I thought this was interesting - a supermarket worker is in the news for wearing a skirt to work because he wants to and it feels more comfortable, but is happy as a man and doesn’t want to transition.

As Eddie Izzard used to say - “these aren’t women’s clothes, they are my clothes.”

I hope this won’t get deleted as being about a specific person. I hope it opens the door for other men to defy gender stereotypes in clothing or in hobbies/interests/activities.

Well, good luck to him, now happier in his life because he's wearing a skirt. Bless him.

Happinessisawarmcervix · 04/03/2021 22:17

I’d never wear a skirt for choice, I’m always glad that feminists won the right for me to wear trousers Grin

Good for him, seems a lovely chap.

Livpool · 04/03/2021 22:20

Why shouldn't a man wear a skirt?! It doesn't make him any less of a man.

I usually wear trousers but am 100% female

PheasantPlucker1 · 04/03/2021 22:22

Good on him! The idea that some clothes are for some and not others is ridiculous. If its comfortable and appropriate, crack on.

I wonder if his skirt has pockets?

Gurufloof · 04/03/2021 22:25

I bet mens skirts have useful pockets

NiceGerbil · 04/03/2021 22:25

I know where you're all coming from but why is it always a skirt, heels, makeup?

I do think that question is important but probably not for this thread.

And having said that I'd prefer all clothes and shoes and makeup etc could be chosen freely by anyone.

Livpool · 04/03/2021 22:27

Men's skirts would so have pockets!

They bloody would as well. Deep side ones, maybe even with a button on or a popper.
PheasantPlucker1 · 04/03/2021 22:30

I suppose anything other than a skirt, heels or makeup doesnt pass comment?

If he was Scottish it wouldnt be in the papers, because we accept kilts as normal.

TheBuffster · 04/03/2021 22:32

DH has great calves. I feel a skirt would showcase them nicely. He'd never give up pocket privilege though!
MIL was saying how trousers were revolutionary for women in her day. Oh how times change!

Gurufloof · 04/03/2021 22:34

Yeah and deep back pockets that hold an entire mobile phone like my sons do, and my wimpy arsed womans pockets dont.

Drives me bloody mad. Make most phones too big for womens hands and then give them a pocket it wont fit in. How incredibly useful.

TeiTetua · 04/03/2021 22:38

Women's clothes don't have pockets (or only feeble ones) but women generally carry handbags to make up for it. If men gave up clothes with pockets, would they then find handbags were a necessity? That would be a profound social change. We might be seeing sporrans south of the border.

And if a skirt did have enough pocket space for a full set of personal items, would it show ugly bulges? Or maybe that's a problem that could be solved somehow.

NiceGerbil · 04/03/2021 22:48

I have some fab skirts with pockets, it is more than possible!

What I hate is fake or barely functional pockets on women's clothes grrr

Cismyfatarse · 04/03/2021 22:48

I saw a man (Dutch or German) wearing a fabulous sort of Safari skirt with pockets galore. I couldn't get close enough, but I bet it had a holster.

I wanted one.

Akire · 04/03/2021 22:56

Great anyone can wear anything they want. If you are a bloke who like shorts and the airy feel on your legs then a skirt must be better the trousers. Though he doesn’t look like he is wearing tights I’m sure tights would be compulsory for women to wear to “look professional”. But things are never equal in the comfort skates.

StillWeRise · 04/03/2021 23:05

not sure about those shoes though

Alicethruthelookingglass · 04/03/2021 23:10

I miss deadhead guys in sarongs and spinny skirts. I miss punk guys in utilikilts (lots of pockets). Men can wear skirts. I like it better when they don't pretend it changes who they are. In fact, I dig men who don't gaf about gender roles and whether they are 'manly' enough, they exude a confidence in self and sexuality that is quite appealing.

MsFogi · 04/03/2021 23:13

I bet man-skirts have not only pockets but are wide enough to stride along rather than totter for fear of ripping the centre seam. I also be they are lined so don't get static/creep up.
That aside, I love wearing trousers and I have no problem with men wearing dresses/skirts (as long as they don't claim that magically changes their sex).

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 04/03/2021 23:25

Very happy for him

Almost worse than no pockets at all, hope dashed

MrsSlocombesPussy · 04/03/2021 23:30

My great aunt was considered 'fast' in the 30s because she dared to wear trousers!

sleepyhead · 04/03/2021 23:30

Kilts dont have pockets so they wear man bags sporrans, which fit quite a lot in.

MingeofDeath · 04/03/2021 23:38

I remember an episode of the Generation Game with Brucie and he was wearing a skirt ( can't remember the reason why). I distinctly remember him striding around the stage and saying something about " how you girls have the freedom to move".
Funnily enough I was talking with my husband the other day about him wearing a skirt/dresses and was saying I wouldn't mind him wearing them, as long as he didn't start saying he was a woman. I said I would draw the line at that

Liquorishtoffee · 04/03/2021 23:40

Me too - I’ve got some really nice skirts and dresses with pockets. I prefer to wear trousers at work though as they were much more practical, when ds was little (climbing up chutes, chasing small child around the park, etc).

I wouldn’t choose to wear that rather horrible looking skirt over (I assume) a plain pair of trousers but each to their own, and why not?

I remember one of our directors sending their secretary home to change because she had that audacity to wear a pair of trousers to work. This was in the City in the 90s - and the director was a woman.
