Thanks to recent contributors to the thread started over a year ago about a woman assaulted by a trans person allowed into a women's prison www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3733987-Judicial-review-for-woman-prisoner-alleging-sexual-assault-by-trans-rapist-in-prison there is news that the court case will start this week.

Fairplay for women have info about this on their twitter account pbs.twimg.com/media/ElKU7HjWMAAcN48?format=jpg&name=900x900

Also worth following a new group Keep Prisons Single Sex who are launching their web site soon twitter.com/NoXYinXXprisons

Good choice of music Smile

Who knew the W&E committee were so short of work?

stumbledin · 28/10/2020 14:41

Sorry have only had time to skim read this and FPFW twitter but somehow some Minister (who) submitted papers as relevant to the case but they weren't shown to the defence?

So is this just a ploy by the Government (department) to cover up or sidetrack (derail) the case?

Sorry just seen this on the Keep Prisons Single Sex twitter:

" ... The Secretary of State submitted documents concerning the legal decision making behind the policy on housing transgender prisoners. Some of it is privileged (can't be disclosed). This was submitted this morning 40 minutes before Court. ... "

(By the way you do not have to be on twitter to read tweets eg just put the relevant URL in your browser twitter.com/NoXYinXXprisons or twitter.com/fairplaywomen

Lord Blencathra is going to follow up. He asked questions earlier on behalf of campaign:

Lord Blencathra Chair, Delegated Powers and Regulatory Reform Committee, Chair, Delegated Powers and Regulatory Reform Committee

To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of compliance with the Equality Act 2010 of decisions to move male prisoners who are gender transitioning to female prison units.
(Citation: HL Deb, 27 October 2020, cW)

To ask Her Majesty's Government what criteria they use to assess decisions to move biologically male prisoners with a Gender Recognition Certificate into a female prison unit when the prison in question has a transgender unit.

I'm really confused.

stumbledin · 28/10/2020 15:04

I cant believe that having waited all this time for the case to come to court, that they couldn't sort out the paper work.

But we have seen this before, and whether deliberate or not seems sort of typical of a Government department to leave it to the last moment to submit evidence.

Suspect that it is just about women's rights so it wasn't high on their agenda of things to do.

Added to which the Court system has also been hit by cuts and a lot of case get postponed for clerical reasons, or not having translators available.

I'm sure I read on Twitter that they were going to organise a timetable by the end of today.

Thelnebriati · 28/10/2020 20:34

IDK where to post or if this should have its own thread but I've had a quick look at resources for women prisoners.

The Women's Budget Group have issued a report with a radical proposal that has Govt support. Normally I've be supportive of this kind of initiative, but the report often uses the word 'gender' where you'd expect them to use 'sex'.

''The Case for Sustainable Funding for Women’s Centres (as an alternative to incarceration for women.)''

I think it's the (formal) applications by journalists to see the bundle (The Times and the Spectator were in attendance, Janice and James, I assume), as they made an informal request in Court.

PearPickingPorky · 29/10/2020 06:07

I'm pleased that the MOJ have to pay the legal costs.

And that the defendant has to disclose the documents within a week.

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/10/2020 09:40

Thank you DerryWitch

DerryWitch · 29/10/2020 10:59

@PearPickingPorky I don't think it's the journalists, no. It seems to be some legal term for the claimant's side.
by 6 Nov - the defendant has to inform the court and the claimant whether there is anything else to be disclosed
by 20 Nov - the claimant will make any application arising from these disclosures
by 27 Nov - deadline for filing agreed directions (I'm guessing this means directions from the claimant's side to the barrister representing her case, i.e. any change in approach to the case arising from this new evidence)

Found this video from Parliament TV in 2015 of the Women and Equalities Committee session with Maria Miller as chair. parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/15db70eb-8e9a-4a29-82ee-78a13d802802
SO interesting to hear Susie Green and Dr Wren of GIDS speaking about the situation 5 years ago. SG pushing the narrative of children not being able to access blockers quickly enough and parents having to go abroad. Also bringing up the 48% suicide stat. Dr Wren speaking about how she is surprised that children aren’t coming forward at an earlier age. Discussing the ethics of consent. Bit of tension between SG and Dr Wren regarding the dissatisfaction with the ‘service’ being provided by the Tavistock. Dr Wren getting quite defensive regarding ‘capacity’ vs ‘protocol’ issues regarding their ability to treat the young people being referred to them. Mentions SG’s desire to ‘fast track’ children onto blockers/treatment.

Fascinating stuff and definitely worth a watch if you’ve got the time. I’m sure it’s been linked to before but I just came across it on a Twitter post by ‘WhatstheTrans’ which is advising the trans community on what this new enquiry is all about. Quite an informative thread. Apparently ‘WhattheTrans’’ know that there are at least ‘4 trans Allies’ on the current cross party committee.

FindTheTruth · 29/10/2020 16:23

thanks Achieve that makes things a lot clearer. With what Mermaids did at the last evidence session in 2015, I really hope The Detransition Advocacy Network submit evidence this time. Let the MPs see what's happened to girls since 2015.

FindTheTruth · 29/10/2020 16:27

I wonder if the Keira Bell case verdict will be released by the time the MPs evidence session is held....

AchieveBelieve · 29/10/2020 19:00

Oh God looking at that list it’s not looking good. Bell Ribeiro- Addy celebrated Trans day of visibility on their Twitter and calls for a more ‘inclusive Feminism’; Kim Johnson was ‘appalled’ at JKR’s ‘transphobic’ comments; Angela Crawley is completely gunning for Scotland to go full self-ID and legally recognise non-binary identities; Nicola Richards cites the lack of ‘negative consequences’ coming out of the reform of the GRA in Ireland (need to put her right on that one!) and our need to make things easier for our trans friends and family, and quotes a heap of statistics on suicide rates; Sara Britcliffe wants ‘the path to self-determination’ to be ‘easier’; Kate Osborne signed the letter that called Women’s Place UK, Transgender Trend and LGB Alliance a ‘hate group’. I can’t be bothered to research any further. I wanted to have some representation from a female MP who understands the issues and doesn’t automatically think opposition to the GRA means ‘hate’ or ‘transphobia’. So utterly depressing.

MichelleofzeResistance · 29/10/2020 19:02

Well if they come up with something biased there will be plenty of clear evidence to challenge it.

Professional integrity and standards about impartiality are very unfashionable at the moment, but are still written into standards.

MichelleofzeResistance · 29/10/2020 19:04

And this is what the consultation made them face and they're going to have to address this evidence too: women have a stake in this, women's rights are a thing, women are being very badly treated and disenfranchised in all this and they are going to have to face up to it.
