I know it’s not even November yet but I’m starting to write Christmas lists early thanks to anticipation of COVID-chaos. I would love to support as many brave feminists as possible with my purchasing power.

So far I have:
The Ickabog/ Strike books by J.K. Rowling
Difficult Women by Helen Lewis
Embroidery patches by Jess de Wahls

Any more suggestions for Christmas gifts that will support the fearless women (or men) who’ve stuck their heads above the parapet?

I was reminded of this charity by a poster on another thread: Women for Women. They don't appear to have been captured (fingers crossed) and have an excellent campaign running called #HopeInSisterhood. You can sponsor a sister for £22 www.womenforwomen.org.uk/sponsor-sister-hopeinsisterhood

They were set up after the Bosnian war to support women affected by conflict www.womenforwomen.org.uk/about-us/our-story

Galvantula · 27/10/2020 16:54

@HecatesCats I read about them on Gillian Anderson's Facebook page I think :)

I also recently came across
www.wellbeingofwomen.org.uk who seem to be all about women's health.

I just bought The Problem with Problems for DS. Hoping to replace The Big Bag of Worries which I didn't like much.

Some brilliant ideas, thanks everyone.

gardenbird48 · 30/10/2020 10:51

My Christmas list is sorted - undies for everyone - a company called Me Undies is on twitter having launched their Harry Potter themed range.

The rest of their products look jolly nice - I have always bought mine at Peacocks, good value and big enough but now they are closing down I will look to Me Undies to sort me out.

Apparently to some groups of people HP undies can be deadly but I'm prepared to take the risk (and the comments vouching for the safety of said undies are very heartening and numerous).

gardenbird48 · 30/10/2020 10:54

although.... they have now tweeted to say that they disagree with JKR and support the whole alphabet (except the letters W O M E N). Back to Peacocks to buy up their bankrupt stock, sorry everyone.

Three minutes of happiness, dashed!!!
gardenbird48 · 30/10/2020 11:05

I know, sorry Cats [blush)

on the plus side, they didn't say which statement from JKR they disagreed with - maybe she said she doesn't like hamsters and they are #1 fans or something?

The comments on twitter are still very good though - you might cheer yourself up with a quick visit?

I’m not sure if this has been said, but Father Ted or Black Books boxsets, courtesy of Graham Lineham

WhatTheFuckHappenedHere · 30/10/2020 11:28

@CodenameVillanelle

I've just looked through my Christmas present list and I've bought 5 jk Rowling books, the Harriet hall book, one Rachel Rooney and 2 feminist stationary products Grin

Also bought Robert Webb's autobiography which I loved and he has had some stick for being critical of gender, and his book has some great messages for young men in particular.

Robert Webb’s book is excellent

I love Father Ted so much. I’m really hoping to be able to buy tickets to the musical at some point in the future.

Couldn’t see this down already and I know it’s M&S but they have a Harry Potter clothing collection and it’s fab. Already got a dressing gown and hoodie.

StellaCartoonist · 30/10/2020 15:34

Hi all, I've just published my own political cartoon review of the year- it's GC and Free Speech throughout!
It's called " 2020, The Year We Were All Cancelled"! And there's one of my JKR cartoons on the front cover!

It's on pre-order on Amazon now, at:
www.amazon.co.uk/2020-Cancelled-Political-Cartoonist-Strangest/dp/1527271439?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
(Or you can just search Amazon books by the title)! Its release date is 5 November!
" The perfect Chrissie present for the Snowfllake in your life"!

It should be available through hundreds of other outlets in 3-4 weeks, including: Waterstones, Foyles, Blackwell, Book Depository. Some of them will sell it cheaper than Amazon!
If any of you get a copy, I do hope you will do me a review, I would love Mumsnetters to enjoy it!
Best wishes all!

Stella
"British Most Cancelled Political Cartoonist 2020"!

Agree they're good presents, but @glinner said somewhere (I think on MN) that he doesn't get royalties on Father Ted DVDs.

Glinner · 30/10/2020 16:02

Ak! No, I do! It's repeat fees that dwindled away to nowt long ago. my God, if DVDs came back into fashion I'd be sitting in the fabled catbird seat!

ParadeOfRemotes · 30/10/2020 16:04

I got Father Ted DVDs for Christmas one year as teenager (were my parents early rad fems?) In about the February I foolishly agreed to swap with a lad at school who'd got Fawlty Towers ones and he NEVER swapped back. Absolute fecker.

Thehollyandtheirony · 31/10/2020 13:16

Aww I wish we still had a DVD player! @ParadeOfRemotes Definitely a bad swap considering how few episodes of Fawlty Towers there were. How was that even a box set! Perhaps you should buy Father Ted again or stick it on your Christmas list?

If you can bear it, check out the ridiculous grovelling and capitulating from MeUndies here
It was definitely too good to be true @gardenbird48. Do they realise how ridiculous they sound, doing a Q&A with Twitter trolls? For the record, they have offended me with this stupid fucking statement. How dare they try to profit from JKR’s magnificent imagination whilst crapping on her reputation.

greyinganddecaying · 31/10/2020 16:49

There's also the IT crowd which is another Graham Lineham - I love this!

HecatesCats · 31/10/2020 22:43

We've been rewatching the IT Crowd. So funny. OP the Meundies debacle is both hilarious and deeply depressing, but I'm going with watching it through the ridiculous lense today. I mean wtaf?

JellyFishSquish · 31/10/2020 23:34

Last week we got the IT crowd complete series to counter C4 censorship. If it is just out there in the ether, it can be taken away. If it is in our hot little hands however, we are good. Staggering that this can be happening. Hope us buying the DVDs helps Glinner!

MaudTheInvincible · 31/10/2020 23:46

I find myself preferring print books over ebooks these days on the basis that they can't censor it that way. It seems ridiculous, but here we are.

I find it quite revolting that meundies are happy to make money from JKR's ideas, but are willing to go along with the utter bollocks. Have they never heard of integrity?

nevermorelenore · 01/11/2020 22:00

I usually buy my xmas cards from this charity, they are made by women in Bangladesh giving them a way of supporting themselves: www.sreepurvillage.org/

Sadly, it doesn't look like they are doing the cards this year. But they do a lot of small handmade products or you can do the donation type gifts.
