnected from gender. again, i don't really understand it but such a small % of people actually use these pronouns that if i can change one small thing and make them feel more comfortable, then of course i'd do it.

NotBadConsidering · 08/04/2021 23:03

In defence of Prince, because of how amazing he was, he changed his name to that symbol because of the legal dispute with Warner Bros. about ownership of his music, as a protest. It wasn’t because he saw himself as special.

Even though he was, in ways that these people will never, ever be...sigh...gone too soon 😞

Bugself... What a pile of wank. How is colluding in this idiocy conferring respect? I'd like everybody to respect my right to use language as I choose, not as someone has had the audacity to choose for me.
FlatteredFool · 08/04/2021 23:04

Meanwhile, back on planet earth, the grown ups are worrying about their kids, finances, the latest shenanigans with the neighbours and the multiplication of grey hairs and fine lines and trying to remember how to do algebra and the different types of erosion to help the kids with their homework and simultaneously wondering what to cook for dinner, online shopping, breaking up a literal cat fight, and doing the mountains of laundry and all the admin. Such a luxury of the wealth of time in youth to navel gaze and ponder ones neopronouns.
