This is a harrowing read.
I feel immensely sorry for the child that was. However I feel more frightened for the women and children G might be incarcerated with.

@Custardcream1244 thanks for that wording. Just checking though should we not be referring to sex instead of gender?

BatShite · 28/09/2020 22:35

I don’t think the legislation envisaged the ability of transgender people to be able to self-declare;

What the bloody hell did they think selfID was in that case?! This seems a weird 'we did;t know it meant that!!!'

and it didn’t foresee the problems it would cause if a transgender, self-declared person was held in a mixed prison

Because noone even slightly thought about the implications. As it would only be women who were affected, no biggie eh?

notyourhandmaid · 29/09/2020 00:02

The legislation was not 'self-ID', it was 'can we amend the law so that a tiny group of people, like Lydia Foy, who'd undergone full surgery and had been living as a woman for 20+ years and had their passport etc as 'female' can have their gender recognised in all legal documents, and also the EU have told us we have to'.

And then any safeguards - presented as difficulties for trans people, and therefore obstacles to be removed without thinking about anyone else - were torn away from it.

And then any safeguards - presented as difficulties for trans people, and therefore obstacles to be removed without thinking about anyone else - were torn away from it.

So, this was originally intended as a way to allow people like Lydia Foy, who simply wanted to live her life with dignity. Now we have a law that facilitates the life choices of anyone, for any reason, without any thoughts on the impact to wider society. It is very obvious, looking at the law that women and children weren't even considered. To make it worse, women aren't even protected under the equality law, just gender. So Barbie Kardashian, has exactly the same rights as I have , as a woman. It is very sickening. As an aside, I am listening to Ryan Turbidy on the radio and he it sounds as if he is all for "rebooting " our language to gender neutral. I didn't see the late late show last week but does anyone know if he quizzed Jedward on their book burning tweet. I would have expected him to but can't see it mentioned online.
Thelnebriati · 29/09/2020 12:52

I really hate being made to feel suspicious of change and forced to use 'thin end of the wedge' thinking; but I've never seen another movement like this.

CoolYourBeansMySon · 29/09/2020 13:03

Barbie Kardashian was due back in court today. Has anyone seen any updates?

SecondRow · 29/09/2020 13:06

Please tell us someone rang in to put Ryan right? This is the thing TheInebriati, I really don't want to be giving organisations like AIMS and Abortion Rights a hard time but if they genuinely don't see where erasing women is going Confused

Thelnebriati · 29/09/2020 13:09

I don't know if its that they can't see it or they support it. Having seen the changes that have gone on here, I'd say you cant let your guard down for a minute.

purplepizzabunny · 29/09/2020 13:27

All the coverage of the Jedward interview I've seen mentioned their mother's death so I think it was quite a softly softly "ah you're a lovely pair of lads" bolloXology.

Yes. It seemed like a PR love in for Jedward. I must check on rte player to see if Ryan brought it up. They had only tweeted about the book burning the week before, so I would be very annoyed if Ryan, who is always a big promoter of book reading, let them off on that one. This morning, when he was going through the newspapers at the start of the programme, he mentioned an airline that, instead of saying "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome on board" say "Humans, welcome on board". Ryan then briefly mentioned that we all need to get used to rebooting our language to gender neutral. (I did wonder why the airline couldn't simply say"We would like to welcome our passion board" but I presume that wouldn't have highlighted their wokeness credentials) I didn't listen to the rest of the programme but I doubt if RTE would mention if anyone had rang in.
Runnersos · 29/09/2020 14:04

*passengers not passion!!!
Autocorrect gone wild😂

Runnersos · 29/09/2020 14:59

I just watched the interview on player. As I suspected, not a mention of them joining in on the pile on for JKR. I always liked the way Ryan promoted book reading, I never would have thought he condoned book burning. Silence is compliance. 😠

I read one of the things they did. Oh my dear god. Pure barbaric, Just can’t be sane - just can’t be if what I read was true...why not a psych ward?

yolio · 29/09/2020 17:42

Totally agree.

I sent off my email to all female TDs today, short and sweet, but did mention safeguarding. I hope they realise that women like ourselves are concerned. And they should be also.

Great thread, and kudos to those who started it and contributed. We need to get tough now.

The tide seems to be turning a teeny bit. But I am very worried about the funding behind the Trans groups. Wonder why they do that?

ReiltinDubh · 29/09/2020 18:04

Oh my good god I can't believe they actually went ahead and put him in the women's prison. Outrageous

SecondRow · 29/09/2020 18:11

Comments turned off in that Journal article Angry

"Ryan then briefly mentioned that we all need to get used to rebooting our language to gender neutral."

It doesn't matter to an airline seat what biological sex someone is. It matters very much for medical care.

Runnersos · 29/09/2020 18:22

I'm not one bit surprised. I don't think they had any choice but to put a legal "woman" anywhere else other than a woman's prison. This is the problem when biology is considered irrelevant.

yolio · 29/09/2020 18:30

The prison authorities are on a hiding to nothing here. The law says this person with male genitals is a woman because of self ID.

There really should be a space now (albeit in a women's prison) where those who SID can be placed until things calm down.

But I bet the SJWs will be onto that straight away. It is unbelievable now.

But maybe some of the hardened lassies in Limerick Prison will be looked out for now as they should be, and will fight their corner, but they shouldn't have to anymore.

This is just so bizarre I have few more words now to express how I feel without losing my shit.

jaimebravo · 29/09/2020 18:37

This is absolutely ridiculous, Barbie is being held in Limerick women's prison. What can go wrongConfused. Barbie has form for attacking a Social Worker. I hope the Prison officers have good support.

It’s a great day for trans rights and the Self ID model in Ireland 👏

This law needs to be reviewed, immediately.

NiceGerbil · 29/09/2020 19:27

'It doesn't matter to an airline seat what biological sex someone is'

It does to some very religious Jewish men who keep asking for women to be moved away from them on flights, and the air stewards telling women to move even though it's against their own policies.

I suspect identifying as a man would not result in those men saying ok that's fine then.

Just as an aside.

I think this needs to be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Is there any way we can organise a march without being infiltrated by the far right? Or a vigil in Limerick for the women in that prison? Although as I live in a lockdown area at the moment I wouldn't be able to go to Limerick.

Should we contact each other off line to chat and see where we go?

GrainneMhaol · 29/09/2020 19:59

I think pickets on TD's constituecy offices? At least those who voted for the GRA and those who act now to do something to ammend the GRA
