Maud, could you PM me the link to the YouTube interview if you have it please?

MaudTheInvincible · 31/01/2021 12:05

It wasn't a yt video, but an interview about being a philosopher.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/01/2021 12:07

As a matter of interest, what are the qualifications for being a philosopher? I don't think having taken a degree in the subject really counts, because that's like suggesting that a degree in English makes someone a competent author.

A faculty position and peer reviewed papers as a necessary but not sufficient condition? (I add the but not sufficient because one V Ivy meets those criteria and identifies Ivy-self as one but is a pretty crap one.)

It used to be almost a definition that anyone who said he was a philosopher, wasn't, because somebody who was one wouldn't make a claim about it -- that would be contrary to what a philosopher would do.

Only other people could say you were, or something like that.

Tyoesofcatalogue · 31/01/2021 15:19

Threads seem to be disappearing all over the place today. Dying to ask what happened on one but obviously can’t.

MoleSmokes · 01/02/2021 01:28

MaudTheInvincible - was it this interview?

NotTerfNorCis · 01/02/2021 06:22

The philosopher ones were mass reported. I got the impression they were taken down because of the way some people were using gendered pronouns.

DaisiesandButtercups · 01/02/2021 09:29

Read your link Molesmokes. Just left me speechless.

Best stay that way I suppose! I would love to hear everyone’s takes though if it were possible.

CaraDuneRedux · 01/02/2021 09:33

Hmm, the link with ex military again!

OP posts:
nauticant · 01/02/2021 09:41

I noticed that: an early interest in becoming a soldier.

DaisiesandButtercups · 01/02/2021 10:24

Yes I didn’t want to mention it but it stood out for me too, what is it with the armed forces?!

ChattyLion · 01/02/2021 10:37

Another one bites the dust for unknown reasons: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4152840-To-think-there-is-no-such-thing-as-a-trans-community

‘Message from MNHQ: Thanks for the reports. We're taking this one down whilst we have a look behind the scenes.’

(Reports of what wrongdoing? Behind the scenes at what wrongdoing?)

This was a thread raising some interesting important questions.. Sad

ArabellaScott · 01/02/2021 11:42

what is it with the armed forces?

Strongest bastion of extreme masculinity I can think of.

Anyone know if the talk guidelines have changed again? My perfectly innocuous comment got deleted on a thread about a rather good documentary. I've scoured the guidelines (again) but can't see why this would be the case. Is a word that sounds like "peek" no longer allowed to be juxtaposed with a word which also relates to a specific type of isomer? That's all I can think of. Confused

prisencolinensinainciusol2 · 01/02/2021 12:41

Am I too late to make a joke?

I feel I've gulagged behind somewhat...

StillAFeminist2 · 01/02/2021 12:47

NotFabulousDarling sadly it seems that useful phrase to describe what has happened to many of us is no longer allowed but I’ve never seen anything official

That one got banned quite a long time back. "Not in the spirit." Sigh. (Actually, come to think of it I think someone once got a deletion for that too, so I shall sigh under erasure).

@StillAFeminist2 Damn. I only learned about it as a concept here. Thought it was a really good term. I haven't had a PM so I wasn't sure. I was so proud my husband had gone to the Peak District yesterday and is now, several months after me, gently descending the mountain we had previously both been on.

NotFabulousDarling · 01/02/2021 12:59

@CaraDuneRedux thanks I was off the boards for a few months so I hadn't got the memo but last I heard was it was ok (this was my thread pre-NC as I don't want to namecheck myself; MIL got my username)

Yes, that's it Mole

It's really frustrating seeing threads with excellent, well-considered responses vanish into thin air.

If anyone is interested in an invite code for my other hangout spot Ovarit (the GC site by GC women for GC women) please just let me know.

I had a message in AIBU removed yesterday because that pair of words were "not especially conducive to civil debate." Well, if isomer means what I think it means in your post, I did.

In an interminably long and disputatious message on the same thread someone else used the same words as a phrase, so I have reported it asking for clarification.

Thought it was a really good term

I assume thats why it was banned - but I wish MN would be honest about it being a banned term rather than hide behind the ‘not in the spirit’ bans.
