Greater London Authority Elections

Hello, I am new to London and this is the first time I will be voting in the GLA elections. Does anybody know if there are any GC candidates? I suspect not, but want to vote for someone who represents my views if possible.

@HermioneMakepeace

What questions should we be asking them?
These are useful - the questions that Fox answered

HermioneMakepeace · 26/03/2021 12:21

@LangClegsInSpace that’s helpful, thanks for posting that. Where is the best place to ask? Twitter?

So much of London is about being totally loyal to one or other of the two main parties that I doubt any independent has a chance. But feel so let down that a protest vote or spoilt ballot is the only option.

For many parts of London there is a clear class divide, which suprisingly has been aggravated by the LTNs. Even staunch Labour supporters are angry at the undemocratic way these have happened (and apprently implemented without any consultation with those of the relevant knowledge as to actually achieve something).

This has led to a strange alliance of women, member of the BME communities, people with disabilites and white working class. But many of these in wanting to vote Labour would never, ever vote Tory.

So I suspect a drop in the Labour vote, but no one place that disaffected former Labour voters will go to to make a big impact.

HermioneMakepeace · 26/03/2021 18:30

I have voted Labour all my life. My parents voted Labour, my grandad worked with Clement Atlee on his campaign.

Labour have turned their back on women so I will not vote for them or their mayoral candidate. I will vote for whomever is prepared to say they will fight for women’s sex-based rights.

In the absence of anyone like that, I will vote for the guy with the bin on his head.

I think Binface will be my first choice. Here's his manifesto. More sense than most of the others. I always vote, usually for whoever seems to be the least worst option, but I'm really struggling this time.

HermioneMakepeace · 26/03/2021 18:55

I wonder how many GC people there are in London? Could you win an election by promising to protect women’s sex-based rights?

OP posts:
stumbledin · 26/03/2021 19:27

I thought Laurence Fox was the only "gender critical" candidate?

stumbledin · 26/03/2021 19:30

If Environmental Groups can get together and hold an online hustings for candidates to answer questions, shouldn't women / women's groups be doing the same?

Agree. I think the Lib Dems and especially the Greens will pick up a little, from people who are ABT but disillusioned with Labour/Kahn, and either haven’t been paying attention to how batshit they’ve become or for whom women’s rights just aren’t a concern. Some may even vote Fox. None of these are a feminist option, IMO. I’ve no idea right now. If the elections were today I’d probably vote Count Binface no 1 and just draw a pair of tits in the no 2 box.

The candidates for the AM seats haven’t been announced yet I don’t think. I think I’ll see about asking questions at any virtual hustings or writing to them once they are maybe. Which party to give my list vote to - I don’t know, there may need to be some nose-holding tactical voting there.

It just takes an organisation to invite the candidates and the candidates to accept.

I’d love WPUK to offer to host perhaps. I think we can predict how some candidates may react to that, but that in itself would be sunlight.

HermioneMakepeace · 26/03/2021 19:58

@IndigoJasmine that would be great if we could get WPUK to host!

I've just ages compiling this list of the twitter acounts of candidates, only to see that we wont know until 30 March. Will post anyway but not waste time with all the . Just paste link into browser if interested.

In no particular order:

Piers Corbyn (only a fake twitter account or he is a total nutcase!)

Charlie Mullins (Pimlico Plumbers? )

re a women's hustings, I think certain candidates wouldn't turn out for one hosted by WPUK Sad but if someone like the Women's Resource Centre did it, you can bet only well vetted questions would get through.

I wonder if a group like Southall Black Sisters would do it?

stumbledin · 26/03/2021 20:07

Fantastic - mumsnet has made all the links active - I never knew that.

PotholeHellhole · 26/03/2021 20:13

Piers Corbyn (only a fake twitter account or he is a total nutcase!)

I believe both may be the case!

The account that I think is his, hasn't been used since 2016. The newer one is definitely intended as a pisstake.

PotholeHellhole · 27/03/2021 09:58

According to this article on all the options by Otto English, Piers Corbyn isn't on twitter because he was banned!

A few months later, he was suspended permanently from Twitter but he has been seen popping up at anti-lockdown events ever since.

What's the deadline to put forward a candidate? It's £1,000 deposit to stand and you need 66 supporting signatures including 2 from every borough.

Are you thinking of standing?
eurochick · 28/03/2021 07:23

That video is incredible. TWAW really is a new religion isn't it? Saddiq knows it's utter BS but he knows he will be excommunicated if he dares to say anything that suggests he doesn't believe.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 28/03/2021 10:59

Apart from the protestors tunnel and the facelift for Croydon, I cannot think of much to not like about Count Binface's manifesto. I would welcome the return of Ceefax to all tv channels, to save me having to change channels to keep up with football or cricket scores.

Though if he does stand, I hope someone does ask his views on safe spaces for women.

stumbledin · 28/03/2021 16:24

As I mentioned up thread I think that the deadline is 30th March.

But I find that official language a bit obscure! www.londonelects.org.uk/im-candidate/statutory-notices-and-elections-timetable

A lot of the independet candidates actually seem to only be interested in a single issue, and I suppose are just using this as a means to publicise their cause.

I am hearbroked to find out the Laurence Fox was apperenty canvassing locally - not! He may be gender critical (just to be contrary I suspect) but his other policies are quite strange. Like an angry school boy throwing stones because he knows his parents will tell him off for being naughty.

Apparently the Tory candidate is not getting any support from Tory HQ. Not sure if it is him or they think it a lost cause.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 28/03/2021 17:02

@MumsnetTowers any chance of getting a Q+A with someone from each of the parties before the election?

HermioneMakepeace · 28/03/2021 18:39

@CuthbertDibbleandGrubb that’s a great idea!

If they did that for London they would have to do the Mayoral races in other cities!

But today's the day we should know the final list - but wont be sitting up into the night to find out what it is!

HermioneMakepeace · 30/03/2021 16:21

I wonder what percentage of Londoners are GC?

OP posts:
stumbledin · 31/03/2021 19:09

Final list of candidates - I think if they get less than a certain number of votes they lose their deposit:

Shaun Bailey Conservative Party Candidate
Kam Balayev Renew
Sian Berry Green Party
Count Binface Count Binface for Mayor of London
Valerie Brown The Burning Pink Party
Piers Corbyn Let London Live
Max Fosh Independent
Laurence Fox The Reclaim Party
Peter Gammons UKIP
Richard Hewison Rejoin EU
Vanessa Hudson Animal Welfare Party
Steve Kelleher Social Democratic Party
Sadiq Khan Labour Party
David Kurten Heritage Party
Farah London Independent
Nims Obunge Independent
Niko Omilana Independent
Luisa Porritt Liberal Democrats
Mandu Reid Women's Equality Party
Brian Rose London Real Party

I had wondered what the Burning Pink Party platform was but have just found out is was formed by XR and is an anti political party party - ie to get elected to dissolve all parties.

I think I said up thread that a lot seem to be standing to promote their single issue campaign.

Not sure who is actually standing to improve London!
