Brighton TRAs bullying female small business owner

Urgh. This is happening in my home town and it’s shit.

Happy Maki is a small, vegan cafe and takeaway. It’s a very ethical business. All about sustainability and green energy. They plant a tree and feed a child for each wrap made. It’s a gift economy and the food is free with a suggested donation. All very hippy. You get the idea.

A FTM trans person approached the female owner of Happy Maki and asked for support in fundraising for their top surgery. I believe they wanted a poster in the window asking for money. The owner refused. When pressed the owner said it was against her religious beliefs - she is a follower of the Divine Truth which admittedly sounds a bit ‘out there’ but not entirely unexpected given the nature of her business.

Anyway the TRAs have really gone to town and are posting in every Brighton based Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter accusing the owner of Transphobia and calling for her to apologise:

twitter.com/makiunhappy/status/1314261939833446400?s=21

They seem to be getting a lot of support and gaining a lot of traction too with many saying they are now going to boycott the business.

I’m upset about this for a lot of reasons. Obviously the female owner being bullied and harassed in this way and them encouraging people to email her. The lovely takeaway losing business. It’s also pretty tone deaf to attack the hospitality sector in the midst of a global pandemic for not supporting one individual’s elective, life changing surgery.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting here is in solidarity with the owner Anna. And if any of you lovely lot are nearby then consider getting a Happy Maki takeaway. The food is delicious and I’m sure they could do with some support right now.

"MuserOwl"

"Wow. This what used to happen to shop owners in northern ireland."

That is why the the UK Terrorism Act and 1968 Act apply in this case.

[quote Datun]And I'm sure everybody has seen the particular clip that I'm speaking of, from sky News, but just in case you haven't, here it is.

'Someday, when I'm awfully low
And the world is cold.
I will get a thrill just thinking of this -
And the way that Posie owned that little twat.'

TyroBurningDownTheCloset · 17/10/2020 17:37

Only another seventy more posts of it to go, EscapePlanning.

And then we get to start the deja vu all over again on another thread, no doubt.

EvenSupposing · 17/10/2020 17:38

@Escapeplanning

How did one poster manage to suck all this attention away from a woman onto themselves?

I think by now rolling in the mud with pigs comes to mind.

I'm a. Enjoying it and b. Seeing it as a spectator sport.

I don't know about you, but for me certainly, the highlight was Harrop saying, on national television, that women have appropriated the word woman.

It was a turning point for quite a few women.

Datun · 17/10/2020 17:45

Shall I tell you a TRA secret? Quite often we'll be talking to someone ambivalent over GC things who will say but it's just some women with reasonable concerns, it's not about transphobia. That's when we send them a link to this forum. And they come back and go oh fuck, I see what you mean, that's fucking batshit. So yes, the more lurkers and sunlight the better.

🤣🤣🤣

Of course. It's so clear, now. Mumsnet must be shut down, their advertisers targeted by transactivists because it's working for them.

PurpleHoodie · 17/10/2020 17:46

Datun

Did he actually say that in all his incorrect unprofessional ratings? Pobby stuff got on the way of hearing.

A good bit I grant you but my particular favourite is at the end when she says she knew that 'chaps like yourself' would campaign to have the board removed and you can see in his poppy little eyes the sudden knowledge that he's been set up! By a woman! Grin

Comedy gold that is.

EvenSupposing · 17/10/2020 17:48

Although tbh of late I've been watching the Butterworth Gasp n Shake a few times a day for fortification.

PurpleHoodie · 17/10/2020 17:49

I wish HappyMaki success.

I love how Posie repeated ''the dictionary definition of the word woman is offensive??'' Really hammered home to the casual observer how utterly pathetic the entire thing is, and her 'can you even hear yourself' tone was delicious Grin

Is it not correct that you are transphobic if you even say bi is a thing? It is a transphobic statement. It acknowledges that there are two sexes. The attraction is irrespective any alleged inclination towards an inner man or woman 'essence' as separate from your sex.

PurpleHoodie · 17/10/2020 17:53

Some numpty will say water is whateverphobic.

H=Humans
2= Binary
O= Oh

Indeed. Acknowledging attraction based on sex is transphobic. Someone who is bisexual could be attracted to the male sex exclusively, or the female sex exclusively. Or both.

Bit tricky bringing an accusation of biphobia, when it is impossible to be biphobic.

But then, it's not about facts, biphobia or otherwise, it's about intimidation.

I went to Happy Maki for lunch today with DH and the DC.

The food is properly delicious. I had the hoisin “duck” wrap and it was great, really lovely textures and very filling. DH is usually very sniffy about vegan food and he was raving about how great it was afterwards.

Dreeple · 17/10/2020 17:58

And don’t get me started on hydrogen pervoxide!

Did I spell that right?

Hopefully more and more women will be doing this. I certainly shall.

In my opinion, he just came across as a bit unhinged and creepy. Personally, I think the type of energy he gave off would make me wait for the next lift and exhale when the doors closed on the one he was in and he was taken away somewhere else.

I think also, for the unsuspecting viewer, you could see straight on the incredible reaction and contempt towards the word woman. To an ordinary viewer, such as myself, the notions and reactions come across as bat shit. You just thought "Enough now. Back in your box". Your 15 minutes feels way too long.

Of course, they were my personal reactions.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 17/10/2020 18:02

Deleted for telling the truth. Again. Not even for being rude Grin ridiculous!

Indeed. I haven't seen him on TV since. And maybe that's why. He couldn't think on his feet, and you're right, his private thoughts were written all over his face.

@jj1968 you quoted my comment then seemed to have forgotten to address it

PurpleHoodie · 17/10/2020 18:11

Sounds good Bearded

Escapeplanning · 17/10/2020 18:12

Well, as it is nearing the end a bit of recreational mud wrestling can't hurt.

My favorite post from early on was the one ending with "rancid twats."

So evocative.Grin

It's a double edged sword really. From the perspective of a trans person, people sharing transphobic conspiracy theories or accusing those supporting trans folk of terrorism is very worrying, as is Posie, Sonya and co whipping things up against us on the far/alt right. It is likely that things like this put us at increased risk, so I understand why people object.

From an utterly Machiavallian TRA standpoint the more extreme stuff is manna from heaven. It's exactly what we've been saying all along about elements of the GC movement, and it's there for everyone to see. And it has real results for us, note the recent defections and the moderates quietly backing away.
