Hello, I am new to London and this is the first time I will be voting in the GLA elections. Does anybody know if there are any GC candidates? I suspect not, but want to vote for someone who represents my views if possible.

DH says he’d rather vote for a potato.

PotholeHellhole · 31/03/2021 19:28

I see you've got an SDP candidate. They're GC.

Abhannmor · 31/03/2021 19:36

The UKIP candidate is called Gammons. Is this real 😳

Tealightsandd · 31/03/2021 19:37

Don't candidates have to live in London? Piers Corbyn lives in Dorset, I thought. Unless he has a second home in London. Perhaps he's moved.

PotholeHellhole · 31/03/2021 19:37

Yes it is.
Cwenthryth · 31/03/2021 20:33

Ooh Animal Welfare party. Will check them out.

HermioneMakepeace · 31/03/2021 20:51

Vanessa Hudson Animal Welfare Party.

Interesting. Does anybody know anything about her and their policies?

OP posts:
stumbledin · 31/03/2021 23:22

AWP believes animals should have representatives in Parliament.

I am currently negotiating with my two cats to persuade them that we me as their agent they would nail it at the next election, and then the HoC dining room would take care of their very demanding needs!

stumbledin · 31/03/2021 23:30

Piers corbyn has been on endless anti lock down demos over the past few weeks. Had always thought he lived in London but maybe he commutes in for each demo!

Tealightsandd · 31/03/2021 23:43

They don't expect animals to be elected Grin Although I'm sure your cats would do a better job than most of the candidates!

They want representatives to stand up for living creatures, that can't speak out for themselves, to work on animal welfare issues. That's no bad thing. Of course it will never happen, but just imagine an alternate universe world where this was a higher priority. No industrialised intensive factory farming with dangerous overuse of antibiotics, no wet markets. The Covid pandemic (which has impacted worse on women) would never have happened.

They're a tiny party but used to work with similar parties in the EU.

Let's face it, with the alternatives on offer this party is a decent option. I don't know think they'll understand GC issues but it's not as if the others do or care (except for very unappealing right winger covid deniers like Fox). I'd like to think they at least won't lose their deposit. They're very well-meaning even if you don't support all their aims.

Tealightsandd · 31/03/2021 23:48

Maybe Piers moved. Probably makes sense to live nearer where he demos, gets arrested, and attends court. Seeing as it's such a regular thing. Unless he crashes at Jeremy's when in town.

Think I support every sentence they’ve written tbh.

Sophoclesthefox · 01/04/2021 07:11

I think I’m edging towards Binface and the Animal Welfare party.

The rest of them are diversely hopeless.

I am very much enjoying the UKIP candidate actually being called Gammons though 🤣 did he change it specially?

Sophoclesthefox · 01/04/2021 07:12

I would otherwise have gone SDP, but I’m struggling with the fact that the anti Brexit element seems to be a big thing for the candidate, when that’s the one thing I don’t like about their policies.

PotholeHellhole · 01/04/2021 07:51

That's really awkward. That's what I object to, as well.

I would be reluctant to vote for an SDP candidate if I felt that Brexit had been the SDP's main attraction to them. We've seen how single-issue party members can drag parties off-course.

Vanessa Hudson’s 7 Point Plan for London:

Push for carbon net zero status for London by 2025

Improve health, save NHS funds, protect the planet & help prevent future pandemics by promoting plant-based diets across the capital

Incentivise public transport use, demand increased funding from Government to ensure affordability, reliability & safety – improving air quality

Better protect London’s 9 million+ animals by creating an Animal Welfare Committee within the London Assembly

Prioritise the creation of sustainable & affordable homes for all

Foster a culture where speciesism is rejected – with wildlife managed non lethally, the sale of foie gras & fur in our shops discouraged, lobsters no longer boiled alive in our restaurants & where animal-free testing in London’s universities and scientific institutions is championed

Celebrate & expand London’s biodiversity, ending the use of pesticides & creating more space for nature to flourish & take centre stage.

