Mumsnet says Trans Rights are Human Rights!

ool0n · 03/03/2021 14:39

I always assumed Mumsnet were not the biggest supporters of trans rights, given the stories about them. But this is a good statement on Twitter, "of course trans people exist, and of course trans rights are human rights"
twitter.com/MumsnetTowers/status/1367071394870276099

Also I thought using terms like cisgender or cis were against the rules, this isn't true either -
twitter.com/MumsnetTowers/status/1367080005193318401

So can I get a trans rights are human rights, trans women are women, trans men are men and non binary people are valid!

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 03/03/2021 15:11

Why should I be referred to as cis?

I find it offensive. I’m not cis, I just am

So because I’m not a trans person, my rights are seen as lesser?

No.

PurpleHoodie · 03/03/2021 15:12

Oh dear.

Court cases are getting under peoples skin today.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 03/03/2021 15:12

Otherwise referring to people who are "not transgender" can get a bit difficult. Talking about cis men and women is a lot easier. Although I know some intersex advocacy groups prefer ipsogender rather than cisgender.

Men
Women
Transmen
Transwomen.
Nope not difficult.

And of course trans rights are human rights. But I'm not prepared to lose my fought for rights in the process.
Trans people exist and are valid.

I don't envy MNHQ trying to navigate twitter! Here's some Gin for you all. Grin

ool0n · 03/03/2021 15:13

@jellyfrizz

You seem to be using cis quite a lot and haven’t been banned.
Yes I said the people reporting being banned for using cis must have been wrong?
OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 03/03/2021 15:13

Cisgender: 'a term for people whose gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth.'

I don't have a 'gender identity', my sex was observed not 'assigned' at birth. So the term is simply inapplicable.
Some women may choose to use it but many don't.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 03/03/2021 15:13

You'd be hard pushed to find anyone on here who disagrees that trans people should have all the same human rights as any other member of their sex, plus additional protection from discrimination based on their transgender status.

PronounssheRa · 03/03/2021 15:13

Ah so this has come off the back of mimmymummy trying to pressurise MN advertisers.......... again.

Let's remind ourselves
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6764763/Britains-transgender-hate-crime-trial-halted-one-day.html

Now, I don't know about anyone else on here but I have never tried to have a transwoman prosecuted on spurious grounds.

BaronessWrongCrowd · 03/03/2021 15:14

@RowanMumsnet Visitors know that a lot of us don't agree with TWAW and use the statement to goad others on this board and get us banned. Yes, people are entitled to believe it it just as I and many others are entitled not to believe it and I am entitled to state that opinion.
Why on earth you felt the need to quote my comment to highlight that fact? No impressed.

bigotryisbad · 03/03/2021 15:14

@RowanMumsnet

It's not a great sign that MNHQ have to step in as the first mention that:

Trans women are women,
Trans men are men and
Non binary people are non binary.

Has @BaronessWrongCrowd making a threat that OP should not "goad the board with TWAW because it doesn't wash on here.".

In fact, it rather shows that the transphobia is endemic and accepted.

Although the racism from @PurpleHoodie was also something of a red flag.

TomatoesAreFruit · 03/03/2021 15:15

Thanks Mumsnet Towers Wine Gin Cake. I think you do a fab job.

Yes, this uses language to make it impossible to say trans women are women, trans men are men. So enforcing that is an Orwellian-like New Speak, where you literally can't express that opinion as the language makes it impossible. I think personally that's why "gender critical" people enforce the neologisms "transmen" and "transwomen". I personally see those as dogwhistles that the person using them is likely to be against trans people's rights.

Depends on the context. You won't be deleted (let alone banned) for discussing the term, unless you're breaking some other guideline eg inflammatory posting. You may be deleted for applying the term to someone who personally rejects it, and persisting to do so may result in a ban.

Witchesbelazy · 03/03/2021 15:16

Of course trans women and trans men should have rights.

It’s just as important to act with the same courtesy towards women and listen to their views in regards to sharing single sex spaces and how crime is reported. These things impact our rights and we deserve a voice

Leafstamp · 03/03/2021 15:16

OP, I would urge you to use caution as advised regarding the word cis. In case you haven’t read the MN guidance, here it is:

Likewise, many feminists are affronted by the term ‘cis’ and ‘terf’, so using these terms will make civil debate less likely. As we’ve said, context is everything – but it’s likely that going forward our moderation team will delete these expressions.

I don’t know. We’re they deliberately misgendering people? You will get banned for that.

jellyfrizz · 03/03/2021 15:17

Helmetbymidnight · 03/03/2021 15:18

against trans people's rights.

What trans rights have you decided that the people on MN are against?

That post was deleted within three minutes (I checked)

We're stepping in to show that our invitations to take part in good faith were, in themselves, genuine and in good faith - and that we see it as part of MNHQ's job to make sure that all points of view, expressed within Guidelines, are welcome.

dworky · 03/03/2021 15:19

Could you point me to anyone on here claiming the opposite?

womanity · 03/03/2021 15:19

I’m not cis.

Anyone else 😲 at that Tweeter openly going after Soreen? (Which my DC love, btw.)

Sophoclesthefox · 03/03/2021 15:20

I have a teeny wee suspicion that people who say they’ve been banned for using “cis” might not be being wholly truthful. As MNHQ always say - it’s the context. Flexible Rules applied in context.

This isn’t an academic forum, so whether or not a certain term is widespread in academia really is rather, er, academic...

BaronessWrongCrowd · 03/03/2021 15:20

A request, not the politest I'll admit, not to use something that people will see as goady, is not a threat.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/03/2021 15:21

But MN doesn't 'enforce' the use of those terms, OP. You can express your view that 'trans women are women, trans men are men'. You've just done it, and will not be deleted for it.

But we're equally allowed to say 'woman means adult human female'.

Xanthangum · 03/03/2021 15:21

Malt loaf gets stuck in your teeth I find. As do sprouts, if you've over-boiled them.
