Author Naomi Wolf condemns UK's 'moral panic' on trans issues

Britain is in the grip of a “moral panic” about transgender issues, according to U.S. author Naomi Wolf, who said she was angry that trans women were being linked with predatory men having been a victim of rape herself. ...

“It’s always this mythology of a man dressed as a woman in ladies bathroom who’s going to rape a woman - which just doesn’t happen,” Wolf told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a telephone interview, adding that women were far more at risk from men.

“Anyway there are already laws in place against you being molested by anyone in a bathroom.”

Wolf, 58, said every time she stood up for trans rights she was attacked online by “waves and waves of bots”.

And more like this at uk.reuters.com/article/britain-lgbt-history/interview-u-s-author-naomi-wolf-condemns-uks-moral-panic-on-trans-issues-idUSL8N2ID2IG

Just posting for information.

Not sure it is worth discussing, though needless to say she was an invited speaker at what should have been an event about Gay rights, but of course has been trans(formed) into a LGBTQ event.

Sigh.

*is interesting here to note that the rates of sexual assault committed by trans women has not been found to be any higher than of other women.**
Moreover, it has been found that trans women are more likely to be victims of sexual assault than other women

This document was part of the Equality Impact Assessment for the proposed changes to the GRA( Scotland) It relied heavily on what was found to be a cherry picked section of the Gottshalk Report , a report that actually concluded that including transwomen in female only spaces caused significant problems, and a report from a trans ally Peter Dunne who famously stated that women should feel no more discomfort sharing intimate spaces with a male bodied person than sharing with a woman who had a mastectomy. His report also relied heavily on a heavily contested report from one of the States in the US. As for the Swedish study ,again it relied on a post publication interview in which one of the authors stated that transwomen weren't more dangerous but this was in the context of them not being more dangerous than other men not women.
The Scottish Government presented no analysis of their own crime figures, ignored evidence readily available from other jurisdictions eg MOJ statistics. Therefore , there us absolutely no truth in your statement that transwomen are no more likely to be sex offenders than women. As for the likelihood of assault as no comparisons were properly done this is unlikely. Moreover,in the link from the US they are not even the most likely to be assaulted within the LGBTQ+ community of

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make begaydocrime. The two links I posted (sometime last year) were about:

  1. A sex offender who later decided he was a woman, and so was put in a women's prison.
  1. A violent offender who is male but identifies as a woman. Again, this individual has been put in a women's prison.

Do you have any comments about these two people? I don't understand why you quoted my post but then made a completely unrelated comment.

It is interesting here to note that the rates of sexual assault committed by trans women has not been found to be any higher than of other women.

Even before you assess the validity and the relevance of these results, the problem with any study like this is that you need to define your terms and explain who is included and who is excluded, and how that relates to proposed policies.

'Affirmation without acceptation' doesn't mix well with statistical analysis.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 27/02/2021 09:58

It is interesting here to note that the rates of sexual assault committed by trans women has not been found to be any higher than of other women.

Is that true? Quite apart from the offences committed by men, which are recorded as being enacted by women, it is estimated that the numbers of trans”women” imprisoned in the UK for sexual offences is between 41 and 48%. In the general male prison, 19% of men have been incarcerated for sexual offences.

334bu · 27/02/2021 10:45

Is that true

As you later state this is absolutely false. The idea that women and transwomen share the same patterns of criminality is a lie trans allies are desperate to spread , as it can be used to justify making female only spaces mixed sex.
Transwomen share male patterns of criminality.
There is absolutely no evidence that any subset of the male sex are less likely to be sexual predators because of their gender identity. These males of all gender identities commit 99.9% of all sex offences.

beautifulmonument · 27/02/2021 11:18

@stumbledin

In a way it is almost irrelevant who she is, what it relevant is that a supposedly respected group of Barristers have selected someone who thinks like this to be a speaker.

And she is happy as a supposed feminist (ie the women that men choose are rarely the women that women choose) to be used by the system to slag off other women.

We might say we know differently, but they are talking over us, and getting women to join in.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation was involved in advising groups globally how to stealthily pass legislation to advance trans rights

Interestingly since pinkie promise self-ID was introduced in Ireland, there is a very unique situation involving Irish women increase of at least 100% to 200% as the perpetrators of rape or threatening rape.

Mind you, wouldn't be surprised if there was a bigger increase in reality because of false flags now being put under women's statistics.

ChattyLion · 27/02/2021 14:03

No. I’ll always take safety, privacy and dignity via female-only spaces and promotion of female-only opportunities for all women (whatever it is they think about gender)..... over whatever #bekind, vacuous, man-pleasing, anti-democratic, anti-scientific, anti-safeguarding feminism-lite that the best-selling media-friendly ‘feminists’ Hmm are flogging us this week...

