NeoPronouns / nounself pronouns?!!

Waitingfor12th · 08/04/2021 20:13

I read this article and really tried to keep an open mind, but towards the end my brain was fried!! Has anyone got their head around neopronouns? Or even heard of this? I admit I hadn't.

A 13 year old is quoted as saying their chosen pronouns are bink/bonk. Other popular ones include bun / bunself and kitten / kittenself. Apparently the responsibility is on the other person to look up the person's "Carrd" (a one page website describing their pronoun preferences) before addressing them, so that there is no excuse for the person being addressed incorrectly.

Some young people are literally using an emoji instead of a pronoun! Such as "where is 🐾" / "what does 🐾 say?". It reminds me of when Prince changed his name to a symbol. I was 15 when that happened and thought it was silly.

It's nonsense; nothing to get your head around.

@neroforte

well it doesn't really matter does it. if someone says that's what the would prefer to be referred to as then i'll respect it even if i don't fully understand it. however unless they have their pronouns easily accessible (eg in their bio) then they can't expect people to know and shouldn't get angry at those who use the wrong ones.

I am notoriously bad at remembering names and recalling names when talking to someone else about them. I drive myself mad when I have to ask people their names for the seventh or eighth time. If I was to meet these people, say a group of them, my brain would melt if I had to remember their neopronouns too.

Well, only if I took it seriously, of course.

Then, I have thoughts like, would I need to have a doctor's exemption note in the future to say I am unable to remember pronouns?

Someone told Rose Of Dawn she was ''literally a Nazi'' because she was a bit Confused at the pronouns tree/treeself

I can’t even remember words I’ve known for ages/what I went into another room for/the two things I went into a shop for/the things I was about to write on my list before I forgot them/the end of my sentence - I’d be hung drawn and quartered by the end of the first day!

neroforte · 08/04/2021 23:14

of the few people i have encountered who use neo-pronouns (all online, never met anyone irl who uses them because as i said, it's a tiny % of people who use them), many are fine with they/them pronouns being used too, for those who aren't comfortable/whatever with using their neo/noun pronouns. i doubt you will ever encounter someone who uses them anyway, but if you do, using they/them pronouns instead will likely go down without any conflict and if they do get funny about it, they aren't really worth the effort.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/04/2021 23:28

These things aren't 'pronouns'. They're a set of extra personal nouns with added grammar to worry about.

A pronoun which makes communication more difficult is an utter failure.

That exchange is priceless. It's like a parody.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/04/2021 23:36

if i can change one small thing and make them feel more comfortable, then of course i'd do it.

Most people categorically won't, because it's a completely unreasonable request demand, but if you really want to dance to the tune of using a set of paw prints to talk about someone rather than easily recognisable and grammatically correct language, that's up to you. In my mind I'll put you in the same box as them.

ThatsShitTryHarder · 08/04/2021 23:37

One sample: “Bug likes bugs.” “Those things belong to Bug.” “Bug wants to work by Bugself.”

I think it’s just as well Bug wants to work with Bugself because Bug is a self-absorbed twat.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/04/2021 00:05

Well this Neurodiverse person can't remember names and does not recognise faces well so has bugger all chance of remembering anything extra. Change your hair style and I'm fucked if I know who you are.

Thingybob · 09/04/2021 00:16

I think that is a parody account.

Serafina McGrath seems to be modelling themselves on Titania but unfortunately they are not as funny.

Confirming this is a thing in my daughter's school in Dublin.... we were just chatting about it yesterday... So bizarre

Tell me the last time you had a conversation with someone and used pronouns other than ‘you’. Hi Sam, do you want to get a coffee? Hi they, do they want to get a coffee?

See? We just don’t use pronouns in the way people think. We use them when referring to someone. Then the person being referred to is not usually present.

We (Russian: Мы, romanized: My) is a dystopian novel by Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin, written 1920–1921. It was first published as an English translation by Gregory Zilboorg in 1924 by E. P. Dutton in New York, with the original Russian text first published in 1954. The novel describes a world of harmony and conformity within a united totalitarian state. It influenced the emergence of dystopia as a literary genre. George Orwell claimed that Aldous Huxley's 1931 Brave New World must be partly derived from We, but Huxley denied this. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_(novel)

Maybe he should have called his novel 'Bonk' if regular pronouns are oppressive?

Witchesbelazy · 09/04/2021 07:04

As a rule I’ll always use peoples preferred pronouns. However noun pronouns are something I just ignore. No I’m not calling you frog/frog self .

Neopronouns from what I’ve read are somewhat different as they are mostly used by those in the community that are neurodiverse.

highame · 09/04/2021 08:33

I can imagine the new 'teach yourself English' books causing a few raised eyebrows and can't begin to imagine the difficulties of those writing our teaching aids, especially as they'll need to be re-issued every 5 minutes. The end of gender identity will be evidenced by the sudden realisation it will increase classroom time 😂

Classic YouTube video - did the rounds a lot a few years ago, but maybe some haven't seen it:

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 09/04/2021 08:56

*This is totally inevitable once you accept the idea that pronouns somehow belong to the individual to define

it's a really good point

pronouns belong to society, to our language. they're not the property of individuals

as for looking people up on a website before addressing them - does anyone else get a whiff of 17th century versailles? the utter boredom and privilege of people with absolutely jack shit to do

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 09/04/2021 08:57

Navel gazing nonsense.

highame · 09/04/2021 09:08

pronouns belong to society, to our language. they're not the property of individuals absolutely

i agree. however sometimes you are talking to someone else about that person while they're in earshot, and personally, instead of causing offence, i'd rather just take on board that they use different pronouns and use them, instead of purposely going for the her/him/them pronouns (although of course i might mess up a few times, but generally people will be understanding and know that their pronouns are not the ordinary)

neroforte · 09/04/2021 09:20

that is perfectly okay with me. Smile

why?

imagine being so privileged that you have to set up elaborate traps for people so you can take offence if they inadvertently refer to you as 'she' instead of 'bink'?

why would I ever indulge such a person?
