GC Christmas shopping

I know it’s not even November yet but I’m starting to write Christmas lists early thanks to anticipation of COVID-chaos. I would love to support as many brave feminists as possible with my purchasing power.

So far I have:
The Ickabog/ Strike books by J.K. Rowling
Difficult Women by Helen Lewis
Embroidery patches by Jess de Wahls

Any more suggestions for Christmas gifts that will support the fearless women (or men) who’ve stuck their heads above the parapet?

Any of the rather excellent books by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - buy her novels for anyone who likes fiction, or for someone who is willing to read an entertaining manifesto, get them this:

Great thread.

Any more suggestions, eg for older teen girls?

Also to say, a good business opportunity for anyone enterprising in that way, would be to set up a GC feminist gift shop website selling products from all these niche companies, organised by category eg all the badges, all the cards, all the stationery, all the clothes, all the kids' gifts etc. With products labelled with their supplier, with a link to a nice bio of each company/individual and their GC background and own websites.

Would just make it easier and quicker for those of us who'd like to buy such items without having to look at 20 different websites! Might also inspire others to fill the holes in the market.

Like, does anyone make GC socks??! :) Because if not, they should!

Hmm. Not GC socks but I just bought DH some cutesy I-Love-Daddy type socks for the littlest if my DC to give him, I ordered from Solesmith and the owner (Lauren) sent me a nice email thanking me for supporting her business. So not GC at all really, but I was definitely inspired by this thread to try to source bits and bobs from small/local/female businesses. I'm trying my best to shop small and local (and I've also done a massive Grace chocolates order Smile)

I struggle every year to know what to buy for my great uncle. Would be so grateful if anyone has any ideas. We don’t see him very often and I don’t know him very well but he’s lovely and always buys a little something for us so I’d like to get him a small gift, around £10/15 that he’d like. He’s in his seventies and likes reading, I usually get him vouchers for a book store but would like to change it up a bit if I can. He’s diabetic so not sure what chocs/biscuits etc he can have. Sorry, I know it’s not much to go on!

@Sunshineskies would he like the Strike books? You could buy him the first one and see what he thinks. My husband and I have wildly different literary tastes and we’ve both really enjoyed them.

Thanks everyone for all the ideas, please keep them coming.

I’ve just seen that Jess De Wahls has a big sale on her flower patches they are now £6 each. I’m going to buy a few for a teenage relative, I can imagine her putting them on her denim jacket.

Great thread. Any more small women-owned businesses or collectives would be fab.

I know a couple of GC soap makers but not sure how ‘out’ about their views they are - don’t want to expose them to bad reviews and boycotts by the woke.

@Thehollyandtheirony oh my gosh, I’m such an idiot. I meant to post that on another thread, had two open at the same time 🤦🏼‍♀️ Although I’m glad I did because the Strike books are a great shout for him! Thank you!

I'm making a note of many things from this thread. I must scroll up and find the link to the suffragette scarf for my mum, she'd love the subtle nature of it and order one for my own stocking

Thank you so much for starting this thread.

I will be making a concious effort to boycott Proctor and Gamble until an advert is released acknowledging their main audience rather than "people who bleed". They are not just Tampax, also:
Pampers,
Daz,
Olay,
Max Factor,
Herbal essences,
gillette,
Vicks,
old spice,
pantene.
A quick search engine check brings up an article with the complete list.

Hi everyone, my cartoon review of the year " 2020, The Year We Were All Cancelled!" is now available on Amazon, Book Depository, Booksellers.uk ( which I believe makes donations to indie bookshops) , Barnes and Noble, and Goodreads. It will gradually filter through to others like Waterstones, etc.
It's currently got more reviews than buyers, ha ha! Here's my favourite review so far, from Maria at Peak Trans. It's a lovely, thoughtful, and personal review:

@Thehollyandtheirony - I ordered some Christmas cards from //www.standingforwomen.com & came with free IloveJKRowling Stickers. They also do apparently socks with e.g. woman noun adult human female on them. ( and indeed man - noun - adult human male ) - so website might be worth a go.

Good find, thanks for sharing @BasiliskStare
I’m adding Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s wonderful books because she has defended JKR in a recent interview.

I enjoyed this article on China's matriarchal Mosuo tribe shared on a separate thread:

Ministry of Tartan do a scarf and a wrap in their own suffragette tartan. Already bought one for daughter and put it in Christmas stash. theministryoftartan.co.uk/product-category/suffragette_tartan_range/

Also face masks in suffragette colours from Redbubble for stockings. www.redbubble.com/shop/?query=suffragette%20mask&ref=search_box
