The reaction to superstraight

Hey all,

I usually lurk and read threads but I fancied having a chat about this topic as I've been reading with interest - quite new to the whole trans debate and still a bit overwhelmed by it all. Was blissfully unaware a month ago and I've now found out what a rabbithole the whole thing is!

I've no doubt many people are using the superstraight thing as a means to poke fun at the trans lobby, but I also believe at least part of it may have sprung up as a reaction to the whole suffocating 'no debate' standpoint and the absolutely unflinching self indulgence shown by some TRAs with seemingly no empathy to balance it out - e.g. "I'm scared to share changing rooms with men but how very dare you have a problem sharing with me (a man)".

I watched a YouTube video where people were criticising the superstraight trend, and one young guy said (paraphrased) "if you were to date a trans person and really like them, but then find out they were trans and dump them you'd be transphobic."

Surely what you'd actually be is a victim of 'rape by deception'? People have actually been sent to prison for pretending to be the opposite sex and tricking unknowing people into sleeping with them - like Gayle Newland and Gemma Watts who posed as men to sleep with other women and received prison sentences.

I was a bit confused by this seeming implication that you'd be in the wrong if somebody concealed their sex from you and you then became angry upon finding out and dumped them.

Hoefully, this isn't the part where I find out I'm a horrible bigot... 😬

The #superphobe community has an ally, it's Sophie Labelle:

Be careful if you're inclined to go googling for Sophie Labelle, their recent antics are very NSFW. However, there is a decent (hmm, maybe "decent" isn't the right word) run-down of things here:

But maybe I’m wrong and maybe I’m seeing something that’s not there.

You're absolutely not.

Shineonyoucrazy · 14/03/2021 14:09

Super straight, Superlesbian, super gay are all valid sexualities - they descriptions of people who have a genital preference in sex partners. This is being framed as transphobic, with the pressure on genital preference lesbians to accept male genitals. Which I think is really homophobic.

nauticant · 14/03/2021 14:21

Since this thread has popped up again, here's a link where, through a fantastic bit of archiving, a large part of the #superstraight sub reddit was preserved in aspic:

<a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/old.reddit.com/r/SuperStraight/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">archive.ph/old.reddit.com/r/SuperStraight/

Whythesadface · 14/03/2021 14:55

I said this would happen.
Only I thought it would be CIS Straight.
I just knew there would be a word to say you only like au natural sexual partners and that the Transpeople would go mad for being excluded.

Helleofabore · 14/03/2021 18:01

Thanks nauticant.

Aftershocks from the super-straight phenomenon continue to rumble on in Reddit - there's a discussion on r/TumblrInAction - which seems to be a place where people gather to mock the loopier identity crowd: "Seen a horribly oppressed transethnic otherkin blog their plight?"

But they're taking this seriously - particularly the attacks on the Vancouver Rape Relief. The yeeting of the superstraight fundraiser has drawn massive attention to all the previous attacks, and to anti-women activism in general.

Worth a read to see how non-feminists are increasingly seeing the behaviour and saying "this is getting beyond a joke".

People are getting super serious.

And in full awareness that it means they're going to be next on the banlists. Stickied comment on that thread:

We've seen your reports and are unimpressed with your superstraightphobia.

As we continue our refusal to include the trans political agenda in our moderation policies(as we do all other political agendas) it is clearer and clearer that this sub will eventually be yeeted by the admins. Join us on (link) before we're gone for good.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 15/03/2021 15:36

My teenage niece is being bullied at school because she didnt want to date a trans boy and made the mistake of saying she prefers boy boys........ This whole thing is getting ridiculous where people are being held to account over the genders they like.

I can't speak for anyone else but I like a knob that does what it says on the tin. Therefore I'd never date a trans man either.

NecessaryScene1 · 15/03/2021 15:42

I wonder if a crunch point is being reached on Reddit though. That "TumblrInAction" sub is 8 times the size r/GenderCritical ever was, and twice the size of the notorious "AgainstHateSubReddits".

As someone on Ovarit put it (edited for Mumsnet sensibilities)

yep, tras are about to checkmate themselves. Theyve run out of moves. You either leave [TumblrInAction] up and it becomes effectively a bigger GC sub, [making more people aware] every day, or ban it for transphobia [alerting] even more people all at once.

r/GenderCritical was a bunch of women struggling to overcome their socialisation to play nice. These other groups do not have that handicap.

nauticant · 15/03/2021 16:06

Blimey, they really are phobic against authoritarian identity politics:

www.reddit.com/r/TumblrInAction/

NecessaryScene1 · 15/03/2021 16:12

The current front page of that sub makes my fond memories of r/GenderCritical look tame...

Will be interesting to see how long they last now they've reached that point at the top of a tall hill-like thing.

RedDogsBeg · 15/03/2021 16:34

NecessaryScene1 I wonder if the genie is well and truly out of the bottle now.

PotholeParadies · 15/03/2021 16:42

Just saw this.

Wooee, that's another genie.

NecessaryScene1 · 15/03/2021 16:47

Nice post there by someone replying to a superlesbian

I’m very sorry that this has been happening to all of you, I didn’t join until there was around 4K people in the sub but it was still satire at that point, however after a day or so something unexpected happened. Lesbians and radical feminists came to our sub and asked for help, they told us the things we were posting to satirize the way these people are using the old Christian rights talking points about conversion therapy was actually happening to them. For myself, the fact that the last people in the world I would expect to do so were asking us for help truly made this a real thing, then the subreddit pivoted into this wholesome accepting community. I still don’t fully understand what telling someone they’re valid is supposed to mean but it seemed to make everyone happy when I did, so don’t forget: you are valid, your sexuality does not exist to validate someone else’s identity, and no one defines your sexuality but you.

Have they made their own site to document things PotholeParadies? Ooh!

That is so lovely.

Super in fact.

nauticant · 16/03/2021 09:40

This website was linked to above but this particular webpage is a clear illustration of why #superlesbian, #superstraight, #supergay, and #superbi are needed and are valid:

PurpleHoodie · 16/03/2021 11:06

And there we have it.

Everyone should take time to read nauticant's link, whether you are gay or straight.

But especially if you are gay.

You. Are. Not. Allowed. To. Be. Gay. That's what they are saying.

PurpleHoodie · 16/03/2021 11:07

The Supers are all valid.

Whythesadface · 16/03/2021 11:30

The problem is Trans was a word to show an identity.
People actually faught for it to be recognised, and screamed and shouted for their truth to be recognised. Which it was.
But now Trans women have their identity it's not good enough and they want more, they want us to participate in their being real women, so really woman are becoming Superwomen, and that once more means there will be a shown divide.

30PercentRecycled · 16/03/2021 13:42

This is why theocracies always end up as utterly vicious brutal regimes.

Wonder how little OJ would feel reading that.
nauticant · 16/03/2021 14:27

He would be triggered by the transphobia. Once over his cognitive dissonance shock he'd be straight back to the barricades on twitter blaming women.

Of course (smacks forehead in realisation!) In Little OJ Land everything is the fault of women, silly woman me for forgetting, must sign up urgently for my re-education course at the local gulag.
PurpleHoodie · 16/03/2021 15:21

Wonder how little OJ would feel reading that.

I personally don't give a shit what he thinks about it.

But, unless he is ready, and willing to state clearly to his personal social circle AND open media social circles AND the Press that he is open to having sex with a female/females, and that ALL gay men should publicly state the same, then he should just shush. Be quiet. Not speak.

His public declarations shut him as being one of those gay men who want to disrupt homosexuality.

Socially - and in law.

Stooopid.
