Jo Maugham (@JolyonMaugham) Tweeted:
"We waited some weeks for the BBC to be ready to cover our legal action to protect the legal rights of trans children. And the piece is up and is quite extraordinary. I'm not going to link to it because it is inaccurate and gives space to a transphobic hate group." twitter.com/JolyonMaugham/status/1330758709140729856?s=20

Which I assume refers to this piece:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55015959

And he says this about LGB Alliance, which feels stupidly for a lawyer libellous: The third point is they have quoted the so-called LGB Alliance - a dark money funded astro-turfed hate group - on the healthcare of trans teenagers. What next? Will the BBC be quoting white supremacists on whether sickle cell anaemia should be treated on the NHS?

I waited 2 years for speech therapy for DD and ended up going private as she was about to start school and she barely spoke and when she did no one could understand most of it. Including us.

I got an appt through about s year later. That turned out to be an assessment. Then if they agreed she needed therapy she would join the actual waiting list.

We were very lucky to be able to pay. I was really shocked that anyone who couldn't. Kids identified as needing help when little could be waiting until well into primary school. Affecting ability to communicate with teachers, make friends etc etc.

This was a few years back I doubt it's got better.

I don't understand why this one concern takes precedent over the host of other issues and illnesses that have massive waiting lists.

NiceGerbil · 23/11/2020 14:57

I was really shocked that children from families who couldn't pay would be waiting over 3 years. That's going to potentially have an impact on the entire rest of their lives.

That's just one example obviously.

Mental health services in general for children have massive waiting lists. You get issues like children going into residential help 100s miles from home. It's been in the news. And girls put in with boys etc.

There's been loads in the papers.

VulvaPerson · 23/11/2020 15:01

a dark money funded astro-turfed hate group

what a spectacularly stupid thing for a lawyer to say publically?!

Also the whinging because it was not all sunshine and rainbows and actually got some balance is..weird if any other subject, but par for the course with this one.

VulvaPerson · 23/11/2020 15:08

@TweeBree

"we believe the law shows they should be providing alternative care to anyone on the waiting list. That could include private and overseas healthcare."

They can't vote or drink or get a tattoo, and their brains haven't finished developing yet, let alone their bodies - but yes, let's send 14-year-olds abroad to have experimental, irreversible treatments. What could go wrong??

That is a bizarre and impossible ask, surely. For any medical issue?! That those on he waiting list are sent abroad for treatment instead?!

Waiting lists are shocking, and will be worse given how many things have been cancelled during this covid thing, but the pretense that its only trans related stuff is just stupid. Its across the board, and yes, it is bad, but I am not sure what can actually be done about it at this time? I waited nearly 3 years to see a pain specialist, when I have pain near 24 hours per day, sometimes bad enough to mean I cannot even get out of bed and need help just to go to the loo, a few times a month at present, I end up in A+E feeling like I am actually dying, and need jabbed with IV morphine, and they still don't know whats actually wrong, only that the pain is bad and often. While I am not saying my problem is worse than someone feeling 'in the wrong body', I fail to see why its acceptable for me to wait that long for something thats severely limiting my life, while others should apparently be sent abroad for quicker treatment, because their problems are more serious presumably? And fuck the suicide risk being brought up as an excuse for prioritising trans stuff. My illness absolutely made me suicidal, and still does even with painkillers..the only reason I am here is because I cannot bring myself to leave my kids. Suicide is absolutely not a tool to blackmail medics into doing what you want, nor is suicidal ideation limited to 'trans people' Hmm

NecessaryScene1 · 23/11/2020 15:20

I guess their view must be that the NHS is short of facilities, but has lots of excess money, and that it makes sense to use this supposed excess money to do short-term fixes like paying to sending people abroad rather than building up its own facilities.

