Author Naomi Wolf condemns UK's 'moral panic' on trans issues

Britain is in the grip of a “moral panic” about transgender issues, according to U.S. author Naomi Wolf, who said she was angry that trans women were being linked with predatory men having been a victim of rape herself. ...

“It’s always this mythology of a man dressed as a woman in ladies bathroom who’s going to rape a woman - which just doesn’t happen,” Wolf told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a telephone interview, adding that women were far more at risk from men.

“Anyway there are already laws in place against you being molested by anyone in a bathroom.”

Wolf, 58, said every time she stood up for trans rights she was attacked online by “waves and waves of bots”.

And more like this at uk.reuters.com/article/britain-lgbt-history/interview-u-s-author-naomi-wolf-condemns-uks-moral-panic-on-trans-issues-idUSL8N2ID2IG

Just posting for information.

Not sure it is worth discussing, though needless to say she was an invited speaker at what should have been an event about Gay rights, but of course has been trans(formed) into a LGBTQ event.

Sigh.

I think the worst part of Naomi Wolf's tweet is that she doesn't understand that many of us would see time travel as a feature, not a bug.

ArcheryAnnie · 26/02/2021 14:58

I, for example, would like to time travel to when organisations like Stonewall stood up for gay men and lesbians, and when "woman" wasn't a dirty word.

PotholeParadies · 26/02/2021 15:10

Well, quite.

Screw getting the 'Oxford vaccine' or the 'Astra-Zeneca vaccine'. I want the time travel one!

Sign me up now please. I could go back to when the first few cases of covid manifested, so I could persuade them to self-isolate!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/02/2021 15:17

Yes. Useless, however, to think that anybody could have convinced our govt to take track and trace and closing the borders seriously back in Feb 2020. Tens of thousands of lives could have been saved if we'd just done what South Korea, New Zealand and Vietnam did.

Cailleach1 · 26/02/2021 17:12

I think the nanopatticles is meant to be nanoparticles.

You couldn't quite understand the correct gist because of the typo. It is a now perfectly credible, reasonable and rational statement.

You're not from North America by any chance Connie? The swearing being the first objection 'n' all.

And Irish women won't be conned by the dismantling of safeguarding of any 'sacred' castes of men ever again. Irish or otherwise. I think abuse was against the law in Ireland for quite a few years. And yet.... . Have you been following the scandalous handling of the history of brutalised women and children in the Mother and baby homes? The further insult to injury due to the investigation's handling by the modern and progressive male Taoisigh and Children's (sic) minister.

Galway West TD Catherine Connolly in her Dáil speech wasn't letting that bulls*t go. The gaslighting abuse of women by whitewashing the wrongs committed against us is still going on. You'll be telling us next that if someone is abused by a male who has signed his piece of paper and the state 'legally' recognises them as a woman, the abuse is not by a male. Or women removing themselves from the public square as their spaces are shared out to others.

We don't want any need created for more tribunals showing the Irish state's failure of women in 30 years time. And the po faced wokie men and handmaidens who won't be the ones picking up the pieces of their lives after the event.

Thanks for sharing, well said Naomi 😊

That tweet has now been deleted for violating twitter's rules. However, here's another one.

She's gone full on anti-vaxxer by the looks of it. Does that make her alt right now?

@skyliner001 you might want to rtft and be clear about what you're agreeing with.

I am now feeling very very old, because nobody has mentioned Ms Wolf’s position on Julian Assange or the infamous MN Webchat. I think you might enjoy it.

Which bit do you think was well said? 🤣 the patticles nonsense, the Belfast nonsense, the anti vaxx nonsense...? Deary me.

**You're mostly likely to get attacked by a man who knows you than you are a trans woman. I'd concentrate on getting irate about that first

Single sex spaces for women were established for privacy and dignity but also for safety from male violence when women were participating in public life.
Males commit 99.9% of all sexual offences and more than 85% of all crimes of violence. Transwomen are male and according to all evidence are just as likely to be a violent or sex offender as any other males. Therefore , making female single sex places mixed sex by admitting a subset of the sex responsible for almost all violent crimes etc ,presents a clear and present danger to women

Still, at least she's evidently not heard about all the experiments on the covid spike protein with nanobodies. Ever wondered why camelids look so damned superior?

How can she be so dense?? There are laws against speeding and driving recklessly. We still have people doing that regardless though. Just because thIt doesn't mean we should dispense with attempts to stop or lessen risky driving.

EarthSight · 26/02/2021 18:43

Posted before I finished - just because there are laws in place to discourage it doesn't mean we should dispense with attempts to stop or lessen risky driving. She should really know also how women are treated and scrutinised after sexual assault, enough to put women off from reporting it in the first place. What a fucking ridiculous remark from her.