SunsetBeetch · 02/05/2021 14:19

Didn't know where else to put this, but it's more evidence of Naomi Wolf not being...the deepest thinker...?

"Dozens of mistakes identified in Naomi Wolf’s University of Oxford doctoral thesis raise challenging questions for British graduate education and its examinations process, according to a historian."

TheWatersofMarch · 02/05/2021 14:23

I don't think I've ever given two fs what Naomi Wolf thinks.

LazyHorizon · 02/05/2021 14:30

Naomi Wolf, whose Twitter feed is now 90% Covid conspiracy theories and anti-lockdown rants? That Naomi Wolf?

persistentwoman · 02/05/2021 14:35

Goodness SunsetBeetch
That's a pretty damning analysis. Not the deepest thinker indeed Grin

nauticant · 02/05/2021 14:46

Naomi Wolf, whose Twitter feed is now 90% Covid conspiracy theories and anti-lockdown rants? That Naomi Wolf?

It makes sense when you think about it. If in the real world your shortcomings get exposed and you're shown up to be at the very least a useless scholar, why not retreat into a domain where facts and reality don't matter? Where any criticism can be dismissed with "that's not my reality".

Mollyollydolly · 02/05/2021 14:47

I don't think anyone rational listens to her anymore. She's gone full on David Icke.

allmywhat · 02/05/2021 14:52

But I did read long enough to notice that not one person commented on the study you posted. Instead they pointed to posts on Mumsnet as evidence. I just can’t. 🙄

I'm sorry that you can't. I assume the thing you can't do is follow links, or is there some other limitation in play?

If you were capable, you'd have discovered that the posts on Mumsnet pointed to already contain extensive discussion of that study, there's really no need to copy and paste it all into this thread for the benefit of people who "can't."

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 02/05/2021 15:06

Ah Thomson Reuters - behind the Dentons document about introducing trans policies by stealth:

"The documentt_ is the work of Dentons, which says it is the world’s biggest law firm; the Thomson Reuters Foundation, an arm of the old media giant that appears dedicated to identity politics of various sorts; and the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Youth & Student Organisation (IGLYO)."

www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-document-that-reveals-the-remarkable-tactics-of-trans-lobbyists

They seem to be quite involved in legal affairs internationally:

"TrustLaw, the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global pro bono service, and Nextlaw Referral Network, the largest free legal referral network in the world, founded by Dentons and backed by a proprietary algorithm that helps find the best law firm for a client's particular needs, are announcing a new partnership to scale the practice of legal pro bono support for NGOs and social enterprises which are focused on creating social and environmental change."

TheWatersofMarch · 02/05/2021 15:22

@Conniethesensible "no man is abusing this...". Very dangerous thinking. You can argue that others overstate or overestimate the risk but not that there is zero risk. Because of the way gender/ sex observed at birth are being recorded in all aspects of social policy the hard actual truth becomes more elusive.

Defaultname · 02/05/2021 15:48

Is there any evidence for this:

"Her writing became so personal and subjective that her tutor advised against submitting her doctoral thesis." from Wikipedia?

nauticant · 05/06/2021 09:56

Twitter finally intervened to help Naomi Wolf in a way that her friends couldn't:

MrsBunHat · 05/06/2021 10:12

Just as an aside, I’m a bit sick of “moral” being used as shorthand for “uptight” and right wing. I suppose it comes from “moral majority” and the idea of religious morality but actually, even though I’m not conservative or Christian, moral panic is a pretty good description of how I feel about the trans ideology juggernaut. It IS immoral to subject minors to the trans pathway and agree to irreversible treatment they might change their mind about, it is immoral to take away women’s sex-based protections and put them in danger. And it’s happening in front of us and it’s terrifying.

Using ‘moral” as a sneery put-down is one of the ways woke people are led into okaying all sorts of dodgy practises because hey, we wouldn’t want to be moral Hmm

MrsBunHat · 05/06/2021 10:18

And ironically, woke witch-hunting, virtue-signalling and purity-spiralling is the epitome of the worst kind of judgemental “moralistic” behaviour.

RoyalCorgi · 05/06/2021 10:24

Using ‘moral” as a sneery put-down is one of the ways woke people are led into okaying all sorts of dodgy practises because hey, we wouldn’t want to be moral.

The phrase "moral panic" derives from a book by the late sociologist Stanley Cohen and has a specific meaning - people like Naomi Wolf and her batshit chums have co-opted it to demonise legitimate concerns about women's safety.
