Hello, I am new to London and this is the first time I will be voting in the GLA elections. Does anybody know if there are any GC candidates? I suspect not, but want to vote for someone who represents my views if possible.

Trouble is, if you quote someone you have to quote their whole post, so it gets confusing. I didn't mean to be; sorry.

Most of the candidates give short summary of aims for east London to a local paper

Have just found out a bit more about Brian Rose (2nd in polls to Khan) is an American now resident here and has a corporate back ground. He looked like something out of Wall Street.

His solution is that big business will create enough money to build extra housing (by christmas!) and that TfL can be made to run at a profit.

Confused

It seems like it's a close call between the Animal Welfare Party and Count Binface, when it comes to best choice.

If you put your postcode in here www.electoralcommission.org.uk/who-we-are-and-what-we-do/elections-and-referendums/upcoming-elections

Then you will get a list of all the mayor candidates, all the individual GLA candidates for your area, and then the parties you can vote for the additional
GLA list candidates.

WEP’s top list candidate is Harini Iyengar. She’s really interesting, a barrister with expertise in equal pay amongst other things (she wrote law book on gender pay gap stuff) www.11kbw.com/barristers/harini-iyengar/ - this is who WEP seriously think they have a good chance of getting elected to the GLA. I chatted with Harini a bit at WEP conference in 2018. She had no clue at all about gender ideology, she made fun of it along the lines of (paraphrasing!) ‘well I must be a man then!’ and seemed to have a naturally gender critical slant, as you would expect of an intelligent professional woman with a good understanding of equality law, but at the same time presented a slightly ditsy, I-don’t-know-enough-about-this-to-comment approach, which was slightly surprising even then given her professional work. I don’t know if she’s made any other public comment but it’s 2.5 years later now, post-JKR, she’s had enough time to learn about the issues and form a position.

Does anyone know much about TUSC? I’ve done a little reading this morning but wasn’t very familiar with them before, they’re standing candidates for the GLA regional seats. I understand they are the left-of-Labour choice, and have been re-activated by Labour moving centrally under Keir Starmer. They are mainly anti-austerity, a section of their ‘core policy platform’ reads “They [TUSC councillors] would link up with those taking action against climate change, the Black Lives Matter movement, and campaigns against attacks on women's rights and services.” A bit confusing, from that sentence I can’t make out if they are for or against BLM!

WEP Hackney are hosting a hustings on Friday, moderated by Sistah Space, for GLA North East constituency candidates on ending violence against black women and girls

TUSC seems to be union led so suspect not very gender critical - see www.tusc.org.uk/17516/01-04-2021/candidates-update-now-its-over-330-standing-for-tusc-on-may-6

Cwenthryth not sure if you have read all of this thread but dont think anyone is thinking of WEP as being something to vote for!

Pre-pandemic, the Tube turned a profit, but this subsidised the bus network (vital for low paid shift workers, especially south of the river).

Count Binface and Animal Welfare for me too.

stumbledin · 16/04/2021 15:07

Greater London Mayoral Hustings - What will you do to end violence against women and girls? EVAW, Imkaan and WRC.

There aren't any named speakers and wonder who they will get to take part.

Animal Equality Party and Count Binface for me I think!

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 04/05/2021 14:22

I voted communist for the first time in my life as they know what a woman is and want to protect our rights. Strange times.

stumbledin · 10/05/2021 18:52

I shouldn't be surprised but if you rely on media or even twitter headlines you would get the wrong impression about how votes were cast (apart from the top two).

So big splash for Count Binface but in fact he was only 9th.

And in fact Niko Omilana was 5th (after the 4 main parties) but ... only 2,000 more than Laurence Fox!! The media made he seem was the worst performing candidate.

And the SDP - only party to support women's sex based right - was 4th last.

These figures from wikipedia as i cant find details in any newspaper nor on the London.gov web site.

Table is quite a long was down this page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_London_mayoral_election

Still think the Tories shot themselves in the foot by not doing a better job of suppporting their candidate. Anyone would think they didn't even do press conferences for him because why? they are inherently racist, or because Boris wants to keep the title of only Tory Mayor of London.

As if their plans to change the voting method from supplementary to FPTP would make any difference.