MNers absolutely roasted her on the web chat 🤣 barracked her, even. I think we have to be a lot nicer these days.

Would love to hear that speech by an Irish TD. Would you know where I can find it please?
Alicethruthelookingglass · 26/02/2021 20:54

@NiceGerbil
*But people don't 'freak' if a person is in the queue minding their own business who is obviously a chap but also obviously quietly doing their thing etc.

IME 'old school' trans sexual types keep their heads down and a blind eye is turned. And TBH there weren't very many.*

I can give an illustration from my own hometown. I live in a US state that has gone genderwild. I used to ride the bus (for many years). There was a local woman who would ride on my route. She was unusually tall and after awhile I sussed that she was transexual. She was a lovely lady. He/she dressed in paisley hippie skirts and they were brave, I watched her defuse some crazy stuff on the bus that had nothing to do with her...She was kind and diplomatic and I liked her and had no problem when we met in the bathroom of the major grocery chain we both frequented.

Then a few years ago, we got the other one. The late 50's bulldog middle age man in shit makeup and fetish clothes who would stand in front of the sink doing their makeup for hours (listening) and watching every woman as they entered and left the stalls.

I didn't care if the first transwoman was in the b'room. No biggie. He/she just wanted to pee. And there was just one and the bar was set high. But now I can't report the voyeuristic creep and I find my self avoiding that bathroom in case I step in on him 'being a woman doing what women do' (whatever that means).

merrymouse · 26/02/2021 21:11

That anti vax tweet is downright stupid.

The article says there is no link to the vaccination. Of course if you vaccinate millions of elderly people it is sadly statistically likely that some of them will also die shortly after vaccination.

@Conniethesensible

Ok fine, lady has an rational opinion which reflects study carried out. link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13178-018-0335-z

We good here now? :)

I’ve read as many posts as I could get through before dying of boredom at the constant repetition with no effort to listen to anyone else. [Cue the standard response: But THEY don’t listen either! It’s all THEIR fault!”]. I get enough of that at home with my kids.

But I did read long enough to notice that not one person commented on the study you posted. Instead they pointed to posts on Mumsnet as evidence. I just can’t. 🙄

Winesalot, I didn’t see the youtube video you mention, but Eddie Izzard has been boasting of chasing some girls of about 13 who had the courage to challenge him when he was in the women’s toilets. He was so proud of scaring them off. I can’t look at him since I read that.

Cailleach1 · 26/02/2021 22:59

@XXSex . This is Catherine Connolly's speech. The visual quality not great, but you can hear her. The bit about the County Manager having the power to basically incarcerate women in the Magdalen Laundry if they had a second baby outside marriage. Maybe girls who were victims of abuse. No crime in law and these women were basically locked up and worked for free in the laundries. They lost their liberty on the whim of a male County manager as judge.

The Tuam mother and baby home where all the children's bodies were found (around 700) has still not been excavated. Catherine Corless speaking about this her discovery is sobering.

begaydocrime · 26/02/2021 23:18

[quote OldCrone]No man is abusing this, just like no one is abusing the self-ID laws in Ireland

So these are genuine transwomen then? In that case, we're not 'fearmongering' about transwomen, since some of them are violent sex offenders.

It is interesting here to note that the rates of sexual assault committed by trans women has not been found to be any higher than of other women.
Moreover, it has been found that trans women are more likely to be victims of sexual assault than other women

(yes, i am aware that the first link is scottish and the second is from the US - it is likely that the correlation is similar across the UK)

The so progressive chappie at 6.05 with the glasses and purple mask is the Minister for Children, Roderic O'Gorman. Couldn't be arsed to mark International Children's day but marked lives lost on Trans Remembrance day. I don't think there was a life lost in Ireland because of someone being Trans. Children on the other hand... .

Think of those nearly 800 dumped children's corpses in only one Irish Mother and Baby home. There were loads of homes and laundries.

He was the woke chappie who was happily being buddy buddy with Tatchell on a Pride parade in Dublin. Tatchell who asks very normal questions about minors having sex with adult men in such an interesting way. Irish Minister for Children said anybody having trouble with that is just homophobic. I wish he would state very very clearly that homosexuality is different from child sexual abuse and reiterate it is abuse. Being the minister for Children and all. Green party.

Just to show how well men signing that A4 bit of paper and swearing a pinkie promise they'll live completely just like a woman from now on is working.

Well, one person who signed and promised has just been sentenced to 6 years for raping and assaulting 'her' step son. Won't lose the 'now a woman' certificate. Apparently raping children is living just like a woman according to Irish law. This rapist is appealing the severity of that sentence and is being held in a women's prison. I'm sure those women love the extra edginess of being locked inside with a rapist in their midst.
