The reaction to superstraight

Hey all,

I usually lurk and read threads but I fancied having a chat about this topic as I've been reading with interest - quite new to the whole trans debate and still a bit overwhelmed by it all. Was blissfully unaware a month ago and I've now found out what a rabbithole the whole thing is!

I've no doubt many people are using the superstraight thing as a means to poke fun at the trans lobby, but I also believe at least part of it may have sprung up as a reaction to the whole suffocating 'no debate' standpoint and the absolutely unflinching self indulgence shown by some TRAs with seemingly no empathy to balance it out - e.g. "I'm scared to share changing rooms with men but how very dare you have a problem sharing with me (a man)".

I watched a YouTube video where people were criticising the superstraight trend, and one young guy said (paraphrased) "if you were to date a trans person and really like them, but then find out they were trans and dump them you'd be transphobic."

Surely what you'd actually be is a victim of 'rape by deception'? People have actually been sent to prison for pretending to be the opposite sex and tricking unknowing people into sleeping with them - like Gayle Newland and Gemma Watts who posed as men to sleep with other women and received prison sentences.

I was a bit confused by this seeming implication that you'd be in the wrong if somebody concealed their sex from you and you then became angry upon finding out and dumped them.

Hoefully, this isn't the part where I find out I'm a horrible bigot... 😬

god that's an horrific read!

RedDogsBeg · 16/03/2021 16:56

PurpleHoodie I was just musing how epic the contortions would be that he would have to perform and how entertaining it would be.

PurpleHoodie · 16/03/2021 17:07

Shall we sell tickets to that show Red.

It'd be a sell out.

Fall in to line or be labelled a transphobe

twitter.com/CinchNewsJamie/status/1369349185313640452

90+% respond: "OK, if you want to label me a transphobe I can live with that". Or the response is that the word "transphobic" is losing its potency.

Note: if you're tempted to click on the poll I can't confirm that this won't reveal your twitter handle to any TRAs. However, voting is "supposed" to be anonymous.

PotholeParadies · 16/03/2021 17:39

I'm already a russet colour on the shinigami eyes database, so I'll vote. Grin

minchinfin · 16/03/2021 17:54

LOL, bring it on, I've used my throwaway account

"Super Straight" has a transphobic and almost literally murderous intent behind it. We need to stop new trends like this BEFORE they're created.

Is it finally time for companies like Google to ban the email accounts of ppl who have engaged in troll campaigns like Super Straight?"

YES

No, I am a transphobe

Not sure the word transphobe had quiet as much impact on people as the TRAs think. Like "vile", "stunning and brave" and "literal violence" they have over-used it to death.

minchinfin · 16/03/2021 18:50

Can you be "Almost Literal" ?

Whythesadface · 16/03/2021 22:00

Think about it.
So they ban super straight.
So another word is coined, bio straight.
They ban that, so another word au natural straight.
It's coming, the backlash against people trying to deny biological truth.

I don't know who came up with the whole superstraight campaign but it was f*cking smart.

It hasn't half exposed the nonsense. Suppose we'll have to wait and see the long term effects.

CousinKrispy · 19/03/2021 16:37

Christ almighty that wall of coercionConfused

nauticant · 19/03/2021 16:55

Isn't it just?

The thing that gets me HPFA is that every time I read a trans activist response to #superstraight, and I've read plenty, whenever they try to explain their position beyond simply ranting away, they find it impossible not to end up saying that excluding trans people from the people you're willing to have sex with is tranphobic. This means they're doing astonishingly self-destructive PR of saying that men should be forbidden from maintaining they won't have sex with transwomen. Some of them try to wrap this up in deliberately obscure language but it always comes down to the same thing. Every. Single. Time.

It'll fade away and the trans activists will think that the status quo has returned and it's back to business as normal. I don't think they have any idea how many people who been watching this unfold in horror.

“Gay culture is so extremely dick-centric.”

Every day’s a school day, eh?

nauticant · 19/03/2021 17:18

But of course. We've moved beyond such primitive times and now understand that sexual orientation is the attraction to the gender of someone's soul and must not involve any awareness of their sexed body.

WoolOfBat · 19/03/2021 17:51

Have these people even had sex? The comments are just Confused

Deliriumoftheendless · 19/03/2021 17:54

Personally I’ve only had sex with souls.

No, sorry, I’ve only had sex with arseholes.

Funny as it is I think that Jamie account is a parody.
"Stop sharing this poll I am linking with your troll friends"
JLBT, where has this J come from? etc

Hibari · 20/03/2021 01:00

Was them using sig runes not a red flag for anyone?

nauticant · 20/03/2021 10:19

Are you talking about the 4Chan crew who jumped on to the bandwagon once #superstraight had gone viral and the movement had started? About their use of the sig runes?

Since their interest in the movement is opportunist and cynical I'm not particularly bothered. Anyone focusing on this is a bit gullible and is allowing themselves to be played.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 20/03/2021 13:30

What are sigrunes?

AdHominemNonSequitur · 20/03/2021 13:53

It's so effective because it puts ideologically driven people who claim queer identities and the resultant and much desired oppression, in the most magnificent catch 22.

Super identities as valid sexualities can't be denied without also acknowledging the double bind they themselves put others in, without transgressing the main theological tennent. You must validate identities. I am because say I am, without assuming the role of oppressor. Thus loosing the power of the structurally oppressed.

It's mirroring, using the same techniques and language and reflecting the manipulation back.

In addition, it is unquestioningly valid to have sexual preferences and the rage and hate responses are a thing to behold.

The super prefix is also a gift for endlessly amusing variations. Superphobia, super woman etc

It's so effective I am not entirely comfortable with it.
It has exposed the contradictions, I really hope it starts to die down now.

HPFA · 20/03/2021 14:25

There's a brilliant thread here - mentions superstraight in a wider context.
