Brighton TRAs bullying female small business owner

Urgh. This is happening in my home town and it’s shit.

Happy Maki is a small, vegan cafe and takeaway. It’s a very ethical business. All about sustainability and green energy. They plant a tree and feed a child for each wrap made. It’s a gift economy and the food is free with a suggested donation. All very hippy. You get the idea.

A FTM trans person approached the female owner of Happy Maki and asked for support in fundraising for their top surgery. I believe they wanted a poster in the window asking for money. The owner refused. When pressed the owner said it was against her religious beliefs - she is a follower of the Divine Truth which admittedly sounds a bit ‘out there’ but not entirely unexpected given the nature of her business.

Anyway the TRAs have really gone to town and are posting in every Brighton based Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter accusing the owner of Transphobia and calling for her to apologise:

twitter.com/makiunhappy/status/1314261939833446400?s=21

They seem to be getting a lot of support and gaining a lot of traction too with many saying they are now going to boycott the business.

I’m upset about this for a lot of reasons. Obviously the female owner being bullied and harassed in this way and them encouraging people to email her. The lovely takeaway losing business. It’s also pretty tone deaf to attack the hospitality sector in the midst of a global pandemic for not supporting one individual’s elective, life changing surgery.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting here is in solidarity with the owner Anna. And if any of you lovely lot are nearby then consider getting a Happy Maki takeaway. The food is delicious and I’m sure they could do with some support right now.

But jj1968 where have you seen anything that suggests "has been banging on about her new beliefs at work" though, I can't see anything to suggest that at all, please enlighten me

PotholeParadies · 17/10/2020 15:52

Eight months later, they decided to stick up for their friend, did they? Just as universities went back?

"According to Gov UK

Changes to legislation:

There are currently no known outstanding effects for the Theft Act 1968, Section 21.

21Blackmail.

(1)A person is guilty of blackmail if, with a view to gain for himself or another or with intent to cause loss to another, he makes any unwarranted demand with menaces; and for this purpose a demand with menaces is unwarranted unless the person making it does so in the belief—

(a)that he has reasonable grounds for making the demand; and

(b)that the use of the menaces is a proper means of reinforcing the demand.

(2)The nature of the act or omission demanded is immaterial, and it is also immaterial whether the menaces relate to action to be taken by the person making the demand.

(3)A person guilty of blackmail shall on conviction on indictment be liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years."

I've been a good MNer cooking dinner (chained to the kitchen sisters - yes, yes?) thinking that fourteen should be ForeTeen, or 14 ohh years in prison.

Anyway. An upcoming Brighton trip is in our family plans because UK women hold sway in families' food, holiday and financial decisions we need a bit of fresher air.

MichelleofzeResistance · 17/10/2020 15:57

it's a being kind thing, you lot probably wouldn't get it

You're right, how would we? We've got absolutely damn all experience of it being extended to women after all. I hear that phrase now and just mentally translate it to 'woman, do what you're told and serve me'.

With my mental answer every time, which is Fuck That, I'm not codependent.

DeliciouslyFemale · 17/10/2020 15:59

@Mandalalorianna

I'm not vegan, but I always make beeline for their little on William's Green at Glastonbury 😁
How very dare you! You identify as vegan, just so you can access our vegan food, then when you get what you want, you resort to your real meat eating self!! 😡

You’d never get anyone else pretending to be something they’re not, in order to gain access to places they don’t belong, in order to take and do things they’ve no right to!! Oh! Hang on a minute! 🤔 Never mind. Carry on.

Well she banged on about it in that letter and the claim is that she has been making similar comments about bisexual people in the workplace. I expect the reason it took a few months for staff to decide to walk out is because that's how long it took for them to get sick enough of it to give up their jobs, alongside the allegations about problems with furlough pay, holiday pay and contracts.

Yet again, you don't actually know and have no proof or evidence of what you are saying jj1968 you really do just make it up as you go along, don't you?

In the statement from the workers that is linked from the first post in this thread.
RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 17/10/2020 16:11

@Quaagars

Really, Rufus? All the personal attacks on here you just let slide and don't notice, but one retaliation from the poster with a numpty and you suddenly sit up? Really?
I know

It was childish of me

But to be fair i didn’t actually report it

I don’t report stuff on FWR, the regular posters get very pissed off with it

Datun · 17/10/2020 16:13

Ramming offensive beliefs down workers throats and then telling them to suck it up, leave or be fired when they complain.

No I don't have proof I'm merely speculating why they didn't resign in February. None of us have any proof of anything, we have some allegations from the workers, some of which don't seem to be disputed by the boss and some are. That's the only thing any of us know about this situation.

All appears to be on a par with a sexual predator intimidating women in a homeless shelter actually being a victim of women, sky News pursuing Posie across the interweb, women being 'monstrous' having boundaries, and what was it, oh yes, the definition of a woman is 'going around being a woman'.

I mean there's loads more, but I don't think I'll ever get over how much prejudice against women is involved in calling a nasty, sexual predator a victim, because he's been found out.

Still, the list is growing.

Which bit in particular?

And yet...

Ramming offensive beliefs down workers throats and then telling them to suck it up, leave or be fired when they complain.

and yet that hasn't stopped you from spouting all manner of unverifiable statements on what did happen, has it, when you are asked to prove your wild claims you come out with the above reverse ferret.

Well these things are not disputed by the business owner are they. What's disputed are the allegations over problems with furlough pay, holiday pay and contracts.

I don't know where you've got this bonkers obsession about Posie and Sky News from. I made a couple of comments pointing out youtube may have removed that two hour cranky video someone made because it was full of copyright violations. I never mentioned Posie.

Shall I tell you a TRA secret? Quite often we'll be talking to someone ambivalent over GC things who will say but it's just some women with reasonable concerns, it's not about transphobia. That's when we send them a link to this forum. And they come back and go oh fuck, I see what you mean, that's fucking batshit. So yes, the more lurkers and sunlight the better.
