Bunbury's Ninth Public Announcement - Hill Walking Club

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/a4164702-Bunbury-s-Eighth-Sealion-training-for-beginners?msgid=105201850#105201850

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

This thread will be taking a leisurely stroll through the foothills of community disruption, noting the behaviour of wildlife and interesting flora and fauna en route.

Cherry and chocolate can be excellent together , but it needs to be something like proper cherries (Black Forest gateau, chocolate with dried cherries etc) not cherry flavour'. They simply don't fit in flat items like Jaffa cakes or after eights.

And yet, I am truly hoping that Boris' Post-brexit trade deals means Tim Tams and cherry ripes destined for UK supermarkets. And that Sainsbury's bring back the Unibic Anzac bikkies !!!

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 10/03/2021 10:49

Tim Tams and cherry ripes destined for UK supermarkets.

Dan Lepard has a recipe for Cherry Ripes which is hugely popular with some friends and family - for me, it's so sweet that I can scarcely hold it in my mouth, far less chew it. So, I've often wondered what the actual product tastes like.

TundraDweller · 10/03/2021 10:56

@MaudTheInvincible I can’t eat cherry-flavoured things (although I love cherries) because of a disgustingly sweet and fake-cherry-flavoured worming tablet I think. Late 1970s. I was only 5 but remember the trauma of being forced / bribed to eat it!

OMG, possibly the only things I miss from living in Australia are TimTams and lamingtons. But cake shop lamingtons, not supermarket ones

MaudTheInvincible · 10/03/2021 11:09

I think it was some sort of antibiotic. Ugh. The very thought has put me off.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/03/2021 11:24

The penicillin syrup I was fed for tonsillitis for a week at a time year after year in my childhood tasted of fake cherry, and made me gag and cry and be utterly miserable. After several years the doctor managed to get me a penicillin syrup that just tasted of mould, and I preferred it!

ErrolTheDragon · 10/03/2021 11:33

I think they have somewhat less awful fake flavours for kids medicine now.
The memory of 60s-70s era fake cherry ... urgh, if you're going to Proust me please at least can it be via remembrances of cake not that abomination.

MeltsAway · 10/03/2021 11:44

oh yes, I remember the fake cherry cough syrup ... it really did put me off cherry-flavoured things for a while. Even reading about it now is starting a peculiar sensation in my mouth and salivary glands ... more coffee needed I think!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/03/2021 11:55

sorry....

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 10/03/2021 11:59

we had banana flavoured penicillin as DC - my DB loved it so much he drank a full bottle in one go, figuring that if a little bit made his sore throat a little bit better, lots of it would make it all better. Although it was the flavour of banana foam sweets rather than actual bananas IIRC

Oh gosh. That does look sweet, it looks like Bounty bar proportions. No, it needs just the right balance between cherry and coconut and dark chocolate to offset. Cherry ripe bars are very thin in comparison.

I am sure it may well still be too sweet, but the little squares that you can buy in Australia are just about the right amount.

I saw something in the Waitrose mag a month or two ago that stated that lamos are becoming a trendy thing here in the UK. So.... we wait with bated breath. I remember getting a quote for a bakery to produce just the slab cake for about 24 lamingtons so I could ice it for an Australia Day celebration at my work place (which was a UK office for an Australian company). The price was extortionate and that was in the 00's. They also thought I was daft, but I also couldn't find a decent straight sided slab cake tin at the time either. sigh

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/03/2021 13:00

I used to be able to get lardy cake at our local bakers who made bread overnight, but I haven't seen it in a shop for years. I suppose it is just too unhealthy: all that fat as well as sugar.

DD had that for recurrent ear infections - made me heave because it smelt just like the banana milkshake we were given in infants made with our school milk before Thatcher stole it

@ErrolTheDragon

I'm baffled why anyone would think Jaffa cakes are improved by being anything other than orange, or After Eights by alternatives to mint.

DH and I like the M&S cherry liqueurs at Christmas. Perfect marriage of chocolate, alcohol and cherries.

An appropriate three-dimensional form of cherry confectionary.

Sometimes if i don't like certain chocolate flavours my advice is "don't bite", at the moment...

well we were invited to pour some sugar on them?

TartrazineCustard · 10/03/2021 14:03

I am deriving far too much pleasure from Xanthan's lyrical reference. I once had a chap offer to pour some sugar on me, around that time period. I think he thought it was kind of seductive.

PotholeParadies · 10/03/2021 14:27

I suppose we've checked that Def didn't start offering cooking recipes over lockdown?

Further confusion in my head due to "Cherry Pie" being a Warrant song, not Def Leppard.
EmbarrassingAdmissions · 10/03/2021 16:45

Further confusion in my head due to "Cherry Pie" being a Warrant song,

I'd never come across Cherry Pie until Guardians of the Galaxy. However I'm inordinately fond of the foodstuff.

Helleofabore · 10/03/2021 17:20

Ok. Which one of you started a post telling us to get into the kitchen? Come on....

I was trying to ask which recipes you wanted and the thread got pulled!!

And seriously, 15 inches? It was a dead giveaway!!!

Wink
Helleofabore · 10/03/2021 17:21

I mean, great idea for a legit recipe swapping thread!! I am sure that it would get featured on twitter too.