Duckwit · 23/11/2020 15:26

There does seem to be an increasing desperation to stop the wheels coming off. David Paisley and his 'research' into the LGB Alliance, Jolyon and his claims (which as a PP said are fairly surprising for a lawyer to make), lots of links to Pink News everywhere claiming this and that. And now Owen Jones is supporting JM and wanging on about 'transphobic haters'.

nauticant · 23/11/2020 15:30

Regarding the astro-turfing comment, it seems that the basis is here:

twitter.com/DavidPaisley/status/1330487201084411908

I can see where that part of the comment is coming from.

Blocked Grin

Must be on a block chain list because I’ve never tweeted anything GC (or anything much at all).

You probably follow the wrong people.SOme people are added tyo terfblocker lists because they follow too many GC accounts. Something which is a bit weird, as its ended up with TRAs on there before, as people do not tend to follow only those they agree with, and infact for many, they might be more likely to follow those on 'the opposite side' so to speak!
SophocIestheFox · 23/11/2020 17:19

That sounds really tough, vulvaperson Flowers I’m sorry you’re being left to suffer

WouldBeGood · 23/11/2020 17:40

Why do these men feel the need to pontificate about this all the time?

Collidascope · 23/11/2020 17:44

Flowers vulvaperson
I hope it gets sorted out for you soon.

Quillink · 23/11/2020 17:46

WouldbeGood that's an excellent question. There are any number of issues affecting children that they could choose to champion. The epidemic of sexual assault in schools, for example.

VulvaPerson · 23/11/2020 17:46

Thanks. Been going on so long now that its just 'normal' for me now though tbh. It just really annoys me this 'transpeople have to wait 2 years! its discrimination!' nonsense, when its everywhere, even with condition that have a HUGELY detrimental affect on peoples lives. Its shit, I get that. But its not only that one group that its happening to. Infact, from what I have read, it almost seems like wait lists for trans related stuff are better than for other things.

CrazyToast · 23/11/2020 17:55

What happened to Joylon? A couple of years ago he donated £100 to the campaign run by Jennifer James to keep All-women shortlists female. Sure, he then withdrew it after the predictable reaction but I exchanged a few messages with him about the issue and he was cordial and receptive. Such a change.

He's a man who likes to be right regardless of whether he is right or not (see also Owen Jones). Right think on Twitter only goes in one direction due to the way it's run and who it's run by so in order to be the rightest of all right people Jolyon needed to atone then double down.

It's also a handy comeback from fox bashing on Boxing Day. You can't be cancelled for deeds if you think the right things.

The right thing in this case seem to be framing the sterilisation of children as a human rights issue but one in the opposite direction to which sterilisation of any group has so far been viewed in history.

We certainly live in interesting times.

Clymene · 23/11/2020 18:33

Yes I think it's a desperate 'look over there' to avoid discussing the Fox incident which makes him come across as a right wing vicious lunatic.

Perfect Darvo though - accusing GC groups of astroturfing when WPATH has very clear links with big pharma.

Wbeezer · 23/11/2020 18:35

I've said it on here (FWR) before re suicide but the only trans young person I've come across in person in our small town committed suicide shortly after starting uni, despite having a lot of support transitioning socially by family friends and school and uni.

ArabellaScott · 23/11/2020 18:37

It must be very difficult for parents to hear all the bullshit statistics pushed by the likes of Stonewall and not be terrified that your child is at risk of suicide. A horrible situation to be in. Let's very much hope for evidence-based care becoming the norm with the NHS.

GeorgiaMcGraw · 23/11/2020 18:38

@crazytoast To me, it smacks of a desperate parent trying to justify his choices....he's in deep now and won't allow any thought in his head that suggests he may have made a mistake, or that childhood transition is ever wrong.

HDDD · 23/11/2020 18:52

I reckon he's going to lose some support for going after the NHS (good)

In the middle of a global pandemic where even cancer patients are having their treatment delayed, no less.
GeorgiaMcGraw · 23/11/2020 19:10

@HDDD i agree. It is a mad argument to most people - taking a child abroad for gender reassignment surgery, it's like a bad joke from a Will & Grace episode, but without the humour, and with lifelong consequences for kids. Trying to make the nhs pay for some potentially dodgy surgery is going to be a red flag for people, including those uninitiated in The Debate.