Reading this thread with interest and have just written a blog post reflecting these issues and the feeling of political homelessness that many on here feel.

I’m involved in party politics, and find these discussions really interesting. I feel we need to listen to the mumsnet hive mind a bit more!!

Blog post here if anyone’s interested...

@PotholeHellhole thank you for sharing this. May have found someone to vote for given the Greens have lost my vote.

From an interview with Mandu Reid in the Telegraph

One of the biggest challenges for Reid has been navigating the debate over transgender rights, which she describes as a “toxic, ugly, difficult chapter”. Last summer, the WEP ran the largest consultation on self-identification for trans people. “It’s a fault line,” says Reid. “Polarisation is an increasing problem."

She has been careful not to come down on either side of the debate, but, to coin a phrase, is instead living in a constant state of “fear pressure” – “It’s like peer pressure, but different,” she says. “I feel it most keenly when I'm doing something when the stakes are high and the margin for error is small.”

She believes women are treated more harshly than men when it comes to sensitive issues. “I feel that I have less leeway than others to make mistakes and get things wrong,” she says, before criticising the Labour and Conservative parties for not doing more on the trans debate.

"I'm sick and tired of women having to do all the hard labour all the time to deal with difficult, intractable issues that affect the whole of society," she says. "But I don't want to inflame the situation and distract from the fact that every year in this country 80,000 women are raped. If the WEP gets completely bogged down in the quagmire of this issue, then we're not serving trans women, we're not serving any women."

Does she worry that a misstep in the trans debate could lead to her being cancelled – and the work of the WEP unravelling?

“I feel like it's something that could happen at any time,” says Reid. “People are shut down at a really unhealthy rate, which has a net negative effect on our ability to grow and learn. It's damaging and a shame. I hope that trend doesn't stick around.”

EdgeOfACoin · 07/04/2021 05:29

I don't suppose the Telegraph asked her what a woman is.

dayoftheclownfish · 07/04/2021 06:44

Was Reid in any way responsible for a WEP gender-critical group on WhatsApp being shut down? (discussed in another thread) Was it shut down so Reid could continue sitting on the fence about this? Is the redefinition of ‘woman’ in law and policy merely a ‘distraction’?

HermioneMakepeace · 07/04/2021 07:11

I actually feel a bit sorry for Sadiq Khan. He looks a bit desperate. Firstly tying himself in knots over all this TWAW rubbish, and now he’s talking about legalising cannabis 😂.

OP posts:
Cwenthryth · 07/04/2021 07:36

Hmm I’m surprised that Reid claims she has stayed neutral on the issue of gender ideology threatening women’s sex-based rights! Maybe she has been very careful to not put anything on the record. I don’t personally think she would have had any direct input to the WEP Exeter admins shutting down the SW WhatsApp group, it happened very quickly. She hasn’t commented publicly on the issue AFAIK

The leader of the Women’s Equality Party saying she lives in fear of being “cancelled” if she says something wrong on gender. FFS. Honestly - let them try. The women’s movement would still have your back if they did. I expect the TRAs were delighted with Jo Swinson and the LD’s TWAW position - but look how that panned out electorally.

Not directly relevant to us here in the capital, but a WEP candidate in Glasgow has publicly supported the single sex exemptions in EA2010 in a hustings there yesterday. I may be persuaded to vote for an individual GLA candidate if she similarly publicly supports single sex services and is at least not explicitly pro-GRA reform for self-ID. I really do want to support WEP they just make it so bloody hard!

HermioneMakepeace · 07/04/2021 07:50

The leader of the Women’s Equality Party saying she lives in fear of being “cancelled” if she says something wrong on gender.

That’s so feeble! She should not be in her position if she’s too scared to do her job. Seriously.

OP posts:
Biscuitsanddoombar · 07/04/2021 07:58

Have the WEP published the results of their biggest ever consultation on self ID? I mean if it was such a huge ground breaking piece of work, surely you’d want to get it out there 🤔
