Do you watch porn?

I've been reading a convo on Twitter where several people are claiming - including a woman - that women watch porn as well as men. My first reaction is, this isn't true. Sure, I've watched it from time to time, usually in the company of men, but it's so boring, so divorced from real sex/real bodies, that I'd almost rather do anything else.

Am I wrong? I realise I'm asking a group of women who are probably going to have a more cynical view of pornography, but I'm having a hard time believing women have a porn habit even remotely comparable to men's.

@IAmFleshIAmBone

Oh I thought the 'content' was made for you. So it is porn, and is problematic. Even if it's something like OnlyFans it's still contributing to an industry that causes irreparable damage to many people.

Nope, not only fans either

IAmFleshIAmBone · 20/02/2021 10:08

Well, whatever it is, this isn't a game of 20 questions 😂 just be aware that by contributing to the sex industry you are contributing to the suffering of many.

AsTreesWalking · 20/02/2021 10:14

Oh yuck, no. Once when much younger with a bf who was keen, but never again. BH and I have always found each other interesting enough!

People like sex. People like watching other people have sex. People like different types of sex. Have a look at the sex board on this forum-you’ll be horrified to know that some women are into kinky and rough sex- the sort of ‘abuse’ you are alleging that they are forced to participate in on a porn set.

I find it more offensive that as a group of feminists you don’t think that an adult woman has the mental capacity to give informed consent and make a decision about what sort of activities she participates in. It always seems to be the argument that these poor, innocent girls unable to think for themselves are coerced into giving forms of pleasure to abusive, predatory men- perpetuating stereotypes that are damaging to both women and men.

But if it makes you feel better trying to ‘protect’ these poor women that are so helpless that they need protecting by another group of people then by all means carry on- but they are probably sitting in their mansions with swimming pools in their gardens sipping on cocktails and laughing at you.

@Basqueroony

Yes, yes, yes!

Well that was a resounding yes! 🤣

I hope you manage to escape the "unempathic rape supporter" comments. Good luck!

IAmFleshIAmBone · 20/02/2021 10:20

What would be the point of me telling you the specifics of the website and the nature of what I'm involved in? Because you (or someone else on this thread) will find a way to make me out as a rape supporting, "cool girl" (wtf does that mean anyway ), abusing, unempathic person with no morals, won't you? If I thought people might be genuinely interested in the ins and outs of it, and how I know it's consensual and ethical, then I'd be more inclined to explain. But the vitriol that's been thrown my way repeatedly on this thread thus far demonstrates otherwise. So I'll leave it there.

Im not asking the specifics? There is no such thing as ethical porn.

Hahahaha. Wtf. Most porn is consumed from big sites like Pornhub and the free stuff is the tip of the iceberg to get consumers hooked and paying. So it features quite extreme content.

I agree with pankhurst. Get over yourself and stop acting like the porn you consume is somehow wholesome. It isn't. Normalisation of porn is driving all kinds of abuse of women.

Ok... so what makes it "unethical" when it is shared between a small community of people who are all consenting adults who have chosen to share that content with each other, and who also know each other in real life.*

So first the content was made for YOU by your friend. Then it was a website. Then it was a small community who all know each other in real life. Okay then. As a previous poster said, porn and the normalisation of the sex industry harms people.

And when they are older and no man wants to wank over them, when they can't get a real job because their images are there for everyone to see FOREVER, when they're incontinent from performing extreme anal sex for men's pleasure, when they suffer debilitating ptsd, who will be there for them? Only the feminists that you mock.

And where will you be? Oh that's right, wanking over the content that they are desperately trying to get removed to no avail, as these sites don't give a shit about women. You carry on patting yourself on the back and pretending you're not contributing to the horrors of the sex industry.

@LouJ85, your scenario seems far-fetched, and I'm not making you out to be disingenuous. It's not my fault if you come across that way. If you think it's ethical then you don't need me to validate you. But I don't think any porn can be ethical. And this is the feminism board, so why would you expect me to agree with you that it is?

It's not my fault if you come across that way.

The way a person "comes across" is as much determined by their audience as it is the person themselves. I am being judged as a liar and an unempathic rape supporter on here. I've never in my life felt that judgement in any other context. None.

So that's interesting.

IAmFleshIAmBone · 20/02/2021 10:41

Far fetched how?

A porn site that has only a small group of close friends who know each other in real life, where you have a male friend who makes wank videos just for you. And is completely ethical. Alright then.

LouJ85 · 20/02/2021 10:42

@IAmFleshIAmBone

Again you're avoiding my question. In the scenario I describe, coming from the viewpoint that you do, would you find anything "unethical" in that? You stated "no porn is ethical", remember. I don't understand why you're refusing to answer that question.

I am finding it astounding that virtually all the debate here is about the ethics of the porn industry with content, consent, etc
Those who watch it, how do you feel about the effect porn has on educating teenagers who watch it?
Or the women in relationships with a porn addict being coerced into re creating fantasies watched?

Avaganda · 20/02/2021 10:49

I used to but can't now I know how damaging it is.

Justhadathought · 20/02/2021 10:49

This is an interesting question. I don't recall ever being bothered by gay porn; specifically, it's the degrading and objectifying way that women are treated in the little heterosexual porn I've seen that upsets me

I've seen, and read, material about men caught up in the gay porn industry and it does not make for pleasant viewing or reading. suicides, drug addiction and all the rest.....

Shelia Jeffreys notes that much of what ends up in heterosexual porn first started in gay porn. They are linked.
