Multiple women murdered in Atlanta

I've just come across this:

www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/at-least-four-asian-women-shot-dead-at-two-day-spas-in-atlanta/ar-BB1eEUq4

But the update suggests six Asian women across multiple locations, plus one white woman and a white man. I'm not sure that Asian in the US means the same ethnicity it does here, but regardless, that's women of a particular group targeted. It can't be a coincidence.

This is horrendous.

It's like fish being asked to identify water, except it's not water, it's misogyny. They can't see it, can they?

Those poor women and some poor reporting. I struggled to find this on bbc news today.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/03/2021 19:10

These aren't the right kind of victims and I wonder if their families will want their details out there because of prejudice so this will be forgotten even yuck we than normal.

There's a thread on Black Mumsnetters about it too. But is it on the main boards or do only feminists and/or black women care?

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/03/2021 19:10

Quicker, sorry

MoltenLasagne · 18/03/2021 19:20

On the BM thread I've seen posters say that people are calling on black people to be better allies to Asian Americans. I'm absolutely astounded by that.

Murderer and offensive police officers are white, but sure let's look to the black community to fix this shit.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 18/03/2021 19:23

I only found this story after I went looking because someone I follow on Instagram had posted about it. It's horrendous.

And sympathy from the police?! Those poor women deserve justice, not someome pretending "she made him do it" is a sentiment anyone should be anything other than horrified by.

I've not seen examples of that about this incident (and if I did, I agree it would be horrendous). There is a bit of history concerning tensions between Black and Asian communities in some parts of the US, though - there's been some news stories recently about it. This is one I was reading recently in the NY Times - is this where that sentiment was coming from? (I agree it's nothing to do with the mass murder in Atlanta.) www.nytimes.com/2021/03/06/opinion/asian-american-violence-race.html
OvaHere · 18/03/2021 19:39

I fear this kind of overt mass targeting of women is going to become a more frequent thing. It's like the serial killers of 70s and terroristic tactics of the noughties melded together somehow into a new kind of horror.

They fucking what?

White bloke. White gynephobic racist bloke! This is not even on a single black American's head, never mind the black community.

Excuse me while I scream some more.

Atlanta is the 14th city in the USA for human trafficking on an industrial scale.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_trafficking_in_Georgia_(U.S._state)
Local law enforcement will not investigate this properly as it will likely lead to powerful people being involved, that's why they are focusing on race and not misogyny, shining a light on the hatred of women would mean explaining why so many women and children are being trafficked. Campaigners have written laws that legislatures have failed (ignored?) to pass.

I mentioned trafficking earlier. It doesn't make any difference to the perceived 'worthiness' of the victims. As far as I'm concerned any woman involved in sex work is completely worthy of protection. Too many are seen as the sacrifice our sex makes to male violence so more privileged women can avoid some of it.

However it does shine a light on policing in the area. Is trafficking mostly ignored or not? Is there systemic and protected abuse of women (particularly women of colour) going on? Were these women repeatedly and systematically abused?

Like the advocate said above which type of "Spas" are open for 24 hours? Of course Law enforcement will know. Atlanta has one of the biggest film industries outside of Hollywood and hosts many entertainment events. It's nickname is "Hotlanta" they traffic extra people in for "events" and it's largely ignored just like Vegas 😥. These women deserve justice, it's whether they will get it or the powers that be will try to preserve the "reputation" of Atlanta.

Stupid pillocks on twitter leaping on the murder of women to explain that 'decrim' is the answer.

But they don't actually explain how it will protect women from violent punters.

I wonder if those idiots universities who are suggesting prostitution as a way to make student loans stretch are showing things like this under the ‘job risks’?

This story just hasn’t hit the news like I would have expected (and yes there around 300 hundred shootings in America every day) and there was also a family shooting on the same day. Neither stories really made headlines. If this has been at a political or ‘rights’ rally then it would have been - Biden & co would have been on the tv (not sure if they commented)...

MoltenLasagne · 19/03/2021 09:48

I cannot comprehend why this isn't in the news. To be really crass, the "story" has a lot of active topics included in it - racial targeting, targeting of women, incel-dom, police sympathy for the perpetrator instead of the victims, police links to anti-Asian things. Then of course the nature of the murderer being so premeditated and moving across locations.

How in the hell have I still only seen this because of social media?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 19/03/2021 09:53

It was on R4 on the morning. I mentioned it to DS (they are having a huge debate at school on women’s safety) and he hadn’t heard about it.

porridgecake · 19/03/2021 10:05

Mainstream Media, including BBC in particular, is heavily censored and controlled when it comes to anything to do with women.

I cannot believe that TV journalists are completely unaware of so many issues, so it must be down to control.

SimonJT · 19/03/2021 10:29

It was reported on BBC radio (certainly was on Greg James’ show), the BBC news page and BBC news TV broadcast.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/03/2021 15:09

@SimonJT I am starting to wonder why you have repeatedly commented on the thread about a misogynistic mass shooting in Feminism Chat and have studiously avoided mentioning misogyny.

No one here is under any illusion that it isn't racist. My personal theory is that he is probably a man who doesn't see the racism in it because fetishistic Asian sex worker tropes don't register as racist for these kinds of men and he just chose to murder the sex workers he saw as 'tempting'.

But to come back and comment that it was on the media seems like a dick move. It was on the BBC but not heavily promoted and the commentary has been parlous compared to other mass shootings. Can you at least acknowledge that this was a misogynistic hate crime?

PotholeHellhole · 19/03/2021 16:12

The white woman killed was a client there to get a massage, according to the last article I linked upthread, so the right kind of victim (speaking from a press point of view - I think they all matter). But that doesn't seem to have been enough to get this the widespread attention.

OP posts:
julietmanchester · 19/03/2021 16:37

If he had only a 'sex addiction' as the murderer claims, you would think he would target the massive strip club industry in America, where some of the workers go home with some men.

I find this mass shooting more to do to race and the murderer is trying to make it about his 'addiction'

manatsu · 19/03/2021 21:10

I am beyond angry. I don't care if he had a sex addiction. That is not even approaching a reason to target and kill Asian women. His poor victims and their poor families. I am outraged but not surprised that the media seems to be ignoring misogyny being a factor in his crimes and motive.

PotholeHellhole · 19/03/2021 21:20

People seem to be struggling to identify the racism, never mind the misogyny!

I just don't get it. I really don't.

OP posts:
PotholeHellhole · 19/03/2021 21:45

FFS, this planet.

Did he need to wear a badge saying, I'm a racist, ask me how for people to see it?

When people do correctly identify the racism, they group the victims under the catch all of "asian people", neatly obscuring the misogyny.

If people can see that it's still a racially motivated murder even if there were also two white victims, why can't they see it's a misogynistically motivated mass murder even if there was also a male victim?
