GC Christmas shopping

I know it’s not even November yet but I’m starting to write Christmas lists early thanks to anticipation of COVID-chaos. I would love to support as many brave feminists as possible with my purchasing power.

So far I have:
The Ickabog/ Strike books by J.K. Rowling
Difficult Women by Helen Lewis
Embroidery patches by Jess de Wahls

Any more suggestions for Christmas gifts that will support the fearless women (or men) who’ve stuck their heads above the parapet?

Thanks for the link Susan. I saw these on Twitter last night and didn't know how to link.

Yes both Rebel Girls and boys books have trans kids in them. I was APPALLED at this normalising of children abuse.

It really sticks out. It's a book celebrating the achievements of remarkable women and then there's a page about a child who has been transitioned which starts: 'Coy loved dresses, the colour pink, and shiny shoes'. Wtaf. It's so regressive.

That makes me really sad to read. And the fact that the child is apparently called 'Coy' is just really creepy?!

LOVE the women happy families game (we currently play with an animal-themed set and there are long debates about the hamster v guinea pig families which look too similar... Grin)

Off to buy a FWS pin badge too. Is there a secret signal for those who recognise it?

ParadeOfRemotes · 25/10/2020 16:23

Sorry - total lack of any formatting in my post!

EwwSprouts · 25/10/2020 16:27

Don't forget Helen Lewis' book Difficult Women. Great for older teens and those who've chosen history. I'm giving it to a couple of young women.

Birdy has been victim of a harassment campaign and she's a wonderful artist - donates money to nia and GC causes for her sales and does commissions if you're feeling particularly flush

[quote SusanSmithFWS]We have some badges if anyone wants a Scottish themed gift. Expensive times for us with the judicial review, so everything helps.

Love the badges Susan, definitely going on my Christmas list!

@greyinganddecaying

Vee accessories were at filia & their stuff (feminist jewellery) is fabulous

https://www.veeaccessories.com

This is a great site Greying. I love the pin brooches. So many to choose from. Thanks for sharing.
greyinganddecaying · 25/10/2020 19:57

I can really recommend vee accessories - they'll also do individual requests, I had a quote I loved & they put it onto a pendant for me

EwwSprouts · 25/10/2020 19:57

I haven't read all the names but I'm liking this as an idea. There's also a notebook. www.redbubble.com/i/throw-pillow/Feminist-Icons-by-candhdesigns/36502241.5X2YF

EwwSprouts · 25/10/2020 20:02

Yes. This I'm buying. www.redbubble.com/i/notebook/Too-Clumsy-by-kjanedesigns/24372039.WX3NH

fatblackcatspaw · 25/10/2020 20:49

What we need is a feminist chocolatier ... who posts choc

Seraphinite · 25/10/2020 21:03

Brilliant thread, thanks! Will be adding all these books to my own list Smile

Particularly love the FWS badges and as an expat Scot I’ll be buying one to wear over here.

Sad to hear about the Rebel books as I’ve bought two of them in the past as gifts.

RoyalCorgi · 26/10/2020 08:25

I'd like also to suggest Nina Power. I haven't read her second book Platforms, which you can buy here:

www.amazon.co.uk/Platforms-Nina-Power/dp/1916264026/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Nina+Power&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1603699281&sr=8-1

but her first book, One Dimensional Woman, is worth reading.

Nina has been hounded by the TRAs for a long time, had regular writing gigs cancelled and had one person set up a Twitter account purely to harass her.

Maybe not exactly what the op was asking about but I was just looking at the Acai website, it looks like a good brand - outdoor wear for women, specifically designed by someone who didn't want to 'shrink and pink'.

acaioutdoorwear.com/pages/our-story

IwishNothingButTheBestForYou2 · 26/10/2020 09:17

'shrink and pink'

Not heard that one before - just googled.

Ew.

One of the main reasons I come here is to learn about this sort of thing.

EyeRollForever · 26/10/2020 23:04

Redbubble has loads of chiffon scarves in suffragette colours. I've got the one that repeats Deeds not Words

Look for social enterprises that support women. Often run by and forth women

I'm thinking (google them all)

ReTweed
Grace Chocolates
Ms Miss Mrs (empowerment pants)

HecatesCats · 26/10/2020 23:32

Grace chocolates 👏🏻 thanks SciFi

ParadeOfRemotes · 27/10/2020 07:37

Just ordered the Halloween kit from Grace Chocolates and hoping it arrives in time. What an amazing idea.

I did Hotel Chocolat for everyone last year and frankly they were rank. This year its Grace Chocolates all the way.

SciFiScream · 27/10/2020 10:49

I'm doing a wee happy dance for Grace Chocolates.

Another place (bit off the wall for gifts) that is female led, a social enterprise and something a bit special is

Hey Girls (buy one, give one sanitary products)

She: A Celebration of Renegade Women www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1472249852/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_7laMFbB9FXQM7?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

This is a lovely book for teen girls and young feminists - my dad bought it for me because he's trying very hard and I was pleased to find Chimamanda Ngozie Adichi and JK Rowling in it - published in 2018 pre 'JK is a terf' but post 'CNA is a terf' so I googled and Harriet Hall has been harassed for terfery so supporting her would be 👍🏼

Galvantula · 27/10/2020 12:56

@Thehollyandtheirony I emailed Rachel Rooney recently and got a nice reply. 😊

I just bought 2 of her kids poetry books (My life as a Goldfish and A Kid in my Class) for my older 2 and "the problem with problems" for my smallest, who was very taken with the My body is Me book.

Ickabog already ordered and I have bought some kindle books from Lissa Evans and Gillian Philip so far...

Need to look at chocolate. :)

CodenameVillanelle · 27/10/2020 13:01

Ooh I just remembered Onjali Rauf who spoke at a WPUK meeting - she has two wonderful kids books published that cover themes around refugees and domestic abuse.

Thehollyandtheirony · 27/10/2020 13:03

Excellent find @CodenameVillanelle it looks great.

@Galvantula I think Rachel Rooney is ace, I might have to buy The Problem with Problems too.

Thanks for all the ideas.

I've just looked through my Christmas present list and I've bought 5 jk Rowling books, the Harriet hall book, one Rachel Rooney and 2 feminist stationary products Grin

Also bought Robert Webb's autobiography which I loved and he has had some stick for being critical of gender, and his book has some great messages for young men in particular.
