Hello, I am new to London and this is the first time I will be voting in the GLA elections. Does anybody know if there are any GC candidates? I suspect not, but want to vote for someone who represents my views if possible.

@Cwenthryth unless it is in the constituency vote, you cannot vote for an individual on the London Assembly.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/04/2021 12:32

and the work of the WEP unravelling

Where was this work? I must have missed it.

Oh I thought you had one vote for your area of London (for an individual) and one list vote (for a party)

PeterPomegranate · 07/04/2021 15:39

“ Apparently the Tory candidate is not getting any support from Tory HQ. Not sure if it is him or they think it a lost cause.”

Husband and I had separate letters (we live together) from Rishi Sunak telling us to vote for Shaun Bailey. Complete with multiple photos of Rishi Sunak - one with Shaun Bailey and one as a letter head.

Safe Schools Alliance have a set of five questions for mayoral candidates safeschoolsallianceuk.net/2021/03/26/london-mayoral-elections-2021-our-5-questions/

ArtemisiaGentle · 07/04/2021 16:22

As a general point, I have tried to troll engage with most of the candidates on Twitter and only Count Binface bothers to reply.

Binface might get my first choice. He's a big advocate for homelessness charities which I think is important given how many homeless folks are here. His policies are specific not wishy washy general crap like "jobs jobs jobs".

I am stuck with my second choice. I cannot decide.

stumbledin · 07/04/2021 17:02

Not trying to defend WEP or any individuals members, but at the moment nearly all of the main stream media report as though TWAW.

Day after day there are news stories about "cruel" treatment of trans people in America, the terrible cost to a TW of being nominated for a Women's prize, and so on, and so on.

Over and above the actual trans issue it is so utterly depress how women are seen as not having any individual value.

It still astonishes me how the media just meekly went along with the demonising of JKR.

And those who do stand up for women's sex based rights are too often as not doing it to be anti woke rather than any deeply thought out position.

Beginning to think that women have been cancelled.

Tealightsandd · 07/04/2021 17:04

I like the Animal Welfare Party but Binface sounds good too Artemisia gentle.

FFS, I just want to be able to vote based on a candidate's stance on transport, environment, education etc. I shouldn't have to check whether or not they know and publicly acknowledge what a woman is. Batshit howling bonkers state of affairs that we've been forced into.

stumbledin · 08/04/2021 14:27

They have been starting to do some coverage of candidates on local London news, and it seems that the current Mayor is getting way more air time.

Poor Lawrence Fox standing in Trafalgar square was only shown saying it was time to open up London our freedoms are being taken away. On the other hand he may not have anything else to say.

Xanthangum · 08/04/2021 20:16

This is a really interesting reply.

twitter.com/RejoinP/status/1380203491768074241?s=20

'Admin' says that the Rejoin EU is generally opposed to intolerance and bigotry (who isn't, after all?) and they let their candidate tear into SSA, including straight-up accusations of 'attacking the rights of the trans community'.

Leaving the party free to disassociate themselves from his views in future. If they need to.

Green Party announce 'zero murders in London' plan

Well this sounds a really admirable objective, but then when you read the article it is only about young people and street violence.

Meaning Green Party thinks murder of young people is bad (of course) but murder of women in their own homes by DV perpetrators isn't worth doing anything about!!

And this is a woman saying it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-56652222

The odds suggest that Sadiq Khan is comfortably in pole position to win a second term as London Mayor and Betfair make him a very strong 1/50 favourite to retain his position in office.

"Former banker and London Real Party candidate Brian Rose is Khan's closest competitor at 7/1, ahead of Conservative hopeful Shaun Bailey (12/1)."

The latest odds also put George Galloway, Sian Berry, George Osborne, David Kurten, Luisa Porritt at 100/1.

While Piers Corbyn and Peter Gammons are on at 250/1 to take the London Mayor job.

Is George Galloway standing for Mayor?

PotholeHellhole · 10/04/2021 01:29

Is George Galloway standing for Mayor?

Well, he's certainly not on the official list I just checked!

Bit embarrassing for the other candidates actually standing, who've been given the same odds. Shock

HermioneMakepeace · 10/04/2021 02:06

DH says he’d rather vote for a potato.

I would vote for a potato if it promised to protect our sex-based rights.

Seriously though, Count Binface appears to be the favourite amongst people on this thread. Given the general high intellect of posters on FWR, what does that tell you about the quality of the candidates?

OP posts:
stumbledin · 10/04/2021 15:56

I think on reflection the inclusion on George Galloway and other names was showing that most actual candidates have very little chance, and in fact these others who aren't even standing have more chance of being elected.

And I cant remember a thing about Brian Rose!

PotholeHellhole · 10/04/2021 16:02

I'd definitely rather vote for a potato than anyone in the Green party. I do wonder why they bothered having the Verita report done, seeing as they have continued in exactly the same vein.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/04/2021 16:04

@HermioneMakepeace

I actually felt sorry for Sadiq Khan in that video. He obviously thinks it’s a load of shit but has to toe the line.
I am fairly certain that Sadiq Khan drank the koolade as long ago as the late eighties or early nineties, when he first joined Liberty.
HermioneMakepeace · 10/04/2021 20:23

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime I’m not so sure. He’s quite a conservative Muslim. I can’t imagine him saying,

“Yes, it’s absolutely fine for TW [men] to use the women’s ablution rooms in mosques!”

In fact, I think someone should ask him that very question.

I know people who were there.

JustSpeculation · 10/04/2021 20:47

Binface is a definite first choice. His focus on hand driers in pub toilets is not a trivial point, but actually addresses a serious issue of style over substance. I would like to see other candidates with such a handle on the practicalities of life. Total shoo in, I feel. But I am completely stuck for a second.

HermioneMakepeace · 10/04/2021 21:25

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Sorry, where?

Liberty as it ceased to be the NCCL.

HermioneMakepeace · 10/04/2021 21:28

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Oh, I understand. Sorry. I thought you meant he was asked about men in women’s ablution rooms. I have often thought that the key to dismantling this nonsense will come from a religious angle.
