Brighton TRAs bullying female small business owner

Urgh. This is happening in my home town and it’s shit.

Happy Maki is a small, vegan cafe and takeaway. It’s a very ethical business. All about sustainability and green energy. They plant a tree and feed a child for each wrap made. It’s a gift economy and the food is free with a suggested donation. All very hippy. You get the idea.

A FTM trans person approached the female owner of Happy Maki and asked for support in fundraising for their top surgery. I believe they wanted a poster in the window asking for money. The owner refused. When pressed the owner said it was against her religious beliefs - she is a follower of the Divine Truth which admittedly sounds a bit ‘out there’ but not entirely unexpected given the nature of her business.

Anyway the TRAs have really gone to town and are posting in every Brighton based Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter accusing the owner of Transphobia and calling for her to apologise:

twitter.com/makiunhappy/status/1314261939833446400?s=21

They seem to be getting a lot of support and gaining a lot of traction too with many saying they are now going to boycott the business.

I’m upset about this for a lot of reasons. Obviously the female owner being bullied and harassed in this way and them encouraging people to email her. The lovely takeaway losing business. It’s also pretty tone deaf to attack the hospitality sector in the midst of a global pandemic for not supporting one individual’s elective, life changing surgery.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting here is in solidarity with the owner Anna. And if any of you lovely lot are nearby then consider getting a Happy Maki takeaway. The food is delicious and I’m sure they could do with some support right now.

So because the owner doesn’t want to raise money this person get a new pair of boobs she is being boycotted ? Extortion.

A small business that helps children too. Shameful on the idiots going along with this. Would definitely be going there if I was in Brighton.

@HartnellAvenue

This. This right here is why MN is accused of being transphobic. You brush off her absolute batshit crazy cultish "religion" which was only started in 2007 by saying "it's a bit out there" and you think that her acting directly discriminating on the grounds of someone's gender identity is OK. Because its a transman who wanted to put the poster up in a cafe window in the most LGBTQ friendly city in Britain asking for support from random people for top surgery.

The cafe owner didn't say "no because I don't allow posters". Unbelievable the things some posters here will shrug off. Oh and when I was on twitter I would have been called a terf so I don't subscribe to the TWAW mantra and I do believe in sex based rights... but you and she are in the wrong here.

So it's compulsory for every business to support fundraisers for double mastectomy of perfectly good breast tissue? I think it's totally acceptable to refuse to support fundraising for non essential surgery. What next? Compulsory to support fundraisers for rhinoplasty? Botox? In what world does anyone have to support fundraising for any damn thing at all? It's outrageous to infer that refusing a fundraiser for a mastectomy is in itself transphobic.

I'd not sleep at night if I supported a fundraiser for that, and I may well soon be asked to by someone I love dearly. Someone I love dearly regardless of their name or presentation. But I love them too much to support mutilating surgery.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/10/2020 15:47

I have looked at her website, the food looks delicious . What an amazing cafe.

PurpleHoodie · 15/10/2020 15:47

Aka

Shut the fuck up women and do as you're told. Oh aye.

nauticant · 15/10/2020 15:48

She might be involved in a very peculiar religion but supporting someone having a double mastectomy of healthy breasts is way way out there for most rational people.

FairFriday · 15/10/2020 15:48

I believe she has the right to say no. I assume she was asked - in an amazed tone - why she said no. And like most people with a cause, she told them.

It’s the fact she said no - and is being ‘punished’ for it.

Had the boot been on the other foot... so

The person wanting surgery is the owner.
Someone rocks up and asks for a donation for (for example) a sports club that is single sex only (no exemptions).
Owner tells the club that they must accept players on the basis of gender and not sex.
Club says not that’s not right’
Owner declared that it is, it definitely it, it’s the truth.
Then the club members started a hate campaign - the police would be around pronto.

Cailleach1 · 15/10/2020 15:48

I think this is terrorising people and how grubby to use this to try and milk people for what I think as elective cosmetic surgery.

Mind you, reminds me I have to donate to charities which are doing excellent humane work. Making a real difference to peoples lives. Clean water, health, education, housing.

Except that she is not imposing her religion upon others.

Would you expect a Catholic shop-owner to fundraise for Marie Stopes? Why should they?

DulciUke · 15/10/2020 15:49

She's a small business owner and has a perfect right to decide what goes in her shop windows. If she said that she refused to serve a trans person then I could see the outrage. Personally I wouldn't put up a poster like that for any elective surgery. According to you, she should have no say about what is advertised in her own business.

picklemewalnuts · 15/10/2020 15:49

HartnellAvenue think long and hard before dismissing people who disagree with you on an issue as transphobic. I'm sick to the back teeth of being accused of bloody bigotry.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 15/10/2020 15:52

Ha, "we raised our concerns with facts and statements rather than emotion and anger"

She needs to "learn and understand" They don't want her cancelled apparently. Yeah right! Just quiet and on her knees grovelling (which won't ever be enough now) and giving them money to call off the hounds, which probably won't work but they'll have their capitulation and cash so won't give a fuck about her afterwards.

Just who the fucking fuckity fuck do these people think they are?! Angry

PurpleHoodie · 15/10/2020 15:53

Home. Grown. Terrorism.

This is not simply boycotting (acceptable: others can take up purchasing goods). This is beyond acceptable.

FairFriday · 15/10/2020 15:55

I wonder ‘how much’ is enough for these people?

yourhairiswinterfire · 15/10/2020 15:55

It's about time they started practicing what they preach with their 'just be kind' bullshit.

It's a poster, for fuck's sake. They're acting like a bunch of mollycoddled brats. It's embarrassing seeing adults behaving like 4 year olds who got told no. Utterly fucking pathetic.

Kit19 · 15/10/2020 15:57

Who the fuck do this person think they are?

How bloody dare they? This is why you can’t give TRA an inch

Why shipukd anyone, any buisiness support a private individual campaigning to have a mastectomy (I refuse to use the euphemism “top surgery”)

It is utterly appalling - threats, blackmail

That poor woman!

PurpleHoodie · 15/10/2020 15:58

Did any staff members involved take furlough money? AKA tax payers money?

Are they employed now? Will they be employed in 2021?

FairFriday · 15/10/2020 15:58

No, it’s not ‘be kind’ to women you silly sausage.
WhatWouldJKRDo · 15/10/2020 15:59

OK, her beliefs seem totally insane, but whatever works for her I guess.

But to whip up a hate campaign against her because she won't put a poster in her window? That's a crazy level of entitlement. Her religious beliefs are her own business. She's making maki rolls, not indoctrinating people.

FairFriday · 15/10/2020 16:00

Unlike some people...

It's ressentiment, isn't it? I'm in Liverpool City Region and we've had all manner of people (men, obviously, like the lovely Joe Anderson 🤢) in authority coming out to complain about the young people partying in the streets on Tuesday night. While I don't approve of that behaviour at all, Christ, give me young people having fun and being irresponsible over this joyless, sanctimonious cult any day, with their mission to go round "educating" all the people they deem to be wrong.

ThinEndOfTheWedge · 15/10/2020 16:04

She is not in the wrong.
It’s her cafe.
She can display - or not - any poster she damned well wishes.
This happens everywhere else - but oh surprise - not for the TRAs.

Utter unmitigated cobblers. No business is obligated to raise funds for surgery on anyone.

It's not transphobic to say no for any reason. The people trying to get this place shit down are absolutely vile human beings.

Cocothefirst · 15/10/2020 16:06

IMO no religion is as batshit as the cult of gender.
