The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/a4164702-Bunbury-s-Eighth-Sealion-training-for-beginners?msgid=105201850#105201850

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

This thread will be taking a leisurely stroll through the foothills of community disruption, noting the behaviour of wildlife and interesting flora and fauna en route.

MAC number is a Media Access Control) address and the number that identifies the network adapter (s) installed on your computer and primarily assigned by device manufacturer: www.laptopmag.com/articles/find-mac-address-windows-10

So what's the difference between a MAC address and an IP address? In part, MAC addresses are permanently burned into your device while IP addresses can change depending on your location.

I'd say that changing a MAC is not for most users. And I could be wrong about what MN uses.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/03/2021 16:52

If they can tell PBP that's good, as there's way more trolls of one sort or another than banned feminists.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/03/2021 17:07

Ah. So if you use Linux and a custom machine it probably doesn't apply? Or if you get a new device and change provider?

midgedude · 09/03/2021 17:46

You can often reset an IP address by shutting your hub down ( eg overnight)

MeltsAway · 09/03/2021 17:53

I'm sorry (well angry actually) that two such articulate and moderate reasonable posters have been banned.

It's like witch trials around here sometimes ...

You'll be amused that on a message board about a hobby of mine (not Ravelry) a poster (I think is a TW) wrote that parts of Mumsnet were known "for extremist radicalisation"

The hobby (oh god no, I am not a MAMIL in disguise) is sooo embedded in middle England and the lives of mostly girls and women, and at least three different posters responded to that post with a ????? and comments such as no-one likes it when women get together to talk, another responded that some people don't even want us to use the word woman to describe ourselves - so middle England is alert to the extremism of gender extremist ideology loud & clear!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/03/2021 17:57

Good for the hobbyists!

Is Ravelry particularly woke?

Thecatonthemat · 09/03/2021 18:03

Just call us Phoenix.

Biscuitsanddoombar · 09/03/2021 18:41

I suspect a lot of incoming over the next few days especially after last week’s shenanigans

ErrolTheDragon · 09/03/2021 18:44

@Thecatonthemat

Just call us Phoenix.
Maybe there's a whole Order of the Phoenix?
midgedude · 09/03/2021 19:15

Please all think carefully about how you phrase things

More deletions springing up

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 09/03/2021 19:18

@Biscuitsanddoombar

I suspect a lot of incoming over the next few days especially after last week’s shenanigans
Trolling and then reporting no doubt - gathering screenshots "look you can tell how bigoted they are because of all the deletions"
ArabellaScott · 09/03/2021 19:24

I hope there is an afterlife.

Okay. Moving on. Brace for incoming, no doubt.

MeltsAway, that is a very cheery story! Thanks for sharing it.

I have been having a bit of a look at Spinster, there is a poster called LangCleg there, I wonder if it is the same LangCleg as was here...

MeltsAway · 09/03/2021 19:29

Is Ravelry particularly woke?

No, I don't think so, but it's another huge site with mostly women, and general interest sections, not just knitting.

Although didn't they have the great cultural appropriation wars there a couple of years ago ?

MeltsAway · 09/03/2021 19:30

Oh @DaisiesandButtercups yes, it cheered me up no end, as I get rather depressed (and angry) at having people try to take away the word 'woman' and to try to redefine fundamentally what a woman is.

DayBath · 09/03/2021 19:43

On the topic of Spinster, their number 1 rule is "no hate speech". This makes me a bit wary because they don't define what hate speech actually is...are they going on a legal definition and which national jurisdiction as they are quite varied. Or is it just down to the general feeling of the mods what hate speech is? I know they advertise as woman-centric and it all sounds very good but then so did Mumsnet at one point and look where we are now.

Now some of the very sensible things I hear like 'adult human female' are being defined by some platforms as hate speech.

DaisiesandButtercups · 09/03/2021 19:57

I’ve already seen a lot of feminist points of view expressed on Spinster which would never stand here or on Twitter. In the bit about hate speech they specify white supremacy, pornography, incitement to violence, threats of violence so probably the traditional view of hate speech rather than the more modern version (anything that women say about women’s bodies and life experiences which might upset men).

DayBath · 09/03/2021 20:34

That's good Daisies. I suppose I'm a bit jaded by Mumsnet's secret and unwritten rules that only special people can know about, it just makes me very paranoid when looking at new platforms in case these practices are widespread.

littlbrowndog · 09/03/2021 21:19

All these new people coming on to say thanks

Makes feel heartened

WarriorN · 09/03/2021 21:40

Oh I do love you lot. Wish we could all meet up in a pub and talk.

feeling a bit emotional about today and this week. Probably hormonal too; I could snog Glinner right now. I'd probably snog Helen too

I personally think this space of mn is worth preserving and fighting for. I'm furious about stupid bans and stupid deletions. At the same time I know new people come and read. And the format is the easiest to set out arguments and links imo.

The bunbury rules are worth practising fo that reason alone. (And the occasional recipe)

We mustn't let the buggers get us down

littlbrowndog · 09/03/2021 21:42

Awesome tonight. All the people who have been watching.

Saying thanks

I say thanks to all of us who have kept on going.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/03/2021 21:59

Yes littlbrowndog. Me too Smile

And can I recommend reporting those you think are not in good faith, goading etc. Even if an individual post doesn't breach Guidelines, MNHQ will look at patterns of posting if you ask. I do it all the time.

I know some say leave the posts for others to see, but I say no, report report report.

persistentwoman · 09/03/2021 22:08

Agreed littlbrowndog . Today feels a more positive day.
And also pleased to see that Glinner is positively drowning in coffee tonight.

Belleende · 09/03/2021 22:15

After having the scales gradually falling from my eyes, largely due to these pages, have only just stumbled across these foothills. Anyone fancy summarising the previous 8 threads?

I think I have arrived just as the weather is starting to turn.

WarriorN · 09/03/2021 22:22

Belle they've mainly been a source of strength and reminders around how certain incomers attempt to disrupt discussion, goad for deletions and then bans and harvest screen shots for twitter, evidence of the nest of vipers.

There's an excellent thread called break it down for me if you'd like more info. (Can't find it tho)
