Multiple women murdered in Atlanta

I've just come across this:

www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/at-least-four-asian-women-shot-dead-at-two-day-spas-in-atlanta/ar-BB1eEUq4

But the update suggests six Asian women across multiple locations, plus one white woman and a white man. I'm not sure that Asian in the US means the same ethnicity it does here, but regardless, that's women of a particular group targeted. It can't be a coincidence.

This is horrendous.

It's an atrocity. There is no doubt about that. But to assume it's targeted against women and race is a bit of a leap. I personally see this as the same as a mall or school shooting. Indiscriminate. Wicked, vile and just inexcusable.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/03/2021 03:15

Generally, and I've no idea here, 'Asian' is probably SE Asian or Chinese women in the US. And most news reports are talking about 'massage parlours' which may well mean brothels.

There's a lot of additional racism towards Asian Americans at the moment plus the obvious misogyny.

Well he chose somewhere called Young's Asian Massage so it's hardly Miss Marple level deduction.
PotholeHellhole · 17/03/2021 03:19

Ah. So Trump's despicable insistence on using "China Virus" for Covid could have been a factor.

Could be an Incel. Maybe snubbed on a dating site.....

Seems a "coincidence" it's massage parlours where Asian women work.

Whatever. I'm just so sick of women being targets for male misogyny EVERY FUCKIND DAY!! Angry

PotholeHellhole · 17/03/2021 03:33

Massage parlours? If people defend him because those women weren't the right kind of victim, I will go to the middle of my nearest park and just scream for an hour.

Those poor women.

This is awful.

There is an association with spas and Asian women in the US - as in they are likely to be working there - I suspect the Asian women murdered were employees rather than clients. It does seem racially-motivated. AND FUCKING HORRIBLE.

Hibari · 17/03/2021 03:43

American Republican Senators allowed these people to continue to feel empowered by refusing to impeach the orange dipshit.

This is what they do. It's what they keep doing. White supremacy, misogyny, fascism. I hope they charge him as a domestic terrorist.

WarriorN · 17/03/2021 05:41

This is horrific, those poor women. Sad

And the bbc are choosing a story about Uber as more important than murdered women.

Atlanta shootings: Asian women among eight killed at three spas www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-56424616

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/03/2021 05:46

And everyone including the BBC is talking about race and ethnicity but not about sex. When both are fairly likely to be a factor, particularly if the women are sex workers. Misogynistic men target them especially. Sad

WarriorN · 17/03/2021 05:48

I noticed that

PotholeHellhole · 17/03/2021 08:11

What, commentators refusing to address that women are targeted for violent crime on the basis of their sex? Must be a day ending in -y.

It's clearly a mass murder motivated by racial hatred, but that's not the only factor. It's almost like women from ethnic minority backgrounds have to deal with multiple types of discrimination or something...

My first thought was incel with a double dose of racism & trumpism.

Me too. BBC suggested it could be race. But all women? What are the odds...
PotholeHellhole · 17/03/2021 08:35

Yep. If you were a racist gynephobic bastard who wanted to kill Chinese women, where might you go? Oh look, he went to three of those, one after the other. Fancy that.

WarriorN · 17/03/2021 08:38

He drove a fair way from one spa to two more (or vice versa).

There's deliberate targeting of those places for some reason.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 17/03/2021 08:40

I still have this article from earlier this month in my mind...

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/mar/03/incel-movement-terror-threat-canada

MorrisZapp · 17/03/2021 08:44

Another day, another shooting rampage in America. Heartbreaking and so utterly pointless.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/03/2021 08:49

The victims were women, Asian and (it seems) likely to be engaged in selling sex commercially. There's a lot going on there :(

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/03/2021 08:50

I think many of the women were Korean.

Catslovepies · 17/03/2021 08:55

I grew up in Atlanta. These kinds of massage parlours were widely known as being thinly veiled brothels and were always staffed by Asian women who I've always thought were likely to be trafficked. The police always turned a blind eye for some reason. The Bible belt is a very strange place. It's an awful tragedy but whether the murderer was targeting Asian women or sex workers is unclear to me at this point. Either way absolutely horrible.

StillFemale · 17/03/2021 09:18

Those poor women

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 17/03/2021 09:21

Those poor women.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/03/2021 13:41

The article on the BBC has changed to include many references to various men (when the sex of the commenter is either given or implied) wanting to offer help and support to the Korean community. Or the Asian American community. Great. Where is the support and protection offered to maginalised women working in massage parlours? Not even a consideration. FFS.

When I've worked with sex workers, there are attacks on them every day. No support there.

I'd have thought the BBC would understand intersectionality.

Awful crime.Sad
